The perfect "dog friendly" park!

Entry: Each weekend, it's a treat to take our dog to the BX Dog Park in Vernon! Our big, floppy friendly Bernese Mountain Dog can sense the direction of the park even when we are miles away. He gets sooo excited in the car and can hardly wait to get out an run around on acres of land put aside for families and their four legged companions!
The BX Park is truly amazing....a wide open field leads into the park with huge areas for the dogs to play, socialize and the owners can relax knowing their pups are safe. Further into the park, the trails lead through a magnificent cedar lined trail system with the recent addition of bridges that help protect the waterways running through this park.
Vernon thinks about it's community and the needs of the residents and this is another great example of the wonderful lifestyle we are immersed in everyday living in the North Okanagan'! You can't help but LOVE living here!!

ZUMBA for a Cause!

Entry: Zumba for a Cause was a 2 hour Zumbathon held on Oct 2, 2009 at the Schubert Center. This event was planned in support of the fundraising efforts for the Vernon Jubilee Hospital New Tower that is scheduled to open Spring of 2011. This year the proceeds went specifically to the Maternal/Child Unit. Zumba is a latin based fitness class that blends rhythms and dance styles such as merengue, salsa, reggaton, bollywood, african, mambo and more! This was the biggest Zumba party Vernon had ever seen! It was a SOLD OUT event, over 200 women...and handful of men, took part in this fun filled, energizing, feel good two hour dance party! This Zumbathon was lead by 12 Fitness Instructors from various fitness clubs in Vernon. Plus we had the privilege of dancing to the the live beats of African drums. $5000 was raised this year, and we can’t wait for next year’s event! What more can you ask for than a bunch of women shaking their booty's! ZUMBA....”Ditch the Workout, Join the Party!”

My passion...my sport!

Entry: I've been an avid Dragon Boater for about 11 years now. Up until last year, my husband and I drove 50 minutes one way from our home near Vernon to paddle in Kelowna. In 2008, we said "enough" and we decided to form a mixed Dragon Boat Team in Vernon. We put an ad in the local newspaper inviting people to come out and try the sport for the first time. We had more than 30 people respond and from that group we formed the most amazing team I have ever been on. People from all walks of life, all ages, all races and interests. But the common thread we all shared was a love of taking a risk and trying something new.
Pictured in these photos are, of course, one of the most spectacular lakes in the world, Kalamalka Lake, and the team I coach and am so very proud of...Poseidon's Fury! No matter what race we are in...this team always serves up a GOLD MEDAL performance! My commmitment to them...be their coach and to one day create a Paddling Centre in Vernon where all non-motorized boat traffic can call home!
Dragon Boating is my sport...it is my true passion...and this team continually makes me the proudest coach on the circuit!!

Entry: Vernon wins Olympic athletes visit! Yes, indeed, Mike Nell, a 2006 Olympic Ski Jumper came for a special visit to Vernon! And what an incredible ambassador for sport he is!
Mike was amazing with the kids and they just loved him and his 9 foot...yes 9 foot skis! Kids got a chance to look and hold on to the skis, ask Mike all sorts of questions and just generally hang out with him! He was such a cool guy!
Just check out the photos to see how involved he was! Thanks Mike...we LOVED having you come to our fair City (where it never rains)!!

Care & Attention of an entire community!

Entry: The summer of 2009 was extremely dry in the Okanagan and within one single weekend, three major fires broke out on the westside of Okanagan Lake. Two of the fires threatened a number of homes and were deemed to be a priority. The Terrace Mountain Fire, while far from most structures, continued to burn! However, while the fire seemed to be a distance away, the winds changed and several communities that became threatened were eventually evacuated. Because of our political boundaries, our emergency centre was set up in West Kelowna which would have resulted in a 90 minute drive to register. As Vernon is only 30 minutes away, it didn't take long for the City of Vernon to assemble their emergency services teams and start to accommodate evacuees in Vernon...a place much closer to home for us westsiders. Evacauees were welcomed with open arms in Vernon and I will never forget the hours of time and effort both City staff and volunteers put in to make my neighbours feel more comfortable and safe. The pictures attached tell the story of just one evening...just a few hours in our lives that left us not really knowing if we would have homes the next morning. But we did know we had the entire community of Vernon behind us, waiting to help where they could. A million thank yous to our friends across the lake...it is in the nature of the citizens of Vernon to be so kind and considerate and we are so fortunate to have Vernon as our community!

Entry: Once again the spirit of Vernon is shown in this fantastic facility that our Soccer Association worked towards for many years. A dream of many avid soccer players, it was realized in 2008 when the final touches were put on this indoor facility! A healthy living venue that welcomes people of all ages, the VantageOne Soccer Centre offers various leagues as well as a specialized training program, the Whitecaps FC Vernon Soccer Academy. Another example of the drive, dedication, determination and Spirit of Vernon!

With several wineries on our doorstep, there is nothing better than an afternoon savouring the incredible wineries and the spectacular valley, mountain and lake views they offer! We are so very fortunate to live in such a stunning part of the world!

Entry: It's been a whole new experience learning Twitter but these past few weeks have been AMAZING!!!. I'm so excited for the entries Vernon has posted on GamesTown 2010 that I found myself "Twittering" telling my favourite "Tweoples" to go online and check our GamesTown Vernon site.
Twitter and Facebook have been a buzz with reminders to all of my contacts to "Tell Your Story" on Vernon's GamesTown page. The very cool part...other Tweeters picked up my message and retweeted it around out community! My online friends are helping out in true Vernon style!

Entry: Pumpkin Fest fun at the farm included some games town spirit! Mike Nell visited the farm and shared his experiences as an 2006 olympian as well as gave guests a close up look at his nine foot jumping skis. Visitors also took turns taking photos at the face cut-outs getting in the spirit for the exciting 2010 games ahead! The family,staff, and guests at Davison Orchards signed a banner wishing all our athletes the best as they train and prepare for the upcoming 2010 games in Vancouver!

The Halloween Treat - Just One of Downtown Vernon's Many Fun Events

Entry: Every year on Halloween up to a thousand youngsters wearing their spookest costumes descend on Downtown Vernon to scare all and sundry and to collect sweet treats from local merchants. The Halloween Treat Trail is just one of Downtown Vernon's many highly popular annual events. Other annual events that the Downtown Vernon Association organizes to tap into Vernon's vast reservoir of community spirit include Festival of Christmas Traditions (November 27th, 2009, the Sunshine Festival (June 19, 2010), the Sun Valley Classic Car Cruise-In (August 6, 2010). We are also very proud of our history in Downtown Vernon (incorporated in 1892) with our gallery of 25 murals, some up to 100 feet wide and 40 feet high, depicting the pioneers who settled our area. How It Began

Entry: As the end of the entry period for Gamestown 2010 draws near I sit here reflecting back to how it began for me. I am sure the annual TBC Network Conference in Vancouver was where the seed was planted. This combined with my friend Vals encouragment has kept me fired up . Vernon will be a gracious host to the Olympic Torch and the entire community will celebrate its arrival here. And during the Olympic and Paralympic games I know my community will cheer and support all our Canadian athletes as they strive to be the best! This being my last entry I want to say that I am more convinced now than ever that Vernon B.C has GAME and SPIRIT !

Inspired - Square and Round Dance Jamboree in Vernon

Entry: In July of this year Vernon played host to the BC Square Dance and Round Dance Federations Jamboree. I was fortunate enough to attend on a work related mission. I had never seen square dancing and had definately never imagined the skill and hard work that is required. Many of the participants are middle age or seniors and most are in amazing shape due to the dancing. The colours of the costumes and the high energy and smiles all around make it contagious! If Vernon is ever fortunate enough to be host again I will definately attend.

Entry: World Champion wheelchair curler, Sonja Gaudet was the guest speaker at Davison Orchards staff dinner held Oct 26. Sonja shared her experiences at the 2006 Torino para olympics when she won the Gold Metal for Canada. "Sonja was very educational and inspirational as she shared her story" says Tamra Davison "an amazing women who focuses on her abilities rather than her inabilities." The staff at Davison Orchards will be cheering for her and her team as she represents Canada, British Columbia and her home town Vernon in Vancouver this March at the 2010 Para-olympic games. Go for the Gold Sonja!

Now they have to go through a golf course, ride beside/sometimes on a train track before hitting the fantastic Polson Park and its trails. What a great legacy for this community from the Olympics!
