Dinner on the Bridge of Dreams
Date: Jun 23, 2011
Entry: The river made its presence known as it surged underneath the guests weaving their way through the simplistically elegant tables. A river underneath tables...how could that be? The occasion was a fundraising dinner held by the Vermilion Trails Society (VTS) just three days shy of Summer Solstice. The venue was the one year old Bridge of Dreams built by the same structural engineering firm (StructureCraft) that designed and built the Richmond Oval for the 2010 Olympics. Its job was to re-join the Kettle Valley Rail Trail together again after years without anything except the concrete pillars of what once was. The steel train bridge was gone, but in its place now stands a masterpiece.
Guests eased onto the Bridge of Dreams dressed to the nines. Tantalizing smells wafted through the air from the lamb that was slowly cooked over a rotisserie bbq by Charles Weber. This was an occasion to remember. For many, a dinner on the pedestrian bridge that stretched 215’ across an expanse of the Tulameen River was an experience they had been anticipating for weeks.
This dinner in this place has been a dream that people in the community of Princeton would not let go of. Last weekend it happened. The Vermilion Trails Society hosted a successful fundraising dinner that raised money for the park just below and a public art piece. Dream big Princeton.

Made with love
Date: Dec 6, 2010
Entry: An idea to help students think about their global community turned into a piece of art under the watchful eye of Grade 4 teacher Raelene Campana and a group of willing volunteers. Campana wanted her students to have empathy for those around them, so she decided to get her students building a quilt. One thing led to another and before long Campana was on the search for some quilting expertise, some volunteers, a theme and an infusion of cash to get her project up and running. This was the beginning of the quilt titled "We're all the same under one star." The students designed and created their own art on blocks of fabric. Then, the blocks were sewn into a star pattern. The whole project was exciting for everyone involved. Tickets will be sold on the quilt with all proceeds going to "Doctors without Borders."

Lighting the way
Date: Nov 30, 2010
Entry: It has been a dream of many in our community to see our trail through town lit up. The trail is part of the Kettle Valley Rail Trail and also part of the bigger trail, the Trans Canada Trail. Since winning the $100,000 top prize from ActNow BC, Princeton has been able to fulfill that dream. Funding from the GamesTown win, as well as, funding from other grants approved for the Vermilion Trails Society have been brought together to light the trail from one end of town almost to the other. It has been a real community effort, with the Town of Princeton and VTS working together to make great things happen. Soon residents and visitors will have somewhere to walk whether it is dark out or light out that is safe. They can take their dog or themselves out for a walk when it is still dark in the morning or after they get home from work no matter what time of year it is. The lighting will get more people active after dinner and when the winter blahs set in.

200 and more
Date: Sep 16, 2010
Entry: Like a tree, a community grows roots. Every task or project they accomplish together spreads those roots deeper until a town becomes much more in its unity. Thanks to the Princeton Arts Council and a 2010 Legacies Now grant, artists in our community were able to depict the significance in a community mural that was made for the people by the people. Over 200 residents glazed clay baked leaves indigeneous to our area for a mural designed by local artist Robin Lowe with the help of many other talented artists. The Princeton Potter's Guild held workshops and invited community members to come and do a leaf. The mural was completed in glass and tile to form a beautiful tree which now hangs proudly outside our community center for all to see. It was unveiled at Princeton's 150 birthday celebration on Labour Day weekend.

The Barnyard
Date: Sep 15, 2010
Entry: After winning the gold medal for GamesTown 2010, Princeton had a big decision to make. What were we going to do with all the money? After forming a GamesTown Committee, four projects were identified and earmarked to receive the $100,000. The first project is complete thanks greatly to more community spirit. Donations of heavy equipment, hard labour and good old B.C. dirt turned $20,000 into an incredible Bike Park that has been busy ever since. Two weekends of fantastic community spirit and voila a Bike Park. The Barnyard has been a source of great fun for the kids and even made CHBC news.

I can't believe we are here!
Date: Mar 12, 2010
Entry: "I can't believe I am at the Olympics." These were the words spoken by my daughter Shelby as we sat at the top of the bleachers at Cypress directly in front of the aerial jumps. The seats were great and courtesy of Princeton winning the title of Gamestown. I was honoured to be one of the recipients of a pair of tickets and thoroughly took advantage of the gift to enjoy. My daughter and I watched all three Canadian men qualify for the finals. It was thrilling to hear the crowds cheer for their own and thrilling to feel the Olympic joy. After the freestyle aerials, we went downtown and caught up with my brother and son who spent the day travelling through the downtown Olympic venues. The experience is definitely one I will be crossing off my bucket list. Thank-you Gamestown 2010!

Princeton honoured with Inuit ladies
Date: Feb 17, 2010
Entry: A few days before the Olympic Torch Relay local Inuit transplant, Bernice Kunderman had two of her talented friends arrive to help her showcase their culture to the people of Princeton. Kunderman and her friends, Karen and Leslie, have performed for the then, Prime Minister of Canada Jean Cretien and Governor General Adrianne Clarkson as well as movie star Ralph Fiennes. They knew what they were doing and agreed to give free demonstations of their Inuit sports and throat singing to all three Princeton schools. It was an honour and a privelege to have them in our town and they went out of their way to let everyone give their culture a try. One of the women who performed with them in the past - Mariah was unable to come because she was performing at the Opening Ceremonies at the Olympics and Princeton has no doubt that thesee three could have been there too - they were awesome and we were truly privileged.

When the torch came to town!
Date: Feb 17, 2010
Entry: When the Olympic torch came through Princeton, over 1500 townspeople and visitors came out at 7ish in the morning for the 8 a.m. Sunday morning jaunt through town. The actual time of the relay was under 10 minutes, but that did not deter anyone from getting up. There are under 3000 in the town -not bad for Sunday sleep-in day.

Crazy Lady Steals Olympic Torch
Date: Feb 17, 2010
Entry: Princeton is a community full of people who like to have fun. These ladies are some of our own. Proud to be Canadian and proud to be from Princeton was the inspiration for their silliness on the morning of the Olympic Torch Relay when it passed through town. Even though our little town did not get the media exposure the larger centers got, we showed up in our Canadian clothing to support our country, our athletes, and our town...oh and to have some fun doing it. Go crazy ladies!

A warm welcome
Date: Feb 5, 2010
Entry: When I first moved here in 2000 I was welcomed by many people as well as a Welcome Wagon Representative.
Shortly after I met and married my husband and we started a family. We are so grateful to be raising our family in such a great community. There are so many more freedoms here than in the city.
So, as the kids grew and became more involved, so did I. I looked at what I wanted to do in Princeton and discovered the WW rep had moved on to something else. What a great way to give back! It has been a exciting year for me meeting and greeting the new comers and before long I needed an assistant.
So, if you are planning to move to Princeton and I hope you do, Claire and I, Renee, have a warm welcome for waiting you.

Happy in Princeton!
Date: Jan 28, 2010
Entry: I am proud to be living in Princeton! I feel very lucky to be able to enjoy all the great things Princeton has to offer. There is biking, hiking, running on tons of beautiful trails, there are so many lakes to camp at, you could not camp at the same one if you went each and every weekend throug out the summer, not to mention that they all have excellent fishing. We have a beautiful town, beautiful scenary, and we, as a community, take care of each other. Being that I have never wanted to live in a large city, I have to wonder if the people living in bigger centers have any clue as to how spoiled we are to get to live here!

An artistic birthday present
Date: Jan 27, 2010
Entry: The Princeton Arts Council was awarded a 2010 Legacies Now grant for $8000 to create a Community Mosaic Mural to be installed at the Riverside Community Center. The project is the brainchild of the Princeton Potter's Guild and will be created and assembled under the leadership of Robin Lowe, a local glass and mosaic artist.
