The Olympic Flame
Date: Dec 10, 2009
Entry: When the Olympic Flame came to Victoria, Mrs. Barkley's Grade 7 French Immersion class made a list of all that they knew about the flame. Next they wrote out questions about the flame which guided their research. Each student visited different websites, expecially www.vancouver2010.com to answer their questions. They wrote their findings at the computer in Microsoft Word in the form of a short report with images they cut and pasted from the web. Because they are a French Immersion class, all this work was done in French. The Canadian website was bilingual which proved a perfect resource for the students.

LFMSS Olympic Titans
Date: Oct 30, 2009
Entry: LFMSS teachers and students are getting into the Olympic spirit in a number of ways.
-----In grade 7, we will be starting our Olympic Unit by studying the ancient Greek olympics. This unit consists of a mapping exercise, defining of olympic terms, exploring the role and importance of the ancient olympic games, comparing the olympic games of 776 BC and 2010 AD, designing a cartoon based on the events, and an art related project where they can choose one of four items: a newspaper article, an olympic program, an olympic event, or a television commercial.
The second part of the unit deals with adopting an olympic country and completing two areas. The first one deals with a research project making cultural comparisons in terms of language, dress, food, housing, media, recreation and entertainment, political system, educational system, money, industry, modes of transportation, and work. As well as a geographical analysis of the country. The second area requires the student to compile a scrapbook of that country's accomplishments throughout the olympic games.
The third part of the unit requires the students to do reading response journals to articles in media dealing with such issues as trademark infringements, olympic uniforms, security, transportation....
Lastly, the students are asked to complete 1) a series of artwork projects such as designing their own set of stamps and coins, olympic logos, postcards 2) play the role of newspaper reporter and create a newstory based on an actual sporting event 3) examine newspaper articles to discern fact vs: opinion 4) pretend to be a member of the IOC and come up with pausible solutions to hypothetical situations 5) identify pictures which convey a checklist of emotions and finally 6) complete a media scavenger hunt
-----Grade 9 art classes are designing cards that will be sent to Olympic athletes and dignitaries.
-----Recently, we held a series of intramural games for middle school students. Each team was named after one of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic mascots.
-----Leading up to and during the Olympics, we plan to participate in 'Paint the Town Red' and encourage students and staff to wear red on Fridays and all through the Olympics and Paralympics.
-----We are working on increasing our television feeds throughout the school in order to broadcast the games in the morning and during lunch, with the aim being to have a video projector in one of our gymnasiums showing the games.
-----Games are being planned to get students and teachers involved in physical activities during lunchtime, such as outdoor hockey and shootouts to raise money for a worthwhile cause.
-----We are coordinating with our school's Leadership program (a class of around 20 students) to build interest and excitement about the 2010 Olympics in our school.
-----Finally, a student at our school was selected to be an Olympic torchbearer! Matthew Gray will be running a section of the torch parade, and we hope to follow this event at our school.

Stafford House Teams to Capture Olympic Spirit
Date: Oct 26, 2009
Entry: H.D. Stafford Middle School will be capturing the Olympic Spirit using our new House Team model. This year, Stafford has divided all of their staff and students onto four unique House Teams - Earth, Fire, Water and Wind. Throughout the year, our House teams take part in various spirit and school wide activities to raise school spirit and community. With the Olympics just around the corner, we have designed an exciting House team event for January and February. On Friday January 29th, each of the four House teams will be involved in creating an in-school Olympic style event, Olympic House team banners and an Olympic cheer related to each House team. Then, on Friday February 26th, during the Olympics, all of our students will get to try out each of the four Olympic events while competing to earn House points for their team. We will then finish the day with an Olympic style "closing ceremonies" in our gym where students will engage in Olympic cheer competitions and hopefully conclude the day by watching a real-time Olympic event. This will be the culmination of a number of Olympic activities our students and staff will be pursuing both in the classroom and school-wide between now and the Olympics.

The Business Education students have been "Sharing the Dream" by promoting and creating Olympic ads, creating an Olympic wall, studying the history and values of the games, creating storyboards on Olympic athletes, debating social issues surrounding the games, planning excursions for Olympic visitors to discover beautiful BC, while working on the Canadian Olympic/Paralympic programs. The Karen People introduce CANE BALL to Langley
Date: Sep 3, 2009
Entry: The Karen People of Langley were very happy to introduce CANE BALL, a sport they played in their country of Kaw Thoo Lie (Karen State) Burma and in the refugee camps in Thailand. The entire International Festival 2009 was a fun day -- but the highlight was the CANE BALL tournament!
This sport is sometimes known as Sepak Takraw. CANE BALL is played as a competition - on a court with the dimensions similar to those of a badminton court and the rules and points given the same as volley ball. It combines elements of soccer, volleyball, and gymnastics.
Since the sport was introduced at the tournament there is now interest in offering CANE BALL as a sport through City Parks & Rec and also to start a league in the Lower Mainland.
Enjoy the video memories of this fantastic day!

City of Arts
Date: Aug 28, 2009
Entry: When my father and I finally decided on the best place to start a native gallery, Langley appeared at the top of the list. After talking with local residents and businesses, we were determined to have a great location on the Downtown strip, and found that perfect place. Now, nearly four years later, Tribal Spirit Gallery maintains that prime spot in what we call The City of Arts.
Here in downtown Langley you can spend the day strolling through a variety of niche shops and art galleries, then stop for an ice cream, coffee, a family lunch, or a romantic evening at a fine restaurant. Plan for one of downtown Langley's annual events, Arts Alive, the Cruise-In, or take in some of the many other free events including native dancers, musicians and bands, local wine tasting and festivals.
A lot of work goes in to making downtown Langley so alive, and most of that credit goes to the inexhaustible Downtown Langley Merchants Association, as well as the many volunteers who lead local walking tours and exist as the city's ambassadors.
All of this is encircled by many large sports facilities, gymnasiums, athletic fields and swimming pools providing Langley with a host of world class athletes and teams, and the Thunderbird Show Park which draws equestrians from around the world. Now consider the vast expanse of lush, rolling hills and countryside which motivates our cyclists, and no other place in B.C. can match the possibilities available here.
