I can't believe we are here!
Date: Mar 12, 2010
Entry: "I can't believe I am at the Olympics." These were the words spoken by my daughter Shelby as we sat at the top of the bleachers at Cypress directly in front of the aerial jumps. The seats were great and courtesy of Princeton winning the title of Gamestown. I was honoured to be one of the recipients of a pair of tickets and thoroughly took advantage of the gift to enjoy. My daughter and I watched all three Canadian men qualify for the finals. It was thrilling to hear the crowds cheer for their own and thrilling to feel the Olympic joy. After the freestyle aerials, we went downtown and caught up with my brother and son who spent the day travelling through the downtown Olympic venues. The experience is definitely one I will be crossing off my bucket list. Thank-you Gamestown 2010!

Princeton honoured with Inuit ladies
Date: Feb 17, 2010
Entry: A few days before the Olympic Torch Relay local Inuit transplant, Bernice Kunderman had two of her talented friends arrive to help her showcase their culture to the people of Princeton. Kunderman and her friends, Karen and Leslie, have performed for the then, Prime Minister of Canada Jean Cretien and Governor General Adrianne Clarkson as well as movie star Ralph Fiennes. They knew what they were doing and agreed to give free demonstations of their Inuit sports and throat singing to all three Princeton schools. It was an honour and a privelege to have them in our town and they went out of their way to let everyone give their culture a try. One of the women who performed with them in the past - Mariah was unable to come because she was performing at the Opening Ceremonies at the Olympics and Princeton has no doubt that thesee three could have been there too - they were awesome and we were truly privileged.

When the torch came to town!
Date: Feb 17, 2010
Entry: When the Olympic torch came through Princeton, over 1500 townspeople and visitors came out at 7ish in the morning for the 8 a.m. Sunday morning jaunt through town. The actual time of the relay was under 10 minutes, but that did not deter anyone from getting up. There are under 3000 in the town -not bad for Sunday sleep-in day.

Crazy Lady Steals Olympic Torch
Date: Feb 17, 2010
Entry: Princeton is a community full of people who like to have fun. These ladies are some of our own. Proud to be Canadian and proud to be from Princeton was the inspiration for their silliness on the morning of the Olympic Torch Relay when it passed through town. Even though our little town did not get the media exposure the larger centers got, we showed up in our Canadian clothing to support our country, our athletes, and our town...oh and to have some fun doing it. Go crazy ladies!

A warm welcome
Date: Feb 5, 2010
Entry: When I first moved here in 2000 I was welcomed by many people as well as a Welcome Wagon Representative.
Shortly after I met and married my husband and we started a family. We are so grateful to be raising our family in such a great community. There are so many more freedoms here than in the city.
So, as the kids grew and became more involved, so did I. I looked at what I wanted to do in Princeton and discovered the WW rep had moved on to something else. What a great way to give back! It has been a exciting year for me meeting and greeting the new comers and before long I needed an assistant.
So, if you are planning to move to Princeton and I hope you do, Claire and I, Renee, have a warm welcome for waiting you.

Happy in Princeton!
Date: Jan 28, 2010
Entry: I am proud to be living in Princeton! I feel very lucky to be able to enjoy all the great things Princeton has to offer. There is biking, hiking, running on tons of beautiful trails, there are so many lakes to camp at, you could not camp at the same one if you went each and every weekend throug out the summer, not to mention that they all have excellent fishing. We have a beautiful town, beautiful scenary, and we, as a community, take care of each other. Being that I have never wanted to live in a large city, I have to wonder if the people living in bigger centers have any clue as to how spoiled we are to get to live here!

High School not just for learning

An artistic birthday present
Date: Jan 27, 2010
Entry: The Princeton Arts Council was awarded a 2010 Legacies Now grant for $8000 to create a Community Mosaic Mural to be installed at the Riverside Community Center. The project is the brainchild of the Princeton Potter's Guild and will be created and assembled under the leadership of Robin Lowe, a local glass and mosaic artist. The mural will be a mosaic consisting of glass and handmade ceramic tiles and will be completed in commemoration of Princeton's 150th anniversary. The entire community will be invited to become involved in the project. It is planned to include school children, senior citizens, business and professional communities, service organizations and First Nations who will create handmade coloured ceramic tiles to be used in the mosaic.
The Princeton Arts Council is very excited about this project and encourages the entire community to help with the creation of this work of art.

Banding together for Haiti
Date: Jan 25, 2010
Entry: There are three schools in Princeton. None of them are very big, but when they are needed they always come through. After talking about the earthquake in Haiti in Social Studies during current events, the schools decided to do something besides talk. They got together and did some fierce fundraising. In less than one week, the schools raised well over $1100 for Haiti.

Crisis Society gives back
Date: Jan 25, 2010
Entry: In awe of this community’s exceptional outpouring of generosity, President Alan Kovaltsenko and the members of the Princeton Crisis Assistance Society decided to say thank you with a free concert, this past weekend. Held at the Riverside Community Centre on Saturday, January 23, the concert included entertainment as well as home-made sweet treats and refreshments all free of charge.
“Jazz on 3 Eh!,” a trio of locals entertained the audience with their talented instruments and voices. Karen Smart, Barb Bushewsky and Corry Oerlemans. A familiar Princeton performer, Patty-Ann Harrower treated the audience to her latest talents on the piano and then to the familiar talents of her guitar and songs.
The evening’s entertainment was brought to a close with the crooning sounds of the “Troubadour” himself, Mr. Alan Kovaltsenko. Kovaltsenko was pleased with the turnout for the concert, thanking those who took part in its presentation and to the community, for it’s generosity in helping those in need.

Helping a country with almost nothing
Date: Jan 18, 2010
Entry: RCMP officer Mike Leiding and his two teenage daughters headed off to Haiti for Christmas. They helped out an orphanage outside Port-au-Prince just weeks before it was hit by a devastating earthquake. The Canaan orphanage is safe, but the small clinic there has been inundated with patients. Leiding went over to make a difference and by the time he left he and his daughters had raised $6,000 to take with them. In a country like Haiti people like the Leidings are true saviours. That $6000 dollars is probably helping out in more ways than we will ever know.

Cashing in in Vegas Country Style
Date: Jan 12, 2010
Entry: Jeremy moved to Princeton with his family about eight years ago from Abbotsford. He started competitive roping at the age of ten. As his skills grew so did the expenses. At 22, Jeremy and his older brother decided to take a run at the World Series Finale in Las Vegas, Nevada. There are a number of qualifiers held throughout B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and the United States. “We have to win one of them to move on to Vegas,” said Buhler. As skill and luck would have it, the Buhlers got their break in Medicine Hat, Alberta. “We won there,” said Buhler.
Jeremy and his older brother Clint, started riding horses at an early age. It wasn’t long before their dad started teaching them the skills necessary to lasso a moving target. Jeremy's brother Clint lives in Longview, Alberta, so in early December the two got together to practice. “We met at a friend’s place in Arizona,” said Jeremy. “We rodeo together in the summer, but I go to school in Texas and Clint shoes horses in Alberta the rest of the year, so we had to squeeze in some time together before the World Series Finale on Dec. 9 in Vegas. The World Series Finale consists of four rounds of roping. The times from all four roping qualifiers are tabulated together to decide who will be the overall winner. On Dec. 9, the teams rope for three rounds. They must be in the top 20 to move on to the rope off final on Dec. 13.
“We were in first place with a couple of seconds lead over our nearest competitor,” said Jeremy at the end of the first three runs. Then, they had four days of waiting. “It was very nerve-wracking,” Jeremy stated. “I hardly slept.” On Dec. 13, Jeremy and Clint had the roping round they hoped for and won the title Team Roping Champions. The prize came with a purse of $109,000 U.S. for each of them, buckles and miniature saddle trophies. “It was unbelievable,” said Jeremy, “just awesome. I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to afford to stay in school, but now I can. I have been extremely blessed.”
