What would GamesTown Mean
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: I can't help but wonder what winning gamesTown would mean to a community. In a larger community with all kinds of top quality amennities, programs and staff, $100,000.00 would definately help to deliver recreation services, but what impact would it really have? However in a smaller community, $100,000.00 could effect every member of our community in some way and literally change lives. Can you imagine the possibilities? I just want to thank the organizers of GamesTown 2010 for this opportunity as it has pulled our community together and allowed us to share our stories with the world.

Our family is hoping for a indoor swimming pool!!!!!

A whole lot of community spirit!!!!!!
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: Two Gamestown stalkers went around the community to find out how supportive the community was behind the efforts for Princeton to be named Gamestown 2010 and we think the video speaks for itself. Bienvenue Princeton! Princeton is number one! Princeton for the Gold! All three of our schools took time out of their day to show their support. The background song is sung by four talented girls from Vermilion Forks and the piano played by one of them. The Grade 8 high school kids ran through the snow (many in runners) to show their support. John Allison Elementary pulled all the kids outside for an hour of snow play. The paramedics, the RCMP, the hardware store, realtors, banks, diners in restaurants - it didn't matter where we went - everyone showed a lot of pride in their hometown and their friends, family and neighbours. We are only sad we couldn't include every single bit of footage we took yesterday. We love our town and we want the win!!!!! We want it bad!!! Go Princeton!!!

Great neighbours make a healthy, happy neighbourhood
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: I live in a beautiful, peaceful area of town; lots of trees, wildlife, not much traffic, close to a corner store and just a short jaunt to the downtown core. What it is that makes the area in which I live the best is my neighbours! All the ones I've met are very nice, but three of them in particular, really stand out. One couple are very active within the community. They volunteer countless hours of their time in enhancing our nature areas as well as being involved in our service clubs. During the holidays, they hosted a neighbourhood gathering, spirits and baked goodies galore! It was a terrific way to socialize with those I knew and get to know those I hadn't met before. The other neighbour of whom I speak, is an outstanding gentleman! During the four years I've been in the neighbourhood, I've witnessed this gentleman perform numerous acts of kindness. During the Spring, Summer and Fall he can be seen watering, raking and mowing numerous lawns, cleaning garbage from our streets and in the Winter, he hauls out his snowblower and clears the walks and driveways. He never asks for payment or anything else in return and to top it all off—this incredible gentleman is in his eighties!

When All Is Said And Done
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: They wanted stories and we gave them 540 tributes to the reason we believe Princeton is living healthy in our lifestyle every day of the year, more than any size of town or city in B.C. They wanted votes and we ended up next to the top. They wanted spirit schools and act now pledges and we ended up in the lead or next to it. This is a community of 2,800 coming together to rank at the top or next to it in every category that was required of us. We are proud of our clean air, clean water, our myriad of outdoor activities and the spirit our volunteers exhibit in providing our youth, seniors and residents with everything they need to live an active and healthy lifestyle. Take the time to read through some of those 540 stories and pictures and you will begin to appreciate why we are so proud of our town. When all is said and done, no matter what takes place we believe Princeton has earned the title of Gamestown 2010.

Entry: Our family lives right in the heart of Princeton and we have a 18 hole disc golf course in our backyard. Currently there is a very small club of 8. 5-Adults 2-Children and 1-Mascot the dog. Future goals would be to have a course in Princeton that would be free for everyone to play. It is one of the cheapest sports to get into. Also building a course can be very inexpensive as well.

Lessons Learned in Coquitlam
Date: Jan 6, 2010
Entry: I learned how to swim and skate in Coquitlam. I also learned how to ride my bike and rollerblade in Coquitlam. In addition to my education (also in Coquitlam), I learned how to stay active and learned which activities I liked to do. I learned how to make friends and get along with people and handle disappointment. Coquitlam’s been a great place for me to make friends and have somewhere to enjoy the activities I learned as a child. With two great indoor swimming pools and a large ice rink and countless trails, Coquitlam’s a terrific place to grow up!

Two Rivers Park
Date: Jan 6, 2010
Entry: Now that the "Bridge of Dreams" construction is complete, the community of Princeton can look forward to the completion of "Two Rivers Park." The park is a joint effort between Princeton Rotary and the Vermilion Trail Society. Princeton Rotary donated funding towards the creation of the park, and with the area being where our two rivers join - hence, it's name. The Town of Princeton acquired Urban Systems to design the park layout, which begins at the bridge on Highway #3 and extends to the "Bridge of Dreams." There has already been many hours of work put into the area and once spring hits—many more hours to come. The park will be a place of beauty in which both who live here and those who visit will appreciate the time they spend in it.

Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional
Date: Jan 6, 2010
Entry: At some point in our lives, every individual suffers from stress, physical or mental. Whether it be related to school, work, family, relationships or otherwise, we all go through it. The key to alleviating stress, is to get treatment and learn how to manage it in our everyday lives. Alternative therapy such as massage, is an incredible way to counteract the effects of stress. Massage is beneficial not only in the general sense of calming the nervous system, creating a balanced, centered effect, it is extremely beneficial to our muscular, skeletal, circulatory, nervous, digestive & excretory and respiratory systems and to our skin. A friend of mine, suffered with chronic illness for years as a child and young adult. While the doctors did what they could for her, they could not ease the constant pain. Frustrated by their daughters condition, her parents sought help through alternative methods. My friends condition was treated with alternative therapies and Chinese Massage. Her health improved tremendously, prompting her to learn more. Personal experience with alternative therapy and techniques gave her the realization of the connection between "body and mind", thus creating the decision for her choice of career. Clientele ranges (myself included) from the youngest being, therapy on a woman to help her conceive, to the eldest being a gentleman of 98 years. Many of her clients have asked that the healing touch be extended to their pets as well. With the popularity of massage ever growing, her services are in demand all over Canada and into the States. Becoming a "Travelling Masseuse", has given her a great balance between life in the city and "Living Country." When asked how she feels about her job, she said simply, "It's my life's purpose", "I'm here to help people."

Money from heaven
Date: Jan 6, 2010
Entry: The British Columbia Ambulance Service which provides services to Princeton and Keremeos received a sizable donation Friday from the South Okanagan Similkameen Medical Foundation. (SOSMF)
Janice Perrino, Executive Director and Ken Jaggard, Chairman of SOSMF were on hand at the ambulance station in Princeton Friday afternoon to give a cheque in the amount of $23,896 to Mayor of Princeton, Randy McLean and Mayor of Keremeos, Walter Despot to allow further training for eight ambulance workers to transport patients more often without requiring a doctor or a nurse to go along. This will allow more staff to remain at the Princeton General Hospital.
Also on hand for the donation was Bill Quinlan, from Ridgewood Lodge, to accept a donation grant in the amount of $32,500, to go towards the purchase of much needed medical equipment that is estimated to cost of about $48,000.
The SOSMF is able to provide these two grants due to an anonymous donor in December and it was designated to be used for any projects in the South Okanagan and Similkameen region.
Janice Perrino, Executive Director of SOSMF, stated, "The decision to support these particular campaigns was an easy one. It is about supporting the citizens in our region in good times and in hard times. We want Princeton to know that we are there to support them in your efforts to provide the best health care available. We feel very honoured to be able to support these important projects."
Ken Jaggard, Chairman of the Medical Foundation, would like to thank the people of Princeton who sent in donations totalling more than $15,000 for their Christmas campaign. Jaggard said, "Each and every donation got us that much closer, it was heart-warming to see the dozens of brochures coming back with their gift enclosed. Our thanks to everyone.
After the donations were given, Mayor Randy McLean stated, "This donation is absolutely amazing, for the South Okanagan Similkameen Medical Foundation to come through with money to upgrade the training for our ambulance attendants is just phenomenal, this money will greatly assist the situation created by the doctor situation so that doctors and nurses will not have to travel with the patient in the ambulance enroute to the hospital. I would like to thank the people of Princeton for their efforts and this donation from the Medical Foundation really reflects the integrity of their organization.

Spelling it the right way
Date: Jan 6, 2010
Entry: Four students from Vermillion Forks Elementary School participated in a lunch hour CanSpell qualifying spelling bee directed by school Principal, Barry Clarke.
Grade seven students, Emily Allison and Clayton Jung joined with grade six students, Daniel Kostiuk and Charlie Allison for a spelling test of thirty words, ten from a grades five to six level and twenty from a grades seven and eight level.
Students from elementary level to grade eight were allowed to enter, but only these four participated in the test to determine who would go on to the district competition, then possibly the Regional spelling competition in Kamloops.
Sharon Jung, from the Skills Center has been involved for three years and says of the program, "This program teaches the kids literacy, and as they enter into adulthood, they are able to spell properly. We have a weekly study session for the kids, where we go over the words with word games and such."
Championship spelling has become an international phenomenon embedded in popular culture over the past three years thanks to major motion pictures and media coverage. It epitomizes society's interest and engagement in fostering academic success.
The CanWest CanSpell program cultivates year round interest with teachers, parents, students and the communities that support them. CanSpell affiliates have the chance to engage the broad and diverse audience that follows this process from the local school level all the way to the international stage.
At Wednesday's session, Daniel Kostiuk proved to be a force to be reckoned with as he took the first place prize with only a few words wrong on his test.

Elk herd grows
Date: Jan 6, 2010
Entry: Princeton Conservation Officer, Al Lay, hopped in a helicopter last week for a flight over the area to count the elk population.
Areas covered were Baldy Mountain, Jura, Friday Creek, Dalby Meadows and Darcy Mountain where the total count came in at 396 animals of which there were 20 to 30 per-cent calves. Among the bulls, there were 12 mature six point bulls as well as three collared female cows. The collars have done their job since the late nineties and have since run out of power and are now obsolete. The data gained from the collars has been beneficial to the Elk Habitat program and has been recorded for future reference. At the beginning of the program, the count for that time was one bull and seven calves with a total count of 119 animals.
"In the ten years since the inception of the Habitat for Elk Program, " states Lay, "There has been a substantial increase in the elk herds in the area. The total count has increased by 30 per-cent in that ten year period."
As well as the elk count, 430 mule deer were seen of which 24 per-cent were fawns. Twelve moose were counted with a variety of cows and calves.
Al Lay would like to point out that the population of elk in the Dalby meadows and Friday Creek areas are close to the highway and he would like motorists to keep and eye out for animals on the road.
The elk trap that was built ten years ago for the Habitat program is no longer in use and has been dismantled.
"Princeton and District should be very proud," added Lay, The Elk Habitat Program worked and the elk population in the area is prospering."
