local pride
Date: Mar 26, 2009
Entry: A long-empty restaurant in the middle of town was purchased by the city to house the new library. Funding for the renovation was not immediately forthcoming, but rather than leave this rotten tooth in the smile of Princeton a group of enthusiasts set to work. Crews of workers cleaned up the dining area, painted the walls and established a gallery for local artists to display their work. Now residents and visitors alike can see the work of the many talented and varied artists based in the area. Supportive volunteers maintain the premises and organize Openings which are welcomed by all attendees.
Princeton has long had a vibrant sporting image but now there is an opportunity to showcase the well-rounded personality of the town.

Longhouse: A Community That Gives
Date: Mar 25, 2009
Entry: Princeton cross-country skiers had a dream to get more residents active and introduce a greater number of Princeton youth to the sport. To do this a facility was needed. Building a facility costs a lot of money. Money a small volunteer organization does not have. What the organization did have was a lot of enthusiasm and phenomenal community support. When the local club, the China Ridge Cross Country Ski Association, approached the community and local businesses they received overwhelming support. Because of this support the club was able to apply for and receive matching funds from the Province of BC to build a wonderful facility housing grooming and ski equipment for use by the community. Best of all, the club’s goal of getting more community members up to the hill has been realized. The 2008/09 cross-country ski season was great.

exchange students
Date: Mar 24, 2009
Entry: The International Rotary Exchange program provides opportunities for the exchange of students between Canada and foreign Countries. Princeton Rotary Club has been sponsoring these exchanges for more than 25 years. The four students hosted by my family have been from Germany, Finland, Spain and most recently, Mexico. World peace and understanding are the primary benefits of the program as once these students have lived in a foreign country for a year and interacted with people similar in age they understand they are all alike. The students then become ambassadors for World peace and understanding at home.
As well, they become a very important member of the host families!

Living in Princeton!!!
Date: Mar 21, 2009
Entry: Living in Princeton was a quite unique experience because Princeton had a charming, collaborate and beautiful people. I had wonderful time there because I saw the town is involved to all the town´s activities such as cleaning up the town sponsored by the R.C.M.P., Rotary´s Parade, Plane´s show, Musical Festival and more….
I’m happy because Princeton has so many volunteer organizations such as Rotary Club, Vermilion Trails Society, Chamber of Commerce, Lion Club, Princeton Secondary School, and R.C.M.P.
In Princeton you can experience across country sky, climbing, skiing, bicycling, running and all that; and have a beautiful perspective and vista from the mountains, the river and the rails.
I invite to all the people to come to Princeton and see that is exceptional and special town.
From Mexico with all my love

Weyerhaeuser Roundhouse
Date: Mar 20, 2009
Entry: The Vermilion Trail Society, a Volunteer organization, who are stewards of the Trans Canada Trail had an idea, but needed funding. They approached the largest employer and number one industry in Princeton, Weyerhaeuser Canada, for help. Weyerhaeuser generously donated the funds to construct the Roundhouse which sits in a historic location. It was built on the site of the joining of the Great Northern Railway and the Kettle Valley Railway. The Weyerhaeuser Roundhouse is right beside Hwy #3, so was the perfect location for picinic tables and the placement of educationally historic commemorative signs about Princeton. The community volunteers have created a wonderful addition for the public to use as an enjoyable pause in their travels.

Recycling Before it was "In"
Date: Mar 20, 2009
Entry: M and J have been an integral art of our community for a long time. Not just because J is a doctor, but because of their huge sense of social responsibility to the planet. M and some other community members got busy back in the 1970's, long before recycling was cool, and formulated the Princeton Recycling Society. J and M began hauling the collected recycling to the recycling depots in their Volkswagen van to Vernon and Vancouver. It was a time-consuming task, but one they took very seriously. Finally, the town took the reins and with some diligent volunteerism from people like them and MB, the recycling business became a town issue. They opened up a recycle center at the local landfill site.
M was, also, one of the founding members (1974) in a province-wide plan to get liquor and wine bottles accepted into the deposit system. The group tried to get milk jugs included as well, but they were never approved.
They own home was built to specs many today still don't meet. It has many features to make it an energy efficient design including solar panels, double insulated walls, solar hot water heating, an efficient wood furnace, a unique hot air return system, energy efficient lighting, a sun room with a warming rock pit and a home faced to receive the most solar gain.
Jand his wife have made a decision to make a difference and are doing so every day. They, also, realize that recycling is not the best answer, but part of the growing mantra to reduce, reuse and recycle. "My philosophy for living my life focusses on being a conserver, not a consumer. It is not free to recycle. We need to reduce and reuse before we recycle," stressed M. Princeton can be proud to hail them as one of their own.

Rags to Riches
Date: Mar 20, 2009
Entry: Princeton, like many communities, was faced with a school closure in 2003. The community was devastated. The building sat empty for a couple of years as a constant reminder of a scare that wouldn't go away. In 2005 a group of concerned citizens and politicians started to dream about how we could take a negative and turn it into a positive. Under the leadership of the Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen and the School District #58, community public consultation meetings were held to assess the soccial wellbeing of our community and determine how we could use the abandoned school to improve ourselves. The "Princeton and District Wellness Centre" project was born. We applied for and received an "Olympic Live Sites" grant, and leveraged that with a "Community School Connections" grant and a "Princeton Community Forest" grant. Minister Rick Thorpe was on hand to kick start the project in Feb. of 2007 and today we have a 275 seat "Multi Media Performing Arts" Theatre with an Arts and Cultural centre attached. This abandon school building has become one of our foundational pieces to the health and wellbeing of our community. A place where friends share their passion and knowledge with one another and neighbours can gather together and be proud of our abilities and accomplishments.

Remembering
Date: Mar 19, 2009
Entry: Princeton had something very unique. In 1932, Grandfather to Dave of the Crazy Canucks ski team, "Pop" Bert, helped create the Amber Ski hill in Princeton. The hill became World Class and held the Western Canadian Ski Championships. Bert's sons went on to the Olympics, but many other superb skiers, also, competed in major competions. Some of the skiers were so good they were recruited by the Canadian Army during WWII to train Scottish troops the fine art of skiing in and around Banff and the Columbia Ice Fields, so they could use their new talents to fight in some of Europe's mountaineous regions during the war. This past Remembrance Day they were honoured by the locals for their talents as athletes, for their courage and for their contribution to the war effort.

Stuffies for Goats
Date: Mar 19, 2009
Entry: The students and staff at John Allison Elementary School did something extraordinary in February. The students turned in their stuffed animals for a sale to raise money for a poor family in a Third World country. The organizer and teacher was hoping to raise enough to buy one goat. Through the generousity of those who donated and those who purchased the stuffies the school exceeded their goal. They raised enough money to buy 2 goats, a hen and a rooster and some seed for the family. John Allison School has been working hard to get the students to become socially responsible community members and by the looks of it they are definitely on the right track.

Turning Struggle Into Triumph
Date: Mar 19, 2009
Entry: LJL was diagnosed with a rare brain stem cancer called Glioma. For years the family have been struggling to keep their daughter's cancer at bay. The families made a promise to help raise funding for the Neurosurgery department at Children's Hospital in Vancouver as they spent hour after hour there receiving care from a caring dedicated staff. Finally, the family was able to pull off an extremely successful golf tournament fundraiser in honour of their daughter. The community piled the tables high with fundraising gifts and friends and family turned out in big numbers to help. There were a lot of tears and laughs, but the day went off without a hitch.
