Go Dawson
Date: Jan 8, 2010
Entry: I have spent 30 years of my life moving around Canada, never spending more than a few years in one place (living in 9 different communities) until we moved to Dawson Creek. When we first arrived in Dawson Creek my husband said don't unpack we are not staying long. Well it has been 16 years and yes I did unpack. Dawson Creek has become our home. The sense of community here has been amazing. We now have two teenagers who are very involved in dance, hockey, soccer, school sports, the ski hill, pool, and the outdoors. I have to say Dawson Creek is a wonderful place to raise our family and we are proud to call our home.

Walking with Grandma
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: One of the great things about Dawson Creek is that no matter your age, you can spend time together outside. While my boys love outdoor activities like cross-country and downhill skiing, cross-country running, track & field and biking, which are usually done with others their age or coaches, they also like to walk with their grandma along the many walking paths here. The three of them talk and joke and have a good time together without worrying about traffic and can just enjoy each other and the scenery around them.

Punching and kicking our way to health!
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: Dawson Creek is home to the Chujitsu Kyokushin Karate Dojo where approximately 100 people between the ages of 7 and 50+ train in Kyokushin karate. We not only have students who have started as children or young buff guys but also a lot of their moms! We encourage anyone who is interested in the martial arts to give it a try - you never know what you can do until you try we say!
Karate is an excellent form of exercise for anyone no matter age or skill level. Our dojo teaches the kyokushin style of karate originated by Masutatsu Oyama. As a traditional Japanese martial art, Kyokushin emphasizes not only physical growth but also the mental and spiritual aspects of our lives (including a bit of Japanese!).
Chujitsu means faithful, hardworking and diligent. Our dojo works hard to teach this to our students and shows it through the dedicated black belts who teach on a volunteer basis twice a week all school year. We are a community of people who are dedicated to becoming better individuals and improving our health and strength while maintaining a safe, friendly and family-oriented atmosphere.

Paradise Valley Snowmobile Association
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: The Paradise Valley Snowmobile Association is celebrating its 40th birthday here in Dawson Creek. The club has close to 200 km of registered trails and over 200 km more unregistered trails. Recently the club installed two new warm-up cabins in addition to the four existing cabins. These are placed throughout the trail system. These trails also join the communities of Dawson Creek & Tumbler Ridge together. On Jan16/2010 we are hosting a drag race event that is expected to draw as many as 80 racers from as far away as southern BC & central Alberta. In the past these races have also drawn crowds of spectators encroaching the 200 numbers. Still scheduled later this winter are a poker ride and an outdoor BBQ.
The most amazing part is that all of this has been accomplished entirely by volunteers.

Dawson Creek is Gamestown 2010
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: There are so many reasons that Dawson Creek should be considered for Gamestown 2010.
Besides the beautiful landscape and the wonderful people to enjoy in our area, our community has many sports groups to keep everyone active as well. My family over the years has taken part in many extra curricular activities like camping, hiking, skiing, biking, soccer, futsal, baseball, badminton, hockey, curling, karate, dance, golf, basketball, volleyball, and many other activities in Dawson Creek.
Our community recognizes the value that recreational activities add to our city. So many people give of their time to make sure everyone can enjoy them. There are many sports groups that could benefit from winning the Gamestown 2010 grand prize. Our mixed slopitch league has grown in the past couple of years from 8 teams to almost 40 teams, Our soccer leagues have grown to over 1100 children and over 300 adults. Our Nordic Ski club is thriving and the indoor sports like basketball, volleyball and badminton are filled to capacity. We should qualify to be Hockeyville for the huge participation in hockey in Dawson Creek and the speed skaters and figure skaters numbers are huge. We have a aquatic centre that is bursting at the seams with programs for young and old and the inside walking track is always busy during the cold winter months. Our golf courses are always busy and the local gyms are full of people keeping fit!
There are many sports groups that I could talk about, but I would like to briefly tell you about one of many great stories that can be told about our community.
The Bear Mountain ski hill in Dawson Creek has been a huge part of our community. Children and people of all ages have been able to enjoy our little ski hill for 50 years. Whether you came up to the hill to participate in our Nancy Green program, or just for some fresh air and friendly atmosphere, people have expected that the hill would always be there to enjoy. This ski hill has been able to stay open this long with the hard work of many individuals volunteering thousands of hours and the financial support of many local businesses throughout the community. Without the many volunteers and businesses that gave their time, expertise, services, and donations of all kinds we might not be able to keep this hill open year after year. Many aging pieces of equipment including our snow cat and T-bar lift needed to be repaired in order to get the hill back into operation and the community has stepped up to keep us going. The ski hill received so much love and support from the community that it has been able to get open in time for our Christmas break this year, and will continue to remain open this year and hopefully many years to come
It would be fantastic if you considered Dawson Creek as the winner of Gamestown 2010. It would be an honor to win this prestigious award and our community would appreciate it and put the prize money to good use!

GamesTown 2010
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: I work for the City of Dawson Creek and my job over the past few days has been to get out into the community and spread the word to to people to submit stories to this site in our quest to become GamesTown 2010. I have spent a lot of time the past couple of weeks reading the stories on here and I have to say....good work Dawson Creek. The response has been amazing, the stories are heart warming. It is hard to explain the pride you feel in your home town when you read how possitive people are and how much they love it here. We are Northern BC, people always ask "why are you there?". When it is -40 and dark you ask yourself the same thing....but it's the people. It's the warmth of community and just knowing that we are happy here in our small town and when we put our minds to it we do get the job done!!! I'm very proud of the schools, businesses and people who have stepped up and written their stories. They are a true reflection of how special it is up here. We are GamesTown 2010 and even if we don't win the gold other people can read what we are all about.

Leoppky Park
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: Leoppky Park is located near our house and we enjoy visiting it all year long. It is a unique park in that it is a series of trails that winds through forests. Our dog loves to go running through the trails and meet "friends" who are also enjoying the park. In the winter months, my husband is an active snowshoer and breaks trail for us after a snowfall. There are information plaques located throughout the park describing the different types of trees in the park. We also used this park as a setting for our wedding photos last summer.
