The Young Life Club
Date: Dec 7, 2009
Entry: The local Young Life Club has between 45 and 65 teens in its midst on most meeting nights. They have no strings attached meetings once a week in the basement of the Baptist Church. They club focusses on self-esteem and having a good time. The group is committed to making every teen feel welcome, accepted and safe. The kids and their leaders play games, sing and laugh. There are many physically active games intertwined into their weekly meetings. Recently the club has had: the KGB Run (a run from the water tower back to the church without getting caught); Skate board and plunger relays (interestingly self-explanatory); The Amazing Race ( eating some interesting variations of food at different locations) and most recently, Bigger and Better ( a treasure hunt that begins with a plastic spoon or pencil, going door to door throughout the community trading for something bigger and or better.)t is quite often said that, "it takes a community to raise a child." The leaders of Young Life Princeton, are doing their part—"mind, body and soul."

A poem on winter in Princeton
Date: Dec 3, 2009
Entry: The days are crisp and bright and clear,
the nights are filled with stars so near;
It seems they’ve fallen to the ground,
and landed there without a sound.
The earth’s a big white eiderdown,
and trees are wearing long white gowns.

No Ghost Town, This...
Date: Dec 2, 2009
Entry: In 1884 copper ore was discovered on Copper Mountain. In 1928 the Great Depression forced the mining of the ore to stop. In 1936 an economic rebirth came and the mine worked again. However, in 1957 high wages and low copper prices once again stopped all mining. In 1972 Similco Mines came on stream and the town lived on. But trouble once again threatened Princeton with rising costs and falling prices of copper ore. If you listened you could hear the footsteps of the past, echoeing down the mountainside and the mine was closed once more. Our history's exciting and a new era's begun - not willing to claim defeat and become a ghost town as in the days gone by. We have a new game in town - and it's called the re-opening of the mine. Work is in progress for the opening in 2011 and the employment of over 250. Once again our small town lives on in mining...

Three time Olympian
Date: Dec 2, 2009
Entry: While Wally Wallace has never participated in the Olympics as an athlete, he has participated in three Olympics in his own way. He was there to celebrate the Canadian gold medal in the four man bobsled in Innsbruck, Austria in '64, he ran as a torchbearer for the '88 Calgary Winter Olympics and is running one more time as one of 20 Canadian peacekeepers chosen to run in the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. Wallace was on the first United Nations peacekeeping mission sent to the Suez Canal under the leadership of Lester B. Pearson. Pearson won a Nobel Peace Prize for envisioning Canadian peacekeepers as a solution to a dispute between Egypt, Britain, France, Brazil and israel that had the potential of leading to a world war. Wallace is a proud Canadian and deserves to represent not only Canada, but the Canadian peacekeepers.

Expanding the mind
Date: Dec 1, 2009
Entry: Everybody has talent. No matter who you are, you are good at something. That is the message the teachers at Vermilion Forks School try to constantly instil in their students. One of the ways the staff at VFE help students realize their potential is by giving them inspiration. While not everybody might be great at sports, some might be wonderful writers. Ann Alma is a writer whose work appeals to students. She talked about the importance of never giving up and how it took her many attempts before she got published. Alma had written a book called Brave Deeds about a family who helped save many lives in Holland. Her stories inspire the students not just to write, but to keep trying and to show compassion for others. The visit left the students with a lot to think about and some new books to read.

Today, Firemaster employs 60 people and pays out 2 million in wages annually. 95% of their wood is from the Princeton area and the firewood is "produced out of unwanted fibre," said Public Relations Officer Paul Adams. "We use the trees killed by the Mountain Pine Beetle. Wood has the green advantage of being carbon neutral. For every tree harvested, dead or alive, another tree is planted in its place." The company has also been involved in a Provincial Wood Exchange Program that exchanges inefficient wood stoves for efficient ones. The success of this local company is a source of community pride and has become a model for other plants of its kind to follow.
