Spirit Square built with Community Spirit
Date: Jun 29, 2009
Entry: Princeton was the lucky recipient of a Spirit Square Grant. Months of community input through public meetings led to a fantastic design. As bids came in, the community realized one thing. Local contractors could get the job done for less. With high quality workmanship and community pride, the local contractors got bits and pieces of the job. The community has kept almost all the work in Princeton and it is nearing completion. One thing an out-of-town contractor doesn't have is a stake in the outcome. Local pride has made every contractor give a little bit extra to meet deadlines. Now the project is nearing completion. Good job Princeton.

Nancy Greene-Raine visits town
Date: Jun 18, 2009
Entry: It is not often that Princeton is visited by an Olympic legend like the now Senator Nancy Greene-Raine, but like everything else in our little community we take it in stride and do our very best to give everyone who comes a warm welcome. Gold and silver medalist in Grenoble, France and now BC's Senator, Nancy Greene-Raine was just the person to bring some very good news to our community as BC's forest industry struggles with a down-turned economy and long unchecked Mountain Pine Beetle infestation. Senator Greene-Raine brought with her a cheque for $450,00 to help Princeton diversify the local economy. The news brought smiles to a Town Council who has been working diligently to finish their Industrial Park to bring socially and environmentally responsible companies into a struggling community. They now have the financial means to complete the necessary infrastructure on the first 20 lots.

Scooting through town
Date: Jun 8, 2009
Entry: E decided it was time for Princeton to green up the town and with the soaring price of gas thought that the green he calls money might be just the incentive residents needed. Muckle sells Motorino electric scooters that will go up to 100 km between charges. They have been getting a lot of local attention and are a sweet looking ride. With a price of just over $2000 for one of the best in the line-up, this Italian made bike is doing more than turning heads, it is making Princeton a little bit cleaner and greener.

United we stand or wheel
Date: May 26, 2009
Entry: The Princeton Accessibility Awareness Committee has been working hard to help ensure that handicapped persons have access to the same places able-bodied residents have. Recently, locals held a rally to have our only highway pedestrian crossing made wheelchair accessible. The rally worked and the crossing has been fixed, so all of our locals can reach the walk button proving that a united community can solve many of their problems just by working together.

Princeton Fire Department Always There to Help
Date: May 26, 2009
Entry: Every year our volunteer fire department takes time out of their busy lives to offer the community a valuable service. They come to talk to the elementary school students about fire prevention. Not only is it a learning experience for the kids, but they get to do some pretty cool stuff like spray water from the massive fire hoses and turn on the siren. The students learn some important information and get to know some of our local heroes. It is a win win for everyone involved.

Girls rule
Date: May 26, 2009
Entry: She was disappointed when her local hockey team seemed to be falling apart. With nowhere local to play, she did not quit. Herlove of hockey had her looking for a new place to play. After being accepted into the Pursuit of Excellence Hockey Academy in Kelowna, she worked hard throughout the year to prove she belonged. Recently, her team played at Planet Ice in Langley B.C. for the coveted Challenge Cup and won it all for their division. Her team were beaming. She proves that dreams do come true and that dedication has its pay-off. Princeton is proud of this local!

Mr. O
Date: May 26, 2009
Entry: Part of the beauty of living in a small town is the wildlife. Princeton is no exception. Most residents in and around our community love their daily interaction with the many animals and birds that live here. When Mr.O, a Great Horn Owl, was found malnourished and near death in a local resident's backyard, it was no surprise to those of us who live here to hear that Mr. O was brought into GL's home as she tried to save him. After feeding the owl overnight, GL called SORCO (South Okanagan Rehabilitation Center for Owls) to assist Mr. O. Mr. F took Mr. O to Oliver and brought the sick owl back from near death. Mr. O was released back into nature, May 21st, at the site where he was found, much to the pleasure of locals, to begin a new journey.

Balding for Dollars
Date: May 13, 2009
Entry: It is next to impossible to find someone who doesn't know someone who has been affected by cancer. As more and more kids are made aware of the disease, they are coming up with their own solutions to help. Some of the students at Vermilion School took matters into their own hands and started collecting money for a fundraiser. Two girls and two boys gave up their hair for cancer. The boys shaved their heads and the girls had their ponytails chopped off to make wigs for cancer patients. All in all, the four brave souls managed to raise around a thousand dollars to help find a cure for cancer.

Learning to Save Lives
Date: May 13, 2009
Entry: Princeton Secondary School has embraced the National ACT (Advanced Coronary Treatment) CPR program offered to them this year. The program teaches teachers to teach their students life saving skills. The ACT High School Program looks for community partners to help with the purchase of practice mannequins. The Interior Savings Credit Union stepped forth with the needed funds. In February, the teachers were trained by a certified instructor and now they have just finished teaching their first set of students. "It is empowering to the students to have these skills," said certified instructor and P.E. teacher. "The students feel confident that they could use CCPR if they needed to." CPR in the first few minutes of a victim's treatment is critical to their survival. It can mean the difference between life and death or whether or not the victim sustains permanent brain damage. 19 local students were certified and staff plan to have all their Grade 10s certified by the end of the school year.

Spring basketball
Date: May 13, 2009
Entry: The Princeton basketball program has taken on new life in recent years. Starting at the high school level, new coaching volunteers and helpers have made a huge difference there. Now those same ambitious people have taken their love of the sport one step further. They have turned to the Grade 4-7 students at John Allison Elementary and are teaching them the skills they need to play some wicked basketball at an early age. These volunteers have brought more volunteers out of the woodwork. The Spring League is following Canadian born basketball legend Steve Nash's basketball guide book with great results.

Laughter is the best medicine
Date: May 13, 2009
Entry: Time and again we hear that laughter is the best medicine and Princeton's own Performing Arts Society have been working together to keep us all healthy. Since their formation a new theatre has been built out of an abandoned school gymnasium using Spirit of 2010 grant money, they have produced several high calibre plays and a youth theatre group has joined the fun. So far, the productions that the theatre club have done have been incredible. The audience forgets they are watching a theatre group in its infancy. They are really that good. Laughter and entertainment go hand in hand with living a healthy lifestyle and Princeton has no shortage of either.

Kicking Butt and Taking Names
Date: Apr 24, 2009
Entry: Princeton has an avid bunch of runners who can be frequently seen running over the hills and through the valleys of our beautiful countryside. Six residents of Princeton decided to make the trek to Kelowna for their Midsummer 8 km Run. They showed the rest of BC not only that they showed up to run, but that they showed up to do their very best. They had all trained in their own way at their own pace to prepare for the big day. Well, the training worked. Three came home with medals: 2nd in the Female 65-69 category, 1st in the 65-69 category and second in the 60-64 category. These runners prove that age is a state of mind. Healthy is as healthy does.

Badlands Basketball Camp
Date: Apr 20, 2009
Entry: Princeton has a strong basketball program and it is in part due to some of the extra steps some basketball enthusiasts take to give youth a step up. One ex-resident of our community who keeps coming back to visit decided to bring his basketball skills back with him too. Jesse has put together a top-notch basketball camp and dragged some of his college teammates back with him to make the program successful. The Badlands Basketball Camp is entering its third year and brings with it a lot of eager youth. Work ethic and skills are blended together to make basketball fun, educational and just plain old good exercise.

Junior Ski Program Resurrected
Date: Apr 20, 2009
Entry: The China Ridge Cross-Country Ski Association has become a wonderful example of the power of desire. They have completely overhauled their club from a cocoon of possibilities into a beautiful butterfly with open wings. In a short period of time, they have accomplished greatness. Their latest project was to start a Junior Ski Program. They applied for an received a 2010 Legacies Now grant to purchase equipment. Then, the club did some networking and was able to find some new and slightly used equipment to purchase at cut rate prices. The group got enough ski equipment to sign up 18 skiers into their 4 week program. Now more kids are getting out on the trails and into the beautiful clean air of Princeton.

Our Iron Women
Date: Apr 13, 2009
Entry: For the past ten years local golfer, EH, has been golfing in the Twin Lakes Annual Iron Woman one day tournament. The tournament is held in celebration of the Ironman Triathlon in Penticton. This year her team of four was a winning combination. EH recruited Princetonite WM and two ex-locals to compete with her in the event. "The course was set-up mean," said pro-shop assistant. "It was a very tough tournament to win...impossible to putt."
EH agreed. "The tee off was from as far back as possible and all the pins were on slopes where if you weren't accurate, you just slid right off the green."
The tournament is a very prestigious competition to win and Princeton was happy to hear of the local victory. Ten years is a long time to wait, but proves persistence pays off.

Healthy harvest
Date: Apr 11, 2009
Entry: For some people the thought of genetically altered foods, foods sprayed with pesticides and foods from foreign lands @ the expense of the Canadian economy has awakened their senses and shot them into action. Princeton's local Healthy Harvest program was at one time subsidized by the Federal government, but that funding is long gone. That has not stopped a group of locals whose concern for the Canadian economy and the health of Canadians has made them resurrect the program. With the help of volunteers, donated space @ the Royal Canadian Legion Hall and private funding, Princeton has a Healthy Harvest program in place again. The group gets most of their produce and fruit from within a 100 miles. What they can't get from the Okanagan/Similkameen Valley area, they are getting from the Fraser Valley. Staying healthy and promoting local farmers are their main goals, but they, also, care about the environment in other ways. Local produce means less greenhouse gas. The transportation costs are kept down. Caring about what goes into the mouths of local families keeps this group hunting for funding and good foods.
