A place for the family
Date: Jan 6, 2010
Entry: The Princeton Family Drop-In Centre is officially open and offering a comfortable place for families with children ages newborn to six years a place to visit, have coffee, a healthy snack, chat with other parents and allow the kids to interact with other children.
"Communities for Kids is the committee that actually got the program up and running," says program facilitator, Renée Hartwell of the new centre. "They've renovated the inside— we have a brand new kitchen—it's more of a social environment where they [families] can drop in when they want, come and have a healthy snack."
Hartwell, who has a B.A. in Psychology, feels that Princeton will benefit greatly with the drop-in centre, creating a healthy familial environment, especially for many of the single mothers in the community.
"The vision I have is a really casual, interactive environment for families to come in and they feel like it's a home away from home," says Hartwell. "I want it to be family driven."
The new facility was years in the planning, incorporating a number of committees, childcare workers, teachers, Town Council and other community members.
"It basically was a collaborative initiative," says Communities for Kids committee member and Childcare Society treasurer, Lorna Gregson. "We've been working on it about three to four years—the program is basically to support child and family development by providing an opportunity for the parents to acquire knowledge and skills from one another and from childcare professionals."
Mondays and Wednesdays will offer a healthy snack, however, on Thursday, a free lunch will be prepared for those who choose to drop by for a visit.
"I'm just excited that something like this has come to Princeton," says Hartwell, "and, young families now have an opportunity, more so, to get out of the house, than they've had before."
Princeton Family Place is free and is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday and is available all year round.

Ordinary citizens performing extraordinary services
Date: Jan 6, 2010
Entry: The Princeton Extrication Society consists of people within our own community, who have not only dedicated themselves to their families, work or business, but to volunteering to assist or rescue anyone who has met with misfortune on the roadways.
This group is on call, 24 hours a day, seven days a week and average about 85 calls a year. They cover the service area from Manning Park Lodge, throughout Aspen Grove, the back roads of Tulameen, through Hedley and overlap into Keremeos if their help is required.
Princeton Extrication work in conjunction with all emergency services, especially B.C. Ambulance and the R.C.M.P. On the community level itself, the society provides First Aid services for many of the community events held up at the PXA grounds and each Halloween they are on patrol, giving treats to the youngsters and on guard to help keep them safe. This group of ordinary citizens do not believe that they are heroes, they believe they are rescuers and when they're needed—they'll be there.

Stepping Up
Date: Jan 6, 2010
Entry: Princeton is a Town that has been down many times over the past 4 to 5 decades only to rise time and time again. Here we are again in the process of rebuilding our community making it attractive for locals as well as visitors. Building a community that all age groups will take pride in, developing activities for all age groups and their different interests. The thought process being that a happy and active community for all is the best way to a Healthy Lifestyle. Many things can be done with volunteers at very little cost but at some point you need monies to move projects forward. For a small community like Princeton winning the GOLD would go along ways to enabling us to attain that Healthy Lifestyle. As you can see from the response from the citizens of Princeton they are stepping up and shooting for GOLD.

Princeton = Gamestown2010; A NO BRAINER!
Date: Jan 6, 2010
Entry: It is difficult enough for a Town of 2800 to get enough viewers choice votes to make it into the top ten, let alone the fact that Princeton finished first in Community story submissions OVER ALL OTHERS! Not only that but Princeton is one of only two to finish in the top two in ALL THREE CATEGORIES; Healthy Living Pledges, Spirit School Entries, and Community Entries. It's a NO BRAINER! Princeton deserves Gold.

Gentle exercise for mind and body
Date: Jan 6, 2010
Entry: As a senior, I find it very easy to get entertaining exercise in Princeton. One of my favorite places to go is Swan Lake, just outside of town. There, a person can walk the paths, observe wildlife and sit awhile on "Don's" bench and meditate or even sketch or photograph the view. There are also several logging roads in the area, and if you drive up one for just five minutes in nearly any direction, you will be able to find other fabulous places to get out of your vehicle, meander and explore. Take an apple and a container of water and you are set for a few hours of gentle exercise, clean, pure air and peace and contentment. Even if you are a bit out of shape, there still are many opportunities to get fit and healthy again.

Community Volunteers help build JA School Community Garden
Date: Jan 5, 2010
Entry: Community and parents came together to help build the John Allison School Community Garden. The first garden beds were constructed from cinderblocks and filled with soil. It was much quicker to fill the soil using a Bobcat rather than by wheelbarrow. Working together helps to build better communities. Princeton is proud of their volunteers and donators.
