A Rich History
Date: Aug 19, 2009
Entry: We are a community rich in history. Specifically, a history in mining. Back in 1884 ore was discovered in the area and, as a result, mining was begun. In the years leading up to 1996 copper prices rose and fell and the mine was sold, rebought, sold, re-named and eventually closed. But! It's a new time. And 2011 is our year for renewal. Our copper mine is starting up once again - a huge boost for Princeton's folks and economy. Watch us grow!!!

Arena Goes Green
Date: Aug 19, 2009
Entry: With antiquated transformers and maxed-out electrical the Princeton Arena was in dire need of some updates. The Town Council decided updates were not good enough and unanimously voted to replace the old system with new energy efficient electrical equipment inside and out. The energy savings should be about 30% instantly and while the replacement costs were much higher Power Smart grants and Gas Tax Credit money are off-setting the price and making Princeton a greener place to live. Their decision came just in time. Friday afternoon one of the transformers did fail, but with the equipment in the final stages of hook-up, it was an easy job for Fortis to finish. The ice is now in and the new equipment is keeping the ice cold and the arena running smoother than ever.

Rotary lends helping hand
Date: Aug 18, 2009
Entry: After the Princeton Rotary Club invited John Allison School Community Garden Club to give a presentation at one of their weekly luncheons, JASCGC Treasurer gave the Rotarians a passionate summary of the volunteers that built a garden through hard work. The club's positive efforts to bring a community together and teach the young Kindergarten to Grade 3 students by doing touched the Rotarians. By the end of her presentation they too believed the community garden was a project worth supporting. She and local building supply owner, were the first to step forward giving the club all the materials for their garden shed free of charge. Then, the Rotary club presented her with a cheque in the amount of $1500 to use as the JASCGC committee decides. The funding will help with one of the many projects on the community garden clubs wish list.

Fighting weeds with nature
Date: Aug 18, 2009
Entry: Like all communities weeds are a problem. Town workers are continually fighting them. Rural land owners are continually fighting them and many government industries are also fighting the fight. Invasive weeds have been the subject of much discussion over the years. Chemical warfare on plants used to be the norm, but as communities are becoming more aware of the negative effects pesticides have on birds and animals they are looking for more environmentally friendly alternatives. The Regional District's Invasive Weed Coordinator, has been instrumental in helping Princeton residents with these alternatives. Last year she received permission from a landowner, to start a pilot beetle propagation project on his 145 acre meadow. The site is hoping to yield a large quantity of predator beetles to annihilate the Houndstongue weed from around Princeton. This invasive weed has small burrs that are easily transferred onto animals and clothing. Our Regional Director, is working with the Invasive Weed Coordinator to expand community involvement in these green weed fighting alternatives. He is hopeful that a unified program with utility companies, government Ministries, rural landowners and the Town of Princeton will help eradicate some of the weeds that are taking over land masses. It is an initiative well worth the effort and one that is getting a lot of community support.

In memory
Date: Aug 17, 2009
Entry: No one expects a healthy young man to die without warning. When it happens, shock waves are sent through a community. Such was the case when a young man passed away suddenly more than a decade ago. He was a well liked athlete. His family called him a gym rat. He was often seen with a basketball in his hands. His friends did not want him to be forgotten. They raised over $12,000 to start up a Memorial Basketball Camp in his honour. This year was the 12th year the free of charge basketball camp has been running in the community. Most of the original money is still in the account and the Town of Princeton hopes to continue the basketball camp for many more years to come.

Date: Aug 8, 2009
Entry: Princeton's filmmakers, Red Rock Production, presented their movie,"Community Heroes-From the Front Lines" to the public in June 2009. The movie described the effectiveness of the other community agencies that support the Cindy Parolin Safe Homes Program. This program was developed to assist women in abusive relations in remote rural areas. It is our hope that other rural communities would use this information to support their existing programs or to adopt the Princeton model.
Fifty people from our community contributed to the making of this movie. Thank you to everybody!
