He Shoots, He Scores!
Date: Oct 19, 2009
Entry: Nothing I like more than watching our local Princeton Posse hockey team play live at the Princeton & District Multi-Purpose Arena. It's an old building, probably built in Canada's Centennial Year of 1967, and it has character! But it has had many upgrades. The best thing to happen to the Arena was the addition of the KIJHL's Princeton Posse! Go, Posse, Go!!!

Collecting Clothes to Combat the Cold
Date: Oct 16, 2009
Entry: The Princeton and District Community Services group wanted to do something for community living month. They decided to hold a free concert and sell hot chocolate and hot dogs by donation to collect money for the always grateful local food bank. They used the day as a way to collect winter wear for needy families as well. The day was a success and they collected a lot of winter jackets and the collection is still going on at their office until the end of the October.

DARE to care
Date: Oct 14, 2009
Entry: Part of healthy living is staying away from drugs. In conjunction with the local RCMP, Vermilion Forks school has been running a DARE program. The program stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education and is taught by local award winning RCMP constable. The constable was the recipient of a Youth Champion Asset Building Award for his volunteerism. He leads the students through a program that focuses on helping students make good decisions, how to resist offers of drugs and alcohol in a confident manner, education on how to recognize and resist peer pressure, education on the drugs themselves and on the negative effects drugs and alcohol have on their bodies, affirmation that most kids choose not to do drugs and a positive atmosphere to interact with someone positive.

No bullies wanted
Date: Oct 14, 2009
Entry: The schools in Princeton were not going to let anti-bullying day go by without putting in their two cents worth. Most of the students chose to wear pink for the day in support of the original students who wore pink in support of a fellow student who was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. A swarm of students donning pink talked about how to avoid bullies, what to do when you see someone being bullied and how to be a good friend.

Date: Oct 14, 2009
Entry: Winter time does not slow community members down, it just makes us dress warmer. The Princeton curling club is celebrating its 80th year in existence this winter. Curing keeps many in our community busy and they have a lot of fun doing it. They host several bonspiels each winter and have dug out some curling relics to display at the curling rink for their 80th birthday - including old photographs and original curling sweaters and brooms. Congratulations curlers!

Walking is for the dogs
Date: Oct 14, 2009
Entry: One eight year old girl from our community loves dogs so much she raises money as part of an SPCA fundraiser "Paws for a Cause." This student has raised the most money for her age group for the last two years and has been awarded a prize for her efforts. LK was given a new bike and helmet from the Bike Barn in Penticton for her efforts. SPCA spokesperson Tracy Westmoreland thinks the people of Princeton are great. Two of the top fundraisers come from our little community. The walk is a huge fundraiser for the SPCA to keep their program operating and also brings some families and dogs together. Many of the SPCA's in house pets come on the walk and find a new home with a family that loves them.

Getting out alive
Date: Oct 13, 2009
Entry: Every year during "Fire Prevention Week" the Princeton Fire crew head to the two elementary schools to talk to the students about fire safety and prevention. They let the students spray water, blow the siren, try on the gear and most of all they teach them at the same time. The attention the crew gives to the students is the first step to keeping our community safe. Smart kids make a fire safe community. Thank-you!

"Just a small-town girl"
Date: Oct 9, 2009
Entry: Having spent the first 16 years of my life in Princeton before moving, I can say there's no place like home. A small town with a one-lane wooden bridge, it's very much a novelty to the outside world. Princeton is more than that. Much more.
Sure, there are places in the world- and in BC- that are bigger, with more exciting things to do and prettier things to see- but nothing really compares to the heart that drives Princeton, the tenacity that keeps it striving. Princeton is always reinventing itself, always adding more- that little bit extra- to make it this force, this feeling. There's this amazing passion in Princeton, this feeling of closeness that, as hard as one might try, you can't find somewhere else. "Home Is Where the Heart Is", they say, and Princeton's got a lot of heart.

Bridge of Dreams 2009
Date: Oct 7, 2009
Entry: On Sept.17th the Bridge of Dreams came to Town. A five hundred ton crane placed the bridge over the Tulameen River at the confluence of the Tulameen and Similkameen Rivers. The Towns people walked, cycled and photographed the event. This action creates the continuous trail for the Trans Canada Trail in the Town of Princeton. This will be healthy for the towns people as it will give them a way to go to and from work without their cars. It is a great trail for excersizing the whole family and the pets as the trail is paved from the tunnel to the Bridge of Dreams. Come see it.

Trail building at breakneck speed
Date: Oct 7, 2009
Entry: With Princeton being a small town, it is often difficult to find the money to 100% fund projects. A group of volunteers pulled together and spent last week helping to build a biking trail to network down to the beautiful Kettle Valley Trail. The trail comes out at White Sands Beach, a popular local swimming hole. An expert trail builder was hired and with the volunteer group have been working under tight time constraints to finish before the trail consultant has to leave for another job. Running out of time, the group approached the fire suppression crew to come help. Not only have they helped, they have been amazing. They did almost 2 kilometers of trail in one day. They could be sitting back at camp waiting for a fire call, but once again our local crew has gone above and beyond. They are awesome.

Hiking our beautiful land
Date: Oct 5, 2009
Entry: The Vermilion Forks Field Naturalists love the outdoors. They are always planning new hikes. The group take turns taking the hikers into new locations. They celebrate the wonder of nature on their hikes - checking out the birds and wild flowers as much as the views. Princeton seems to have no end of beautiful trails to explore, so it is no wonder the VFFN find a new hike or two each month.

Our Fire Fighters
Date: Oct 5, 2009
Entry: Fighting fires is a tough job. Princeton and the outlying area have five volunteer fire fighting crews that help keep Princeton residents safe. They fundraise, fight fire, help in medical emergencies, get woke up in the middle of the night, are on call, take first aid courses, train, hold practices and give up a lot of their free time. Volunteering and helping in emergencies is a wonderful combination that takes wonderful people to do it. Hayes Creek, Eastgate, Hedley, Tulameen and Princeton are all safe because of these dedicated volunteers. We salute you all and thank-you for protecting us and helping us when we need you most.

Volunteers bring backs to work bee
Date: Oct 5, 2009
Entry: Trail building is not for the weak of heart, yet, when China Ridge Cross-Country Ski Association put out the call for volunteers to come spend the weekend doing back-breaking manual labour on the new mountain biking trail they are building under the guidance of Whistler trail building expert D.M., there was no shortage of volunteers stepping forward. The weekend was highly productive and proved once again that Princeton volunteers are some of the best.

Highland Games in Castlegar
Date: Oct 5, 2009
Entry: The Princeton Highland Dancers have a couple of fantastic teachers showing them the dances they need to compete in the Highland Games held around the province. Our local dancers usually bring home some medals. Many of the competitions have close to a hundred or more competitors participating. The dance steps are intricate and take a great deal of strength, agility and cardiovascular endurance. It is a challenge our local dancers love. Dance like nobody is watching, but if they are...a medal would be nice...

How to fish in Princeton
Date: Oct 3, 2009
Entry: If you are a fisherman or woman, Princeton is the place to be. We have fished in many of the local lakes but there are probably a hundred that we haven't even seen yet. Where else can you "walk the plank" to get to your boat, see blue herons take off with their big spread of wings, listen to the loons calling each other to say there are more fish for the catching, watch an osprey dive toward the water or just relax in the sun enjoying the peaceful surroundings.
Come and enjoy; you may want to stay like we did!

Running for Cancer
Date: Oct 2, 2009
Entry: The Terry Fox Run is done each year at the Princeton schools with a real sense of pride and accomplishment. The students know what a great hero he was and it is never hard to get them all to participate. Even some of the kids on crutches hobbled through the route. Both John Allison Elementary and Vermilion Forks School, raised a lot of money for the Terry Fox Foundation and enjoyed themselves at the same time.

Music and art bring joy to the community
Date: Oct 2, 2009
Entry: Several years ago, the town of Princeton did fundraising to bring a piano to town. The piano had no permanent home once it arrived. It had been in the Baptist Church until recently. Now that the new Riverside Theatre is officially finished a crew brought the piano to its new home. To celebrate the residency of the piano, local musical talent, K.S., gave a free concert to the community. The concert was followed with an art show and some tutorials on making things out of clay and information sessions on upcoming art classes. Princeton has a thriving art community from music to art. It is alive and well in Princeton.

Entry: The people of Princeton are Community Spirit personified! When someone is in need, there is always backing and when someone is doing well, we are always behind them.
