Teens and sports
Date: Jan 8, 2010
Entry: For years we have watched the teens in this town as they play their sports-swimming, basketball, hockey, soccer, volleyball, whatever. We have mainly noticed that those involved in sports have little time or inclination to participate in vandalism and/or other things detrimental to themselves and the community!

10 minutes to memories
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: What creates availability to amazing experiences? In Smithers it's its proximity to any valley activity. From town-centre it's seven minutes to the airport; five minutes to the golf and country club; five minutes to par three golf; five minutes to the Riverside Park and access to the Perimetre Trail that encompasses the entire community; ten minutes to Twin Falls, a major tourist attraction; five minutes to the Wildlife Museum, housed in an igloo structure, and is the largest wildlife museum north of central BC; three minutes to the pool and aquatic centre; one minute to the newly opened pool hall where valley kids gather, hang and share good times; ten minutes-plus to the world-renowned fossil beds and incredible hiking trails in the Babine Mountain Provincial Park; and all this for a populatio of 5400. It's the closeness to all the enjoyable experiences that makes our town unique... three minutes to the high school housing the Della Herman Theatre where all community productions are presented; two minutes to the old church, where smaller productions occur.... and this is if we were driving, but most times we walk because we can, because all these experiences are close on foot or bicycle and in Smithers we're concerned with the environment and reward our walkers and cyclists. We walk, we hike, we bike, we live, we laugh, we raise our families and we love the community we chose to live in -- for the lifestyle it allows us.

Dancing fools
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: Even as the calendar shows the age of 60 nearing there's still plenty of opportunities for fun-filled, do-able activities for active seniors in Smithers -- like the Tap lessons my husband and I have been doing now for the past four months. Okay, so we're not exactly "feet of flames" but we take lessons from amazing dance instructors who share their time from teaching youth who are award-winning dancers and provide incredible dance performance routines several times a year to the community to taking us seniors through dance routines that are fun and provide a great workout. We can't wait for Wednesday nights when we hit the studio, put on our taps and take to the floor. We sound better than we look but we have a tremendous amount of fun.

VIBE - Visitor Information for a Better Economy
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: In service to the many tourists that travel to northern BC and spend time in Smithers, the Visitor Center started a mobile visitor counsellor service four years ago. While many tourists stop by the Visitor Centre for area information and maps this program is intended to meet the tourists at area attractions and campgrounds by a mobile visitor information counsellor that arrives in a decalled van filled with brochures, maps, event information and a friendly "Smithers Hello." The event information informs the visitors of musical coffee houses taking place, activities happening in the community and promotes our very popular Farmer's Market and summer activities like Midsummer Festival and the Fall Fair. Many tourists aren't on a time-sensitive trip and with the information provided allows the visitors to stay a few extra days in our town to take part in events like the weekly Lawnchair Lounge (music by local entertainers on Main Street Friday nights). They love the Farmer's Market with exhibit booths filled with locally grown or produced items, excellent baked goods from home-operated bakeries and crafts made right here in the Bulkley Valley. The Vibe Van is really appreciated as an excellent ambassador service.

Backpackers share expertise with visitors
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: In Smithers in all four seasons members of the BV Backpackers take locals and visitors for weekly hikes in the summer or cross-country backcountry trips in winter. Each week a different member is the leader of a specific hike and invites anyone that wants to join in the outdoor experience to come out and participate with the group. They meet at the Safeway parking lot and then head off to various trails around the area. It makes visitors feel welcome joining in and provides the opportunity for locals to discover trails in their own backyard. It's an inclusive and generous gesture from the Backpackers in sharing their expertise and knowledge of the area in their encouragement for all to be involved. Hikes vary in degrees of difficulty so all fitness level and skill level new hikers can get involved.

Sporty Seniors
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: One of the attractions of a community the size of Smithers is that healthy, active seniors can walk to any activity they're active in. In winter they slip on their show grips, pull on their toques and head to carpet bowling, crib, bridge, senior's weekly luncheons, the pool, shopping and local restaurants where they gather to talk about their active lifestyles. Excellent curb work makes it easy to access sidewalks; extra wide aisles at many shops allows for those confined to chairs to gain access. In Smithers the winters, while beautiful and part of the reason we love our town for all seasons, can be cold and icy... but our northern seniors are a hearty bunch and I know my walking 80-year old mom hasn't missed an event yet due to cold or sno because even at aub-zero all the amenities are basically only ten to fifteen minutes away. It's a pretty contained, easy to get around in town.

Graffiti-Gone
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: Thanks to the efforts of local students spearheaded by our community police officer graffiti is almost non-existent in our town. There was a rash of incidents a couple of years ago but an iniative by the community police-student partnership has disguised the artwork. This group felt that the longer the graffiti remained on buildings the more artwork it attracted so the group sets out to immediately whitewash any new graffiti as it appears. The result has been amazing and our downtown core is now virtually graffiti-free. This initiative plus many local artists creating mural paintings employing the aid of talented youth artists has been a huge success with community members working together with people of all ages to find a solution to this problem.

healthy doctor
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: Recently my husband slipped on the ice and broke his hip. Following surgery in Prince George, he was returned home to mend. After a couple of weeks he was to have the staples removed from his surgery, but his feet were very swollen with blisters from being in bed, and he was unable to wear shoes or walk.
I spoke with the doctor's secretary and explained our situation, there was no way I was going to be able to get my husband to the doctors office to have his follow-up visit and have the staples removed. She arranged for a home visit from the doctor. Not only did the doctor kindly come to our home to tend to my husband, he arrived on his bicycle...taking the opportunity of the housecall to get a little exercise for himself. Now, where else would you get a homevisit, leave alone a doctor arriving by bicycle in -15 degree weather? Just a small example of why people choose to live and stay in Smithers.,

Magical Musical Moment
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: Last year a group of vocalists in Smithers organized the "Festival of Voices" where they brought in vocal clinicians to teach vocal techniques to the over 100 regional attendees from communities in the north that travelled to Smithers. The lower mainland clinicians were amazed at the turnout and the spirit and enthusiasm of the 8 choirs that came for personal development. The closing of the weekend took place in the restored Old Church during Earth Hour where the vocalists formed a circle around an array of candles, took out acoustic guitars and sang through the non-electric but electrifying hour. Dancing and merriment provided truly magical musical moments for all well into the night displaying the diversity of talent in the valley.
