Quesnel Gives From the Heart
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: The community of Quesnel is a generous, supporting community in so many ways. Since 2002, the Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life has been a part of the fabric of our community - and we have raised well over $1,000,000 to help in the fight against cancer. Relay For Life takes place every year on the Saturday after the long weekend and more than 1000 participants and volunteers take part in the 12 relay to show their support for those people living with cancer and to remember those who have been lost to the disease. New to Relay in 2009 was the Fight Back Ceremony, which challenges people to take steps to fight cancer in their own lives, and in their community. Relay Day is open to the entire community, with activities and entertainment from all parts of the community. It is truly inspiring to see everyone come together to CELEBRATE survivors, REMEMBER loved ones, and FIGHT BACK against a disease that takes too many.

Quesnel's the Best
Date: Jan 6, 2010
Entry: I moved to Quesnel recently from Toronto for a job. (A great job, but this story is about the City). I've always loved B.C. for the forests and wildlife and have been to Atlin many summers painting. When I got a call back about the job I had a closer look at the map, as I pictured it being one of the many small towns lower mainland. Northern Cariboo! I did a latitude comparison to Ontario and it's the same as the most northern city in Ontario on the shores of Thunder Bay. Not quite Tuktoyaktuk, but still. My first week here I asked people where do you buy shoes and everyone said the hardware store basement downtown...it's true and they have good shoes! (A pair of yellow knee high insulated rubber tree climbing boots with cleats I saw there look pretty practical right now.) Before moving here I did tons of research on the web & found out many interesting facts, things that made me smile and made me curious: smallest Walmart in the world, largest gold pan in the world, longest wooden footbridge in North America, a Communities in Bloom winner and annual participant, an Arts & Recreation Centre that had BOTH arts & recreation with varied & interesting programming, Quesnel has a rodeo (I love horses), main industry is timber (we've just been named the "Timber Capital of North America") lakes around here are renowned for trout...my favorite fish, housing costs are very reasonable...you can live on a lake & just be a 10 minute drive to town, the Bowron Lake Provincial Park is nearby & an excellent canoeing destination as the lakes form a circular chain, and lots and lots more. When I moved here I was so busy getting everything done and getting accustomed to all that was new that the feeling of Quesnel being home snuck up on me. The particular point I noticed this was when I was driving on to Front Street coming back from the "big" city of Prince George. A feeling of calmness, pride and happiness that I was home, just driving on a small street in a small city surrounded by rivers and evergreen hills.

Great place
Date: Jan 6, 2010
Entry: We settled here just over 4 years ago after several other stops in the province and we are here to stay. It's a great place to raise a family. You have the small town feeling with some of the large center ameneties and it makes for a wonderful community. You can really get to know people here. Our kids are in hockey, soccer, baseball, scouts, and guides and the volunteers that make all that possible are outstanding. Then there is the other activities such as the great local fishing and hunting, the skiiing and sledding and the list goes on.
There is a ton of active volunteer groups that put in alot of effort to keep this area alive and kicking and I have to say WE LOVE IT HERE.

Birding Paradise
Date: Jan 6, 2010
Entry: Quesnel is home to many migratory birds. We have pelicans on our lakes, swans in our fields, and eagles flying overhead. The local birding group was recently able to field over 30 birders in an annual winter count. We have songbirds and waterbirds, the call of the loon and the tap-tap of the woodpecker.
many of our local farms and ranches also participate in bird counts. Keeping watch over the Mountain Bluebird and tracking how many successful hatchlings there are. Same goes for the Barn Swallow - a bird that is rapidly running out of territory - we keep count and send the information in.

We had the Olympic Spirit long ago!
Date: Jan 6, 2010
Entry: Quesnel has long had the Olympic Spirit:
Even before the Vancouver/Whistler bid was announced as hosts for the 2010 Winter Games, the Quesnel Forest Service has been celebrating the Olympics and promoting a healthy work environment in their own way. In 2000 during the Sydney Olympics the office held several lunch time events and then in 2004 during the Athens Olympics the office held a weeklong series of noon hour activities that ranged from Volleyball and horseshoes to an Olympics trivia contest and a bike race. We also have a community flower and vegetable garden on site that our bevy of green thumb gardeners toil at so the rest of us can enjoy a fresh strawberry or carrot and smell the aroma’s of blooming flowers.
This year in anticipation of Canada’s first Gold medal on home soil, we are having a Gold Medal pool that involves all 86 medal events. The first 3 gold medals won by Canada will make a lucky square holder a little bit richer. We are especially proud that two of our own were recently chosen to be an Event Coordinator and a Venue Ambassador for the Olympic showcase at Robson Square where we are sure they will be a dynamic duo!
GO Quesnel Go and more importantly Eh Oh, Canada Go!

IN LOVE WITH THE NORTH CARIBOO!
Date: Jan 6, 2010
Entry: We moved to the Quesnel area in 2002 and absolutely love it! Having moved around the province for many years, we have found everything we want in the North Cariboo. Community spirit, fresh air, forests and fields, opportunities abound for both small business and outdoor activities, culture, wide open spaces, beautiful skies, wonderful, friendly people. For a family, it is a great place to raise one's childrens... for adults it is simply a fantastic place to live! For someone wishing to begin a business... the community is supportive! One thing for sure is that Quesnel has a soul! People move here and stay! Although there are MANY places throughout Canada where we could live, and be very happy, the North Cariboo, and Quesnel, works for us! WE SIMPLY LOVE IT HERE!

Best place on earth to live!
Date: Jan 6, 2010
Entry: Our family absolutely loves Quesnel! From swimming in the Cottonwood River each summer, fishing, camping, hiking out to Deep Creek falls, to cross country and downhill skiing, sledding, and snowshoing in the winter! Let's not forget the riverwalk that is utilized by many each day all year round. Quesnel is a great place to live, work, and raise your kids. I have lived in a few different communities and have never seen a sense of pride or the genuine friendliness such as that shown by the people of Quesnel.

Healthy by choice, not chance
Date: Jan 5, 2010
Entry: In February, Quesnel is holding the second Coronary Health Improvement Project to help people live a healthy lifestyle. The Program covers diet, exercise, and stress relief to control factors leading to heart disease and is proven to lower cholesterol, blood pressure, weight, blood sugar levels, reduce depression and enhance overall quality of life. Last year 36 participants achieved amazing results.
As well, Quesnel offers activities for everyone in any season. In winter there is skiing, skating, hockey, curling and snow shoeing. For our disabled residents there is sledge hockey and wheelchair curling. We have an indoor soccer facility. In summer there is kayaking, canoeing, swimming, cycling, hiking, numerous horse riding activities, running etc. Many activities are also adapted for those with physical or mental challenges.
In addition, to add to the quality of life of all the residents, there is a fantastic level of volunteering. Not only do we have the usual volunteer organizations supplying services to our residents and raising money for projects large and small, but there are also more unusual programs, such as animal therapy for the elderly and disabled, there is HANDYDART transport for those not able to get around easily, and we also feed our souls with a wide variety of artistic, musical and historical events and programs.
All in all, Quesnel offers something for everyone, in a caring and giving community.

Our housing prices make it an attractive place to retire.

Family Tradition
Date: Jan 5, 2010
Entry: I was born and raised in a small community just outside of Quesnel. My parents were very positive role models when it came to community pride and participation in community projects. They were actively involved in the building of the Kersley Community Hall and the Kersley Arena - both of which still serve this close-knit community. Their pride and commitment to their community served as an example and now that I have my own family we actively participate and volunteer in the beautiful City of Quesnel. We are proud of our hometown and do what we can to help our City prosper!
