Keeping the men out of trouble
Date: Dec 11, 2009
Entry: In the winter time the men like to keep busy too. Curling is just one of the activities that gives them a fun outlet to brush off some winter time snow. Princeton is one of three of the oldest curling clubs in the province and was the first to hold a cash bonspiel. Two of the old teams had their photos taken at Lower Mainland bonspiels back in the day. Princeton was known as one of the best clubs in the province and usually had to turn teams away from their bonspiels. They were known for their fun-filled weekends and still have teams from all over the province show up to play.

Our Champions!
Date: Dec 11, 2009
Entry: Quietly, often, without any noise at all, there are people, good people, silently making the heartbeat of Princeton pump positive lifelines into the youth of our little town. They don't do it because they want a pat on the back and they definitely don't do it for the money (there is none). They do it because they want to.
Many members in our community know who these core volunteers are and what they are all about, but some don't. It was with that thought in mind that the Child and Youth Committee joined forces to let these volunteers know how much what they do means. Several outstanding members of our community receive a Champions Award each year for their time spent coaching, mentoring, teaching and helping our youth reach their full potential. They are our champions.
It goes without saying, especially in a small town like Princeton, that volunteers are the heart of Princeton. They do more behind the scenes work than some people do in a day. It is hard to think of a youth program or for that matter any program that doesn't rely on the generosity and goodness of volunteers. Most of these programs just wouldn't be possible without them.

Girls play hockey too!
Date: Dec 11, 2009
Entry: Local hockey player Colby W. played with the Princeton boys until she was recruited by the coach of the Penticton Vees. At 12, she was young to join the team, but proved she had the talent by scoring seven goals and racking up 11 points in 18 games. The female midget AAA team was happy to have found Colby and she was happy to have made the move. Now, she has moved onto another female team and is doing magnificent with the Kamloops team. Last year, (at 13/14) she accumulated over 60 points for her team and then, was picked to be a part of another team, Team Okanagan. Colby went to the Under 16 Provincials with her teammates and scored the winning goal in the final 27 seconds to give her team a gold medal win. This year Colby is back playing for Kamloops. Her family has made a big commitment to drive her every week back and forth, so she can continue to play the game she loves. Colby dreams of one day making the Female Olympic team and with her drive and talent that dream may one day become reality.

It's a wonderful life
Date: Dec 11, 2009
Entry: A healthy family lifestyle is why we choose to live in Princeton. I know we could move to a larger centre and make more money. But at what cost. How can you put a price on those days at the lake or snowmobiling or playing baseball as a family. It's priceless.

From not so good to awesome!
Date: Dec 10, 2009
Entry: Bill Minor was not what you would call a model citizen. But one thing we can't change is the fact that he called Princeton "home" for several years under an alias name of George Edwards. Maybe not something to brag about but this little bit of local history did contribute to something awesome. It inspired the name of our local KIJHL Junior Hockey club... The Princeton Posse! A name in town that represents great things and inspires hard work and community pride. Thank you for that Mr. Edwards!

Bald and Beautiful
Date: Dec 9, 2009
Entry: The Royal Canadian Legion was the site of the 1st Annual Shave-A-Thon for the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
Sharon Paterson, along with legion members Jim Cromarty and Rick Van Heeswijk decided to do something for charity. The outcome was a Shave-A-Thon for the Heart & Stroke Foundation. $5,000 was raised in that short time.
With the half-dozen ‘shavees’ on the Valentine’s Day afternoon in the Legion Lounge, the four men and two women cued up.
Legion member, Jim Cromarty, raised $192 to be scalped—both face and head and he hasn’t looked back.
“It was fun,” says Cromarty on his experience. “But it was cold—real cold,” says Cromarty, who works outdoors. “At 3:30 in the morning, man, I’ll tell ya, I need a toque and a scarf—it was minus 16 the next day [after the shaving].”
First to take the challenge was Chuck Whitlock, who brought in $1,400 in total, having personally matched all his pledges.
“I had my beard and my head shaved,” says Whitlock of his experience in the make-shift barber’s chair. “It feels incredible—now that I’ve gotten it all shaved off, I kind of like it this way—I don’t need shampoo anymore.”
Of the four men in line for the scalping, two women took their places at the stations for their turn at getting their head shaved.
Denise Duguay and Donna Yuelle were next in line. Duguay raised over $356, Yuelle raised $658 for the Heart & Stroke Foundation and they both felt that it was never easier in their estimation. And when asked how she likes her new look, Duguay has this to say.
“I love it,” she says about her new look. “I love it, I really do—I was really proud that I put that challenge up.”
While Duguay was taking pledges for the Heart & Stroke Foundation, she decided that as a long-time smoker, she didn’t want her pledge money to go towards her, so she quit smoking, bought herself a tricycle and has been touring town with it.
“You have to pedal it—I had it out yesterday and you should have seen the looks I got,” says Duguay on her new purchase and health plan. “Oh my God—the looks I was getting!”
And as far as having her head shaved for Heart & Stoke, she changed her own life.
“I’m so proud—so proud,” she says about her lifestyle change. “I wear my bald head as a badge.”
As far as Donna Yuelle is concerned, she would certainly do it again.
“It didn’t bother me,” she says of the loss of her locks. “I feel a lot lighter—the reason that I did it was the day before we had lost a lifetime friend to a stroke—most of my pledges were from the Legion.”

Building homes
Date: Dec 7, 2009
Entry: Several months ago I was told about an opportunity, which comes once a year in November for seniors or anyone who has two weeks to spare.
During those two weeks participants as a group will travel by plane or/and bus to the Baja North in Mexico, stay in clean and comfortable and in my case hostel style housing and eat fantastic traditional Mexican foods cooked by a native Mexican woman.
Activities included the main purpose in going which was to build homes and schools for needy Mexican families in the Vicente Guerraro area. In my case there were three projects so our group split into three as we each decided where we wanted to work. There were 18 of us leaving from Penticton –a mixed group of singles and couples with the average age being 59. We were individuals from age 24 to 76 from Princeton, Keremeos, Penticton, and Summerland.
The experience was rewarding and another way the people of Princeton are opening their arms to help wherever they are needed

Shaving heads
Date: Dec 7, 2009
Entry: Thanks to the support and kindness of fellow students at Princeton Secondary School, Grade 8 student, friend and peer has been given a new rainbow to follow.
The students of PSS, banded together to raise money to aid in the costs of their fellow classmate, Mark Cimbaro's Cancer treatments as he undergoes chemotherapy on the Lower Mainland. When Cimbaro's peers learned of his illness and the treatments that are involved they sought out a way to help.
Principal Bill Lawrence offered to shave his head at the last minute if a minimum of $100.00 could be raised in 5 minutes. Needless to say, the dollars were compiled quickly and Mr. Lawrence sported a new hairdo.

Riding for forever
Date: Dec 7, 2009
Entry: Local rider, M W, has been riding horses for most of her life.
She didn't return from the Canadian National Championship Andalusian show empty handed.
The four-day Nationals were held at Chilliwack's Heritage Park and in that four-day competition, Weisskopff arrived back home not only with the coveted Canadian National Champion Western Pleasure open award, thanks to her 14- year-old purebred Andalusian stallion, Tribuno II, but also won first place in "Doma Vaquera" (a class which is a cross between Reining and High School Dressage).
If you as Marion Weisskopff how long she's been riding, the answer's always the same.
"Before I was born."
W rides and trains in Princeton and keeps not only people active, but their horses.
