Work Safe
Date: Dec 30, 2009
Entry: Weyerhaeuser celebrated a safety milestone in their Princeton Timberlands operations. The contractors who work in logging, hauling, road construction and road maintenance have worked over a year without any injuries. To celebrate this milestone, Weyerhaeuser Timberlands hosted a dinner with the contractors and also provided some specific recognition to the log haulers. A new set of light weight log wrappers was raffled off and the lucky hauler was Don Burnstad. The one year injury free milestone is a real credit to all the people who work in our local forests. The safety effort is led by the contractors and Weyerhaeuser representatives who work together on a safety committee to improve safety performance.
Rob Marshall, Timberlands Manager in Princeton stated “ this is a significant achievement when you consider that every day there are over 120 people that work in the woods, often in all kinds of hazardous weather and ground conditions. Weyerhaeuser would like to extend their thanks to everyone involved in making our forests a safe place to work.”

Making a difference
Date: Dec 30, 2009
Entry: For over ten years, The Bridge has provided an opportunity for adults and teenagers to complete their education in an alternate setting. Whether it is an adult who cannot fit school into their work schedule or a school age student who seeks a different choice for working towards their graduation, the school does its best to provide a timetable that will fit. Almost 1000 students have taken advantage of their program over the years.
What started off as a Continuing Education Centre for adults has evolved into an alternate school for younger students. Many of the adults in Princeton who wanted to complete their graduation requirements have already done so. The result has been a slow decrease in the average age of the student population. The school is still open to all residents of the town who would like to upgrade or complete their Dogwood Certificate.
Each year, five or six students receive their graduation certificate. Many of these worked at home and dropped in when they could to pick up more assignments.
The complete spectrum of courses leading to a Dogwood Certificate is offered. Many adults who have been out of school for several years choose to complete the "Adult Dogwood". This certificate only requires the completion of English, Math and three other Grade 12 courses. Often, other types of certificates that have been received over the years can be used for credit to complete these requirements.

Entry: Junior "A" teams taking to the ice for some great exhibition hockey.
The Trail Smoke Eaters, the Langley Chiefs and the Powell River Kings came to town for three games of summertime fun and excitement and first teams to put blades to ice were the Powell River Kings and the Trail Smoke Eaters.
Junior "A" hockey is fast paced, end to end excitement for the fans as these young men try to impress their coaching staff and put on a great game for the fans. As the youngsters work the kinks and creaks out of their bones, they are gearing up for a very hectic and long season of travelling and late night bus rides.
At the arena this week, we have had coaches, agents and scouts from all parts of the hockey spectrum looking at these young and talented players and just maybe, some will move on up the ladder to a higher level of hockey.
Coach 'Duner' must be doing something right as many of his alumni have gone on to bigger and better ice rinks to play in front of larger and noisier crowds in the bigger centres where hockey fills the arenas with screaming hockey fanatics.
Some of the players that were on the 2007-2008 Princeton Posse Eddie Mountain West Championship team have gone on to other teams looking to beef up their roster.
Jeremy Wagner and Micah Anderson have gone to Germany to play in their pro league, Scott Ramsay has gone to the Chilliwack Bruins, Dan Hillman is playing with the Lloydminster Bobcats, Riley Ferster has gone on to the Fort Frances Sabres, Logan Johnston is playing in Penticton with the Vees, Brendan Stephan has gone down to the States with the Everett Silvertips, Brad Goss and Andrew Walsh have signed with the langley Chiefs and Brett Van Ripper has moved on to the Alberta College Conference to play for the Portage College Voyageurs.

Entry: The Valley First Princeton Posse Junior 'B' hockey club got a major shot in the arm as FortisBC presented a donation cheque to president Stan Turner.
Michael Mulcahy, Vice President of Customer and Corporate Services for FortisBC visited the 'Vault' last Wednesday afternoon for the $3500 donation to the Posse.
"We are pleased to sponsor the Princeton hockey club ," said Mulcahy, " with FortisBC as a major partner, we look forward to seeing the Princeton Posse Hockey Club build on their last year's success and achievements. It is certainly a pleasure to be involved in the community at the grass roots level and to be affiliated with an quality organization that draws well from the community and we look forward the team having a good year and hopefully this will be a long relationship."
Also on hand for the presentation was assistant coach, Kevin Robillard who said of the donation, "We will use this money specifically for new helmets and gloves for the players. We need to have the best equipment for the safety of our players and this donation will go a long way in that regard, we thank FortisBC for all of their help in the upcoming season."
Mayor Randy McLean was at the presentation as well and had this to say, "With partners and donations like this one from FortisBC, we are fortunate that the team is here. If we did not have the support from local businesses, the team would surely not survive. This is also a positive thing for the youth of our town, the more we can give them to do, the better for everyone. We are heavily indebted to FortisBC because they have always been there for us when we needed them and here they are again today."

good samaritan
Date: Dec 29, 2009
Entry: It's only in a small town that you find people who, when you find an envelope, they recognize the hand writing on the envelope, know who wrote it, who it belongs to even when it says Merry Christmas and only a first name on it, and knows where that person works and hands it into the office so that person gets their envelope. It's the generosity of people from a small town that this can be achieved. In a big city you may have someone hand it in, but not all of the rest. Thank you to whomever found the envelope and turned it in.

Another great clinic
Date: Dec 23, 2009
Entry: Top-notch basketball coaches, Allison and Mike McNeil who work with the provincial basketball programs holding clinics were in Princeton again. Allison is also the head coach of the National Women's team. She grew up in Princeton and is a positive role model for these small town kids. She is living proof that if you work hard and have discipline anything is possible. McNeil had an impressive career as a star basketball player before moving on to inspire future generations. Mike McNeil is not from Princeton, but himself had a great career in basketball before moving into coaching. He is fantastic with the kids and everyone learned a lot from the clinic. The MccNeil duo keep moving our basketball program up and up and up. Every time they leave, they leave a wealth of knowledge behind.

Put your money where your mouth is
Date: Dec 23, 2009
Entry: Regional Director Brad Hope had been hearing great things about the youth basketball programs in Princeton. He wanted to help out. RDOS donated $1000 to the program at PSS to buy reversible hockey jerseys and hold a basketball clinic. "Bringing the clinics to us means we reach everyone," said head coach. "This money would only send one player if the clinic was out of town. WE would not be having the success we are having, if it wasn't for all the community support we receive."
