Security and love in the stitches
Date: Apr 8, 2009
Entry: The Bunchgrass Quilters are more than just a crafty group that get together once a week. They started a program to help kids in trouble a couple of years ago and the program has flourished. The quilters have donated over 200 quilts to children through the Victim Services Program and Safe Homes Program. The quilts are made with love out of donated material, scraps and such and each one is as unique as the child who gets it. Children involved in vehicle accidents, from homes with domestic violence and just about any other traumatic situation one can think of are given a quilt that is theirs to keep. They tell them people care, that they are loved and that people will help them be safe. The Bunchgrass Quilters have big hearts and are making a positive difference to kids that need it most.

Learning to Swim
Date: Apr 7, 2009
Entry: Many elementary school students from both John Allison Elementary and Vermilion Forks School were given the opportunity to participate in swimming lessons @ Princeton's outdoor swimming pool near the end of the school year. The temperatures were low this past spring, but the kids didn't seem to mind too much. The "Learn To Swim" program focusses on water safety, swimming skills and overall physical fitness. The program is Red Cross Certified. "Since the program has been introduced the swimming strength and skill level of all the kids has improved overall to a very noticeable degree," said Pool Manager and Head Lifeguard. "The kids learn a lot of valuable information while they are here. It is knowledge they can take with them and practice anywhere there is water." The program has become very successful and both the schools and swimming pool have every intention of continuing it for years to come.

Olympic dreams
Date: Apr 3, 2009
Entry: Members of the Princeton Kokanee Swim Club were in for a special treat when Canadian Olympic swimmer Kelly Stefanshyn gave a talk to the group thanks to the local Rotary Club. Stefanshyn told the young swimmers about her first time watching a swim meet and how it instantly altered her life. She spoke of her single-minded determination - determination of a great athlete that went after her goal. Stefanshyn motivated the swimmers to follow their own dreams and to reach for the stars. The broken records and medals were just a small part of Kelly's odessey. Her message was inspirational as she quoted one of her coaches, "No one said it was going to be easy, only that it would be worth it." Stefanshyn put the swim club through a few drills and left them excited and wanting to be their best.

Coalmont to Princeton Run
Date: Apr 1, 2009
Entry: The 9th Annual Coalmont to Princeton 18.5 km run is not for everybody, but many locals and out-of-towners spend weeks beforehand gearing up for the big day. Not quite the length of a half marathon, the course, however, is very challenging and beautiful. The course winds through the mountains with the Tulameen River far below in spots. Much of the course is parallel to the old Kettle Valley Rail Line. From valleys and ravines to cliffs and hills the route challenges all its athletes. It is partly due to the beauty of the course that it has gained much of its popularity. The spring run is part of the Interior Road Race series and ends with a pancake breakfast and awards. Every year the run gets better thanks to all the sponsors and wonderful volunteers who lend a helping hand.

Spirit Square
Date: Apr 1, 2009
Entry: In an exciting plan to revitalize downtown Princeton the community got busy. After much forethought and planning, it was decided that a permanent place was needed in the downtown core for people to gather. The concept of the Spirit Square was born. With a central performance area, more greenery, lighting, underground sprinklers, public washrooms and the existing memorial Cenotaph the new expansion will be a wonderful addition to a very active community. Crews have been working hard to complete the square and is a least half way there. Rick Thope, Minister for Small Business and Revenue presented the town with a cheque for $200,000 from the Province of B.C. Spirit Squares program. This along with other much needed grant monies has made the concept a reality. The square will be completed in 2009 and ready for the 150th birthday celebration of Princeton in 2010.

Biathlon Finale
Date: Apr 1, 2009
Entry: Bikes and runners were shined up early out front of the John Allison Elementary School in anticipation of the Grade 3 classes mini-biathlon. They had been training hard under the healthy influence of their coach. The kids had been giving up part of their Monday, Wednesday and Friday lunch hours to get in shape for the big day. The students biked for about four kilometers, then, took off on foot for a two kilometer run. After a lunch break the students mounted their bikes again and returned on the same route they had came back to their school. The athletes arrived with rosy complexions, smiles and dirt on their faces. The damp weather had not dampened the spirits of the kids, however. They were happy and very proud of themselves. One boy smiling and dirty from head to toe said his favorite part was "the mud and the dirt." The Coach said to the group, "You should all be proud of yourselves and use this as an example of what you can do if you put your minds to it."

Heritage trails
Date: Mar 31, 2009
Entry: The community of Princeton formulated a BC 150 committee to come up with a plan to celebrate BC's birthday. KC worked in conjunction with the Ministry of Tourism, Sport and the Arts to develop a pet project called "Treasures of the Tulameen." The projects goal was to highlight nine treasures in the Tulameen River valley. They included 3 BC recreation campsites, 2 waterfalls and 2 sections of heritage trail. Many historical trails have been re-located, re-blazed and re-opened as a result. The trails underwent extensive clearing and snag-falling to make them safe and passable. These heritage trails were the main overland commerce routes connecting the interior of our province with the coast. It has been a very exciting process for everyone involved to see these historical paths once again in such a wonderfully useable state. Signs have been erected, campsite improvements made and pamphlets designed and printed. Over 25 kilometers of the original Hudson Bay Trail has been re-opened.
The community is working together to continue protecting and preserving the trails while opening them to the public for healthy recreation.

Bras for money
Date: Mar 31, 2009
Entry: Team "Breast Friends" needs to raise $2000 each to participate in the annual "Weekend to End Breast Cancer." Each year they challenge members of the community to design a bra to sell @ their annual Bra Auction. The event usually sells out and The Copper Mountain Bar and Grill, where it is held, donates the appetizers in partnership with wholesaler Sysco Foods. One member of "Team Breast Friends" conspired with the Penticton Hospital's Mammogram Department to organize a Bra Auction at the Laughing Parrot. The old mammogram machine was breaking down and since that is where most of the Princeton women with breast concerns are sent along with women throughout the Okanagan it was vital it was replaced. The auction raised over $10,000 and took the Mammogram department past their fundraising goal. The new machine is now in use. With people like "Team Breast Friends" helping to find a cure and make the best early detection equipment available to everyone who needs it, Princeton is very proud of this dedicated group.

A Person of National Historical Significance
Date: Mar 31, 2009
Entry: Susan was born in 1845 in Colombo Ceylon (Sri Lanka). Her family moved first to England, then, Scotland, then, British Columbia, Canada. Susan and her family settled in Hope, until, Susan's marriage to John. John and Susan settled in Princeton. They had fourteen children. They were the first white settlers and with, only, the Native Indian population in bountiful numbers, Susan learned how to communicate with them. She was intrigued by their culture and began documenting their stories and recording details of their customs and daily living. Susan wrote a series of articles for the Princeton Star on the early history of Princeton and published several articles in the Okanagan Historical Society Reports on Native Legends. At the age of 85, her recollections appeared in thirteen issues of the Vancouver Sun. The exceptional literary quality and unique voice brought a great deal of attention to Susan. Pieces of Susan's literary accomplishments have been published and republished over the years and reputed to be the only reliable account of the life of a pioneer woman in British Columbia. Most notably significant is the book "A Pioneer Gentlewoman in British Columbia-The Recollections of Susan Allison" edited by Margaret Ormsby. The Minister of Environment, Honourable John Baird, has designated Susan Louisa Allison Moir Allison in conjunction with Parks Canada and the Historical Sites and Monuments Board of Canada "A person of National historical significance." Allison joins ranks with Emily Carr, Laura Secord, Pauline Johnson, the Famous Five, Lucy Maude Montgomery and many other incredible Canadian woman who have been given this honour. A formal commemoration ceremony to reveal Allison's designation will take place in 2010 in conjunction with Princeton's 150th birthday celebration. A plaque is being designed in her honour and will be given to Princeton to celebrate its rich history and first white settler.

Spring Clean-Up and Green-Up
Date: Mar 31, 2009
Entry: Approximately 75 members of the community got up and out the door for the first annual Spring Clean-Up and Green-Up. Members of the local RCMP, the ATV Club, the 4-H Club, Citizens on Patrol, business owners, parents, kids and residents stood in front of the Princeton Arena waiting to receive their garbage bags and gloves to pick up trash. Bags and bags of discarded trash were filled and hauled to the local landfill, including mufflers, a toboggan, a bathtub and a bountiful of other "interesting items." Organizer, Constable ML, said of the event, "age didn't seem to stop those that could come...from three to eighty-two." It was a huge undertaking and many laughs were had along the way - proving that anything can be fun if you put your mind to it.

Entry: Sledding in and around the Princeton area is second to none. The snow is light and dry and the area offeres miles and miles of trails and mountain sites. Sledding with family and friends is what it is all about for me. There is nothing better than a hot tea, on a sunny mountain top with all your friends. Princeton has the Trans Canada Trail going right through town. It has become a tradition for my family to jump on the sleds and ride into town and pick up a coffee at the drive through. Upgrading the Kettle Valley Railway Trail
Date: Mar 27, 2009
Entry: With funding scraped together from Tourism B.C.,Community Futures and others, an extensive upgrade of the old railway bed and bridges has provided an adventure of a lifetime for cyclists and hikers. Enthusiasts can start in Princeton and travel east to Summerland , or go west through Tulameen to Brookmere. It is a great adventure for enjoying and experiencing the natural environment , with the added bonus of railway and ranching history. The funding was a seed that fed a flurry of activity of Princeton volunteers from the Vermilion Trail Society and a local contractor who performed above and beyond his contract work. The work by these dedicated volunteers continues with annual trail maintenance.
Thanks goes to all the volunteers for all their hard work.
Submtted via email from Australia. Good luck to all.
