Since 1885
Date: Jan 9, 2010
Entry: My family has lived in Quesnel for the past 125 years, my great great grandfather came here from Ontario searching for gold as a young man in 1885. When I graduated from highschool, I left to the Island to the lush coast for the adventure of a lifetime, vowing to walk my own path and seek my own sense of self.
After 18 years in Victoria, fate brought me back to Quesnel to find the family values that have been here for generations upon generations. The gold is still here perhaps not in the physical scape but in the hearts of the people, the caring community and a special rural way of life.

Kluskus Wildfire - August 2009
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: Fire crews, equipment operators and Out of Province personnel, came together to work with the BC Wildfire Management Branch Unit Crews, to extinguish the Kluskus Interface Wildfire. Crews and operators stayed at various camps within an hour’s drive of the fire site. One of these camps was set up in the Village of Nazko. On the evening of August 20, 2009, there was a spectacular thunderstorm in the area and people watched the skies into the wee hours. Most folks had retired for the night but a young Quesnel skidder operator and a crew boss from the Alberta crew continued to watch the heavens. They witnessed a lightening strike approximately a kilometre from the fire camp and the fellows could tell that a fire had been ignited. They jumped into a truck and headed to the site and spent the next two hours eliminating the threat of another potential interface fire and kept the Nazko Village out of harms way. Heroes we say.

Curlers love to Bonspiel in Quesnel!
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: Curlers love to Bonspiel in Quesnel!
There’s no secret to why Quesnel is host to an abundance of annual bonspiels and why the ice is filled with shouts of hurry hard every week day where more than 100 teams are looking for a little wick and roll. The location right down town within easy walking distance to Hotels, the Casino and several excellent restaurants and pubs make it a no brainer. Add in the friendly reception you get from the staff at the rink (where sliders, grippers and brooms are lent out to anyone needing them) and the down home cooking from the cafe and it’s truly a heaven on ice regardless of the score in the game.
Two annual bonspiels that stand out are the Spectra Energy Men’s and Ladies annual gatherings held in February each year. Originally the Westcoast Transmission bonspiels, Quesnel was the obvious choice being located close to half way on the pipeline from Westcoast’s head office on Georgia Street in Vancouver and the Operations hub for Natural Gas processing in Fort Nelson and Taylor.
The Men’s bonspiel is the longest running of the two and celebrated its 51st annual edition in 2009 in no small part to the fantastic hospitality that the Curling Rink and local businesses have consistently supplied!
Looking forward to many more Bonspiels to come in the Curlers Sanctuary, Quesnel!

Olympian inspires Quesnel Girls
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: My husband and I have lived in Quesnel for 20 years and raised both our daughters here. Quesnel is a great town. Quesnel has good people, good schools and lots for people to do. The sports in Quesnel are plenty for both adults and Kids. We have soccer, hockey, skiing, downhill and cross country, football, lacrosse, ringett and of course our river walk trail and hiking/biking trails. For kids there are also the organized sports in school.
My youngest daughter participated in all of the organized sports in school, volleyball, basketball and track and field. She made life time friends and learned healthy life style choices.
My oldest daughter was in cross country running from elementary school to grade 12 and was fortunate to have gone to the provincials 5 years in a row. The cross country provincials were usually held down in the lower mainland and the school would charter a bus. Load kids from the northern communities, teachers, chaperones and off they would go. The Quesnel kids were great ambassadors for our town and made teachers, and parents proud.
The Correlieu girls cross country team brought home the silver medal one year for Quesnel. It was a great experience for the team. One thing they will always remember is a special guest speaker at the medal ceremonies. None other than Simon Whitfield. He was great inspiration and role model for the kids. Some of the girls got a great souvenir and had their pictures taken with him.
A few girls from the team went off to school on sport scholarships. I see many of the other girls around Quesnel and they are still running, including my daughter. She still runs for a healthy lifestyle choice. I guess once a runner always a runner.
