Cows say moo!
Date: Sep 3, 2009
Entry: Princeton has always been a feisty community full of good ideas and people not afraid to make them more than an idea. Local owners of the Copper Mountain Ranch. When they realized the Junior Hereford Bonanza was due back in B.C. in 2009 for its once in seven years visit, they decided to have it on their ranch. It would be the first time the Bonanza was held on a ranch A lot of planning and hard work went into the event and Princeton was proud to host the first ever "Herefords on the Ranch" Bonanza this year.

44 years strong!
Date: Sep 2, 2009
Entry: The Princeton and District Fall Fair has been going strong for 44 years. It has had its ups and downs, but always volunteers come together to make it a weekend to remember. The 4-H club and many of the local farmers and ranchers bring in everything from horses, cows, sheep and llamas to bunnies and chicken. The fair showcases locally grown produce, flower displays, talented quilters and painters, photography, arts and crafts and so much more. It takes all weekend to see everything and visit all the vendors. The entertainment features some upcoming local stars and some other B.C. talents. There are prizes and draws and contests galore. It is a great tradition of family fun for the community.

They've got skills!
Date: Aug 28, 2009
Entry: Every year some of the Princeton Secondary School students head to the Regional Junior Skills competition in Kamloops. The winner of the competition moved onto the Provincials at the Abbotsford Tradex Center. He and another student represented Mechanical CAD,
Other students represented Architectural CAD, TV and video production, welding, cabinet making, and culinary arts. Prizes among students included a bronze medal, a gold medal.
The students should be proud of their efforts and proud of their willingness to compete doing something they like doing. The skills learned at home and school can be taken out of the front doors of the high school and into the real world.

A book on renovation
Date: Aug 27, 2009
Entry: For years the Princeton library has been struggling to operate in a small space. Finally, after years of searching for the money, the community has pulled it all together. The town purchased an old restaurant and is in the process of gutting it to make way for their new much larger library. The community is proud and knows that part of healthy living is literacy. As B.C. struggles to keep its promise to become the most literate place on Earth in a down-turning economy, Princeton contributes in its own way to that solution with promises to the community that it is determined to keep. The new space is directly across from the town's new Spirit Square, so readers can read in a green space right outside the front doors of the library.

Keeping it Clean in the Similkameen
Date: Aug 27, 2009
Entry: After seeing too much litter out in the middle of the backcountry wilderness, one resident asked "Why can't they take it out with them? They brought it in...why can't they take it out?" One thing led to another and as he began looking into getting someone to care about the illegal dump sites and help with the problem, he came up with an idea. Why not have an anti-littering campaign? Soon a contest was under way with the support of the Regional District Director, and the Chamber of Commerce. A writer who was born and raised in Princeton and still loves the area, entered the contest with his slogan, " Keeping it Clean in the Similkameen." Ten signs will be made with the slogan on and the community who embraced the idea hopes it is a good start to making people care.

Entry: Princeton has an excellent cross country skiing facility. Some of us seniors (70 and up) have hung up the cross country skis and donned snow shoes (using ski poles also) to do the cross country ski trails. Princeton's beautiful winters (white, white snow, gorgeous blue skies, glorious sunshine) can't be beat. Motivation for folks our age to continue to get out and enjoy keeping fit.

Princeton Girl rides to the Podium
Date: Aug 26, 2009
Entry: Growing up, one local rider considered Princeton to be her horse playground. She first sat up on a horse at the age of nine and thereafter was hard to get off a horse. She was born and raised in Princeton and moved around the last many years figuring out a way to make horses her career. After years marketing horses for breeders and training horses for other competitors to ride, she had put herself in a good enough financial position and received enough respect in the horse world to do some competing of her own. As a mother to an eight year old, she decided her daughter needed some permanent roots, so brought her back to her favourite place in the world, Princeton. "I loved growing up here, and I want [my daughter] to experience all the things I was able to experience." The move has grounded her. "I feel centered here. I feel more confident. Life is in a good spot." She has proved she made the right move with her horsemanship at the international level. Four Canadians competed in the Kentucky Cup CRI 4 against the best in the world. She was the only woman who qualified to compete in Lexington. She proved that small town girls can ride all the way to the podium, riding away with a silver medal finish. She is hoping to qualify for the World Championships next year and hoping that the FEI (Federation of Equestrian International) will consider bringing Reining into the Olympic Summer Games. They presently support many of Equestrian Olympic events. Reining would be the first of Western disciple. "It would be amazing."

Monster under the bed
Date: Aug 25, 2009
Entry: Part of living your best life is enjoying life, taking full advantage of the opportunities available to you, finding interests you love and following your interests to new places. Princeton has a Junior Drama club group run by a volunteer teacher. He and his enthusiastic students put on two plays so far - Monsters Under the Bed and The Prince Who wouldn't Talk. They made a special over sized ticket to present to the Mayor at the Town Council meeting. The plays were a success and it was nice to see Princeton youth exploring a new activity with such enthusiasm.

Rescuing horses
Date: Aug 24, 2009
Entry: Outback Jack's is a horse rescue center that has saved over 30 horses from a life of suffering. The horses come from a variety of situations and are put into the hands of one woman to nurse back to health. The horses take a long time to bring back to good health sometimes and she doesn't offer them up for adoption until a year has gone by usually. She needs to visit the home of the potential adoptive family and get a good feel for the horses safety before the horses leave their Safe Home. Just like an abused person time and tenderness are the only way they heal. Princeton is proud the family is one of theirs and know who to call if they see a horse in distress.

Little hands of remembrance
Date: Aug 24, 2009
Entry: Every child traced an outline of their hand onto construction paper and cut it out to make a special Remembrance Day wreath. The students each made a poppy that said simply 'thank-you." The hands were attached together on a large circle to form the wreath. The handmade wreath was presented to the Legion at the school's Remembrance Day assembly. In gratitude of the wreath, the Legion presented the school with a Certificate of Appreciation. "It was a really nice thing that they did said one Legion member. Golden Sneaker Award
Date: Aug 24, 2009
Entry: Princeton Secondary School is always looking for ways to promote living your best life. One way the staff has found to encourage students into doing this is by honouring students who care through the Golden Sneaker Award. The only way to receive it is by nomination. Students are nominated for their efforts to be a good person. They are nominated for being a good example to other students, a good role model, a leader, a helper and just a good person. The Golden Sneaker Award is given out monthly throughout the school year and has highlighted students for recycling efforts, assistance to a teacher, good attitude, and much more. The staff and students have come to expect more from themselves and each other.

Claim Jumping in Princeton
Date: Aug 22, 2009
Entry: -Although not as popular a sport as in the old days, claim jumping is still one of the sports available in Princeton. Never successfully accepted as an olympic sport, many in rural communities believe it should be. The sport suffered another blow in Princeton when Mitsubishi Materials Corporation from Japan entered into a financial agreement with Copper Mountain Mining to move closer to the reopening of copper mining in Princeton. Although there are numerous possibilities yet available, this removed a whole host of properties that would have been available for potential jumping. Don't be discouraged though, come and explore our vast open areas with numerous mineral properties and perhaps you can set a new claim jumping record that will be recognised by the Olympic Committee.
