Honest Town
Date: Oct 26, 2009
Entry: If you are ever going to loose your purse, you want to be lucky enough to loose it in Princeton. We had three purses turned in to the Visitor Centre this summer and all three got back safe and sound to their owners. One lady had a message left on her cell phone even before she knew her purse was missing; another was thankful and surprised that everything was in her purse when it was mailed to her address; and the other was from Europe - she happily drove back to Princeton from a neighbouring City to claim her purse.

Bonanza 2009
Date: Oct 23, 2009
Entry: Youth from across Canada came to Princeton in August this year to participate in Bonanza 2009, the Canadian Junior Hereford show. This is the first time Bonanza took place on a ranch and in a town as small as Princeton. The many local volunteers as well as the Copper Creek Ranch made this one of the best junior show's ever.

TCT Bridge of Dreams
Date: Oct 23, 2009
Entry: A healthy lifestyle is what Princeton is all about. We are so very happy to have the Trans Canada Trail go right though our town. The Bridge of Dreams was a name given to a railway bridge constructed in Princeton as it was the last bridge built to complete the railway system. Now, the New Bridge of Dreams, complete this section of the TCT and will become an important addition to our community trail system.

Vetrans Square Adds Community Spirit
Date: Oct 23, 2009
Entry: We have a very close and caring community. We enjoy one another's company and being together. This past summer we recently renovated our Town Square with the help of a Provincial Government "Spirit Square" grant. The results were far better than we could have ever imagined. Now we gather at "Vetran's Square" and are very proud of our accomplishments and our community. Our research shows that communities with Town Squares are more successful than communities with out. Yup!

A lesson or two
Date: Oct 23, 2009
Entry: There are many locals who have Arthritis. Princeton is a community full of activity, so no one wants to be slowed down by their aches and pains. The Riverside Theatre in conjunction with the BC Arthritis Society hosted an Arthritis Clinic to give people the tools to better live with the disease. Attendees were impressed with the knowledgeable tips, tools and tricks offered to them by professionals. It was an excellent clinic and will keep Arthritis sufferers moving, so they can continue to live a healthy lifestyle.

Relaxing man style
Date: Oct 23, 2009
Entry: Local barber gives men a shave the old fashioned way. Using a straight razor, hot towels, shaving cream, a steady hand and plenty of experience, this barber gives men a chance to sneak away for a bit of special treatment. It is an art. Barbers no longer have to learn how to shave to get their certification, so ones who can do a nice shave this way are very hard to find. It is quite a process and the men like their "spa" day man style. This is just one of the hidden talents Princetonites offer.

Working out in a new way
Date: Oct 23, 2009
Entry: When the local Junior B hockey team heard that the community garden needed some guys with a little brute force behind them, the Posse team guys showed up in full force to help out. Between camera poses they worked hard and built some new beds that will be used next year. They dug dirt, moved concrete bricks and pushed heaped wheelbarrows around for two days. They were a great help and got in a work-out too, not just the kind they are used to.

Princeton Sights
Date: Oct 23, 2009
Entry: Many local residents love to have a good time. When one of the students at Princeton Secondary School had his 16th birthday his family showed up in full force to give everyone some chuckles. Dragging cans behind their car and dressed as silly as could be, they gave the 16 year old a birthday he won't soon forget. Small town people have a lot of fun this way and because everybody knows everybody the "Princeton Sights" brings smiles to everyone's faces.

The Community Garden
Date: Oct 23, 2009
Entry: John Allison Elementary School took an unused space and turned it into something more. The space is now a wonderful community garden. This spring, summer and fall the students were able to help build the garden, plant seeds, watch them grow, harvest the vegetables and make stone soup with some of the ingredients. They learned so much and had tons of fun along the way. The teachers made a huge effort to turn the garden into a learning tool and did a fantastic job. Some classes even brought in butterflies to metamorphous and be released into the garden.

Christened at last
Date: Oct 23, 2009
Entry: After months of anticipation, the new square in the downtown core of Princeton was finished. Town Council had the community submit names to call the lovely green space built for entertaining and enjoyment. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion brought 165 signatures to the Town Council meeting requesting the space be called Veteran's Square in honour of the veterans who fought and died in war. The Cenotaph has long been the center piece of the area where the new square was built and it didn't take long for a decision to be reached. Veteran's Square honours Princeton's past and brightens our future. With the square complete, it didn't take long either for a mischievous local to christen the new fountain with some bubbles. The square will be around long after all the bubbles have popped bringing Princetonites lots of enjoyment.

Date: Oct 23, 2009
Entry: For the second year in a row, local F.N. did the Weekend to End Breast Cancer and raised over $2,750. She is amazed by all the support within the streets - pink ribbons on shop signs, the support staff, honking horns, lemonade stands and people cheering. Tears and joy will bring her back next year.

Running for water
Date: Oct 23, 2009
Entry: When a local noticed five guys running along the side of the road followed by a van with handmade signs on it, she got curious and pulled over to talk with the crew. It turns out the five fellows were running to raise money for water wells in Africa for Water Canada. The fundraising idea took on new meaning when one of the younger brothers of one of the runners was tragically killed in a car accident in Australia months earlier. The brother had a love for adventure and those who loved him felt they needed to do this run for him. The story was so touching that the local newspaper gave the runners a huge boost printing the article on the front page.

Princeton Performing Arts Society
Date: Oct 22, 2009
Entry: Otherwise known as PPAS - is a very robust Theater group that has been thrilling Princeton audiences for several years now. We have turned all of our profits back into improving the former school that is now a thriving Community Centre that houses many other forms of the arts as well.
One of the performaces that is in the works for 2010 is a series of vignettes about founding families of Princeton. The plan is to use actual photos of the town taken in the past and have the actors perform in front of them. This Theater Group is just the icing on the cake of why I love Princeton!
Come and join us for loads of fun!!

Our piece of heaven
Date: Oct 21, 2009
Entry: Just a short drive out of town in any direction there is country living at its best. Many locals have animals. Horses can have an easy life amongst all the green grass and space for most of the year. Winter time brings hand feeding the animals. Princeton grows rich hay and the winters aren't too terribly cold, so owning horses is a nice luxury of country living. Horse lovers often ride into the back country on one of the many old trails that surround the town.

66 years and still going
Date: Oct 21, 2009
Entry: The Elks and Royal Purple have been helping out the children in Princeton for a long time. A visit from the District Deputy for an inspection of the local chapter brought up a neat revelation. Two members of the Princeton Royal Order of Purple have been members for 66 years. One has been with the local chapter since it started, so is a charter member. The members help send children who might not otherwise afford it to camp. They have an Addictions Awareness Program, a Deaf Detection Program and a Fund for Children. They are continually helping children in our community. They are a generous group of volunteers who give a lot of their own time to helping our community and the health and well-being of our children.

Girls Basketball
Date: Oct 20, 2009
Entry: In March, 2009, the grade 8 girls from the small town of Princeton capped off a wonderful season by placing third at the grade 8 girls provincial championships. We were the smallest school there and the girls did Princeton proud. The spirit of Princeton shone through as the whole town got behind the team. In a few short weeks before the trip to the Provincial tournament, the team raised enough money to cover travel costs. We were the talk of the tournament (Did you see that Princeton team play!). Just shows what can happen when people get behind a good cause.

Walking the Benches
Date: Oct 20, 2009
Entry: Fall is my favourite month, and with the crisp clean air we enjoy in Princeton, I love my almost daily walk. For the most part, Princeton is settled across three benches, and I live on the third bench. By the the time I walk down into town and then back up to home, I've had a great work out. My sister who is a runner and lives in Edmonton loves to run our benches for a great aerobic work out when she visits.
Princeton has so many access points up and down the benches that it's easy to vary your walk each day.

Not A Lap Dog Anymore!
Date: Oct 19, 2009
Entry: Our Dalmatian 'Eddie' is 10-years old. I think he still thinks he's a puppy. My wife takes him grocery shopping frequently and leaves him in the car as he's quite a good guard dog. The problem with taking him grocery shopping is that he seems to think that he can still sit on my wife's lap on the ride there and back. What makes it more interesting is that in a small town this may not look too unusual. I think 'Eddie' has quite a following around town as friends in our neighbourhood have asked to take him 'shopping' with them as well! Neighbours helping neighbours. One of the best things about small town living!

Play-By-Play
Date: Oct 19, 2009
Entry: I'm the internet play-by-play announcer for the local KIJHL hockey team, the Princeton Posse. I had never done play-by-play before so when I was asked to do it two years ago I was very excited about making what I considered a serious contribution to the team and using the webcasts as a way to promote our community. What I didn't expect was to receive e-mails from parents and family members of players on the teams in the webcasts. They told me how important the webcasts had become for them. Many of the boys on our team are away from home for the first time in their lives. Many of these boys have families many hundred kilometres away and the webcasts allowed parents to connect 'virtually' with their boys. I never saw my contribution to the team as being such an important link until those e-mails arrived. I would never have been able to experience that in a far larger community. It's connections like that which keep this community chugging along and I'm happy to be part of it.

As Far As My Backyard
Date: Oct 19, 2009
Entry: One of the many things I love about being in Princeton is the fact that whenever I want to take some interesting photos I rarely have to venture any further than our backyard. My wife knows I really officially consider Spring has arrived when I can get photos of the tulips in our backyard. For years I'd try to get photos as they opened only to discover that deer in the neighbourhood had nibbled the heads off the tulips before I could get near them with my camera. So we took some stucco wire and fashioned a barrier protecting the tulips. Last Spring I was so pleased that I was finally going to get photos of the tulips in our yard. So when the day came I was all ready and prepared. I walked gingerly to the side of the house where the tulips grow and to my surprise...they were minus their heads. I was disappointed and went into the house to share the bad news. My wife already knew...she found our Dalmatian 'Eddie' finishing off the last tulip minutes before I got home from work!

Crazy Critters
Date: Oct 19, 2009
Entry: They are called Marmots. Usually they are cute and quiet creatures you rarely notice unless you startle one and it lets out a loud 'warning' chirp to let other Marmots within what seems like miles around know that you happened upon one. This past year these crazy critters moved into my yard and started digging tunnels throughout my property. At first it was cute...but once things started disappearing in the holes they were digging it wasn't funny anymore. But I still think they are kinda cute. Just don't tell my wife. She thinks I hate them!

A Community Rebuilds
Date: Oct 19, 2009
Entry: The local hockey team, the Princeton Posse, had an unfortunate accident since last season. In a series of fires set by arsonists one night the teams lounge and exercise building was gutted. The team did not have insurance on any of the contents - exercise equipment, game jerseys and equipment, assorted other entertainment supplies and equipment - and all were lost. Many of these items were donated by fans and supporters of the team so that the boys could have their own space to hang out and bond or relax. Luckily, insurance on the adjoining arena will cover most of the cost of rebuilding the facility. And there will likely be community members who will step up and contribute quietly to ensure the boys on our team will once again have a place to call their own. That's what we do in a small town. We get together and help each other out.
