Athletic Training 12a: Endurance Training
Date: Oct 30, 2009
Entry: Our school (QDL) has just implemented a new course around fitness and healthy living. We have partnered with FaCT Canada (www.fact-canada.com) to develop Athletic training 12a: Endurance Training. This course is meant to be the first in a series of 3 courses dedicated to providing students with opportunities to work with cutting edge technology and knowledge around fitness, training and healthy living.
This 4 credit grade 12 course is open to all students in BC in grades 10-12, and aims at providing access to cutting edge training tools and knowledge regardless of the student's location. We don't prescribe the one right method of training, but rather work with the students to develop their critical thinking skills around understanding how their body responds to training.
Students use the provided heart rate monitor, training software and lactate testing equipment to assess their lactate balance point. They explore how this information can then be used in the field to help determine how hard and how often they should be training. Students can see first hand how their own unique physiological responses can affect how they train and begin to be aware of the limitations of the cookbook approach to endurance training.
Students also participate in a global discussion board around fitness and training, gaining experience and insight from professional athletes and trainers from around the globe.
Athletic Training 12a is a course designed so that the students can use the hours spent training/practicing towards hours within the course. This means that students are actively using the knowledge and tools while they are training. The majority of the course will see students engaged in training and activity and not simply sitting behind a computer.

They can be found around the community sweeping, painting, landscaping, and they can also be found in the businesses organizing offices and work spaces; pretty much just lending a helping hand. The ambassadors also assist in welcoming tourists and helping to make our city a better place to work and play.

Quesnel's Fire Halls
Date: Oct 30, 2009
Entry: Quesnel has three fire halls; loyally serving Quesnel and the area since before 1910.
Our fire halls evolved from the local ‘bucket brigade’ and early pictures show a pump made from a windmill on the bank of the river and snowballs (in the winter of course) to be used as equipment to fight fires. The Quesnel Fire Department offers the following services to the community: fire suppression, public education, fire safety inspections, fire investigations, industrial fire protection and training, confined space and high angle rescue, aircraft crash rescue and firefighting, medical first responder and hazardous materials decontamination. We are proud of our firefighters and their community spirit.

Canada Post Sled Dog Mail Run
Date: Oct 30, 2009
Entry: Every January in Quesnel the Annual Dog Sled Mail Run is held. The participants start in Quesnel and head to Wells with bags of mail. Usually about 20 sled runners are sworn in by Canada Post and are accompanied by snowmobilers, snow-shoes, skijorers and cross country skiers along the Historic Cariboo Wagon Road from Quesnel to Wells. This run is one of the last remaining opportunities in Canada to have your letter delivered by a team of dogs that have been sanctioned by Canada Post to deliver mail. The mail run was originally introduced in 1993 as a demonstration for the North Cariboo Winter Games and since then has become an annual event. The teams range from three dogs to fourteen and the 60 mile (100km) trail is well maintained from Quesnel to Barkerville and then back to Wells. This event is over a three day period and the public is invited to Troll Ski Resort on the Saturday to view some entertainment and contests. The purpose of these events is to provide the public with knowledge about the traditions and history of mushing and dog sledding.
