White Rock's Social Justice Film Festival - Together we will create a better world.
Date: Jan 5, 2010
Entry: The White Rock Social Justice Film Festival was initiated in 2005 by the First United Church. Working with the United Church group were representatives from the Council of Canadians, Kairos, Amnesty International & White Rock Arts Council. They began by presenting documentary films that focused on social justice & activism. The committee was later joined by other church groups & individuals.
Over the past 5 years the WRSJFF has screened over 60 thought-provoking documentary films on issues not regularly covered by mainstream media or cinema. Film subjects range from the environment, global humanitarian issues & national sovereignty with respect to health care, food security, energy, water, & peace. Films featured are about struggles for control over people, land & resources & address the impact on the daily lives of those involved & remarkable unsung heroes & ordinary citizens who inspire action. By raising social awareness & consciousness we hope to inspire action. Together we will create a better world.

BE A BEACH HERO IN WHITE ROCK!!
Date: Jan 5, 2010
Entry: The Beach Hero program is a series of free interpreted beach walks along White Rock and Crescent beach and is simply amazing! I strongly encourage everyone to come check it out. It's run by the Friends of Semiahmoo Bay and is completely free. You will learn a ton about marine ecosystems as well seeing quite a variety of coastal life, including crabs, seaweed, strange sea bugs, and numerous tidal pool creatures. There are 2 marine walks scheduled for tomorrow at 12pm and 2pm that are guided by very knowledgable biology students. To attend, just meet at the White Rock Pier or Beecher Place at Crescent Beach. I highly recommend this.

We've Got Active Talent in White Rock
Date: Jan 5, 2010
Entry: Sunrunners Capture Fourth Straight Title
by Nick Greenizan - Peace Arch News
If there was any doubt that South Surrey and White Rock were hotbeds for cross-country talent, the question was put to rest last month after the Semiahmoo Sunrunners captured a fourth consecutive Lower Mainland Cross-Country Series championship.
And finishing in second place? Another local team – Ocean Athletics.
The Sunrunners finished the eight-race series – which wrapped up last month with the Gunner Shaw Memorial at Vancouver's Jericho Park – with a total of 1324 points. Ocean Athletics ended up with 1121.
The Sunrunners led their Peninsula counterparts by 100 points heading into the final race, but increased the lead after having the maximum eight team members pick up points.
"We always get a significant number of people out – at least eight or 10, and that's really been the key again," said Sunrunners' Tom Hastie, adding that the team garnered more points this year than they did in 2008.
"People thought we were just a bunch of old farts... It was close though, and we knew the pressure would be on this year."
Though they finished second in the overall team standings, Ocean Athletics had a number of individual triumphs. Maureen de St. Croix finished first in the women's 50-59 year-old division, while her husband, Ted, was second among men 50-59.
In the women's 40-49 year-old category, Ocean Athletics' Jeanie Bezdan placed first, edging second-place Tracy Campbell by 17 points. Bezdan didn't compete in the final two races of the series, but captured a pair of first-place finishes in early season races – including the third race, at Crescent Park Oct. 3.
Hastie said the success of Peninsula athletes – from both clubs – on the cross-country series isn't surprising, since the sport caters to an older audience.
"Cross-country is really popular at the masters' level – which is 40 plus – so even though we're a relatively small population here, it's that age group where we really cash in."

White Rock Firefighters

Entry: Firefighters Scorch Record
by Tracy Holmes - Peace Arch News
White Rock firefighters have logged a new fundraising record for their annual Breakfast with Santa.
Mike Stark said more than $4,500 was collected at the event, held Dec. 5 in the White Rock firehall.
“It’s a new record, absolutely,” Stark said.
Crew members were cooking “flat-out” from 8 a.m., and fed more than 700 by the time noon rolled around.
“The bacon and sausages were flying out the door. The (pancakes) didn’t sit in the tray,” Stark said.
“These guys were moving just to keep up.”
The breakfast is a fundraiser of the career crew’s charitable society.
As in the past, net proceeds will be split between the provincial Burn Fund and Peace Arch News Christmas Fund.
A new addition to the tradition will also send $250 to the Make-a-Wish Foundation.
That was the charity of choice for Peace Arch Elementary students who won a tree-decorating contest that was incorporated into the breakfast.
Peace Arch and White Rock elementary students were given a total of 10 trees to decorate for the firehall event.
Guests Saturday were invited to vote on their favourite, and the winning fir won the respective students the right to pick a charity to benefit from $250 of the breakfast proceeds.
The idea of the contest was to bring the spirit of the fundraiser closer to home with the community’s younger residents.
Stark said firefighters plan to make donating complimentary breakfast tickets to Peace Arch Community Services Food Bank another part of the tradition. Sixty tickets were donated this year.
Next up for the crew is their annual tree chipping event. It is set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 3 in the Centennial Arena parking lot, at 14600 North Bluff Rd. For more information about the fundraising efforts, visit wrfirefighterscharity.com

Entry: Students Put Old Clothes to Good Use
by Hannah Sutherland - Peace Arch News
More than 20 industrial-size garbage bags of winter clothing will be handed out to those in need on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside this holiday season, thanks to efforts by Star of the Sea Elementary’s Environmental Outreach Club.
The group of around 80 students in Grades 4 to 7 began appealing to their schoolmates for new and used coats, scarves, hats and mittens about two weeks ago.
“The theme was keeping someone warm at Christmas,” club co-ordinator Dorita Gaspar said.
The result was 23 bags full of items, which Wayne Brazeau picked up last Friday.
The Peninsula resident has been working independently with two others to collect goods for the homeless, sick, unemployed and destitute on the Downtown Eastside for the last four years.
The volunteers sort, repair and package the items into parcels, which they distribute four times a year to various organizations, such as Agape Street Ministry, women’s shelters and St. Paul’s Hospital.
Last year, the trio delivered more than 200 Christmas parcels, containing everything from socks and blankets to toothbrushes and other hygiene products.
This year, they’re hoping to assemble more than 300 packages – a goal now closer in reach due to the help of Star of the Sea Elementary.
“It’s just overwhelming,” Brazeau said of the contribution. “These children are just wonderful.”
The initiative, as well as other environmental club projects, has taught Grade 7 student Aidan Tammaro to think differently about unwanted belongings.
“Stuff that we don’t want can be used for something else,” he said.
Chelsea Ribeiro agreed, noting that reusing is environmentally sustainable.
“We also learn how we can help the environment.”
The club is now making small boxes out of used Christmas cards to fill with candies and place on plates at an upcoming seniors luncheon.

Some White Rock residents make a difference in their school!

Entry: Message With Bottle
by Tracy Holmes - Peace Arch News
Earl Marriott and Lord Tweedsmuir secondary students thirsting to make a difference in Africa have thousands of ideas for those looking to put a gift with meaning under the tree this Christmas – 5,000 ideas, to be precise.
The 15 teens – all members of a leadership group travelling to Kenya in March – are selling water bottles.
Proceeds from sales of the red, black, white and clear bottles will help the team work with Me to We to build a school and clean water project for children living in the impoverished Maasai and Kipsigis communities.
While there, the students will also study Swahili and play with the local children.
“I don’t know if I can compare it to anything,” Sasha Jivung, in Grade 12 at Earl Marriott, said of the anticipated experience.
“I’m hoping it will make me see everything else that I have done in a different way.”
Me to We is a social enterprise that encourages people to change the world with their daily choices. Its efforts support Free the Children, an organization that strives to empower youth to take action for other, less fortunate children.
Jivung, 17, said students got the OK for the trip from the school district just a few weeks ago and are now working “like crazy” to raise as much as they can of the approximately $4,000-per-student cost.
They plan to share details of the trip with local elementary students to boost awareness, and are hopeful the water bottle campaign, Thirst for Change, will be a hit.
The commodity was chosen carefully, Jivung said. They are made of recycled, recyclable and biodegradable plastic, and guaranteed to disintegrate in a landfill in one to five years.
Teacher organizer Susan Hunter-Jivung – Sasha’s mom – described the service project as one “aimed at helping tomorrow’s leaders understand the world’s poverty issues.”
The bottles fit in with the message that every child deserves clean water and an education, she said.
In Kenya, the students will work for at least four hours per day, meet the families their efforts are benefiting and take part in a safari.
They leave March 5.

Knit one, pearl one was the winning combination for Peace Arch Elementary students this month – and Peace Arch Community Services Food Bank.
Nathalie LaRoche’s Grade 5 charges raised $300 through the sale of scarves they knitted as part of a project to help others this Christmas. They worked on the winter wear during spare class time and at recess, learning the skill from some of the children’s grandmothers. Even students in other classes caught the fever.
While they had hoped to sell each scarf for a $10 donation to the food bank, LaRoche said some of the creations inspired as much as $40 for the cause.
“It was just a beautiful time,” she said.

Not only does it offer a place for today's local talent to perform, but it also offered a place for groups decades before me. Out on the Sandbars
Date: Jan 4, 2010
Entry: My grandmother has lived in White Rock ever since she moved here with to follow her husband after WWII. From the beginning she loved the beach and watched it grow to be the love of many other people in the growing area. It never ceases to excite her when we drive down and she sees that the tide has receded to bare soft sand. To this day, I occasionally take her down to the sandbars where she can walk for hundreds of meters before being halted by the ocean. Not only are the sandbars a favorite walking pastime for my grandmother, but it also harbors a place in the hearts of many other age groups that come out to take advantage of the sandbars for sandcastles, sunbathing, sand races, skimboarding, tidal pool exploring, sand-dollar hunting and much much more.

Sandcastle Skule
Date: Jan 4, 2010
Entry: The 2010 Uptown White Rock Sandcastle Competition Event team were invited to put on a "Sandcastle Skule" for the kids visiting Science World Vancouver between Christmas and New Years. For four days we taught kids of all ages how to work together, use their imagination, and physically build a sand sculptures while promoting our city, and the competition. After each session when the kids all agreed that the sand sculpture was finished, we asked the magical question " what's the best part when you've finished building a sand sculpture"? Oh yes, they knew the answer! Jumping on it... hopping like little bunnies, scratching like chickens, "Woo hooing" as they had a ball getting all that energy out! It's really lovely living in a community which is open to supporting a new youth start up venture like the 2010 White Rock Sandcastle Competition. Our competition turns into a free self guided walking tour of the sand sculptures from the competition, and the whole event is being created by local youths working together to learn new skills and give back to our lovely community. We're helping everyone live healthier with the free self guided sandcastle walking tour, so come on out to White Rock anytime between July 25 and August 1 2010 for some fresh air, a beautiful view, meet new friends, and a lovely walk.
