Sports of all sorts makes PG Gamestown
Date: Jan 10, 2010
Entry: Prince George has welcomed it's newest sports franchises, the Prince George Fury. This indoor soccer franchise is a proud member of the Canadian Major Indoor Soccer League and the local side made their debut this month with close to 2,000 coming out to watch the home opener. While this is a professional league many who are wearing Prince George colours (Fury Colours) are doing it for the love of the game and that in itself was one of the reasons the fans in PG that turned out gave them such a great welcome.
The Fury join our two junior hockey teams (PG is one of the few cities of its size to support not just one junior hockey team but two) the BCHL Spruce Kings who have been here for more than 40 years - and the WHL Cougars who arrived about a decade ago. We are also the proud home of the UNBC Timberwolves who have displayed their high skill level on both the basketball court and soccer pitch. Just a small example of the sports of all sorts that help make PG Gamestown2010.

Coldsnap makes life in PG a little more...
Date: Jan 8, 2010
Entry: Coldsnap makes life in PG a little more musical. What is Coldsnap?
Simply put, it’s a nine night winter music festival, having just finished its second year, brought to you by the same hardworking volunteers who have presented the Prince George Folkfest for four summers. Each night has a different theme and features outstanding musicians. There are a variety of venues and something for every musical taste, from concerts, to workshops, to dances.
Why Coldsnap? The reason for Coldsnap is to provide Prince George with a musical respite from the mid-winter blahs that seem to set in toward the end of January. Running usually the last week of January into February Coldsnap is something to look forward to, something to get a gang together for a night out, something to warm up the cold winter nights with fun, music, friendship and maybe even a little romance.

We love the young and older
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: One of the greatest experiences we had recently was hosted the BC seniors games and it was great to see the generations that were represented. Of particular note was watching the youngest hand out medals to the "older guys" who took part in the "masters" soccer portion of the games. Fantastic fields, a great multi-sport event and inspirational moments for young and the older!

The Annual Trek to the Track...
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: One of the annual rituals when you have kids in Prince George is heading downtown to Masich Place Stadium (Named after track icon Tom Masich..but that's another story) and taking in the annual elementary school relays.
This fantastic facility has hosted everything from the opening ceremonies of the BC Summer Games to a Vancouver 86ers soccer exhibition game, to the National Legion Track and Field Championships. There is nothing like a great spring day in Prince George to sit back and relax and take the competitive fun.
This doesn't happen without the support of the School District, the teachers, the track club and the volunteers. They are what makes Prince George GamesTown2010!

So much to do for the kids
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: I love Prince George for what it offers for my children. Aside from the fantastic educational opportunities and beyond the safe and friendly community is the many opportunities for sports development. For years my young daughter has played in the youth soccer association and most recently has spent a couple of season in the minor basketball program. I salute and paid tribute to the wonderful corp of volunteers in this city who are making an immeasurable positive impact on the lives of so many of our youth.
My daughter recently attended a University basketball game and played at half time. She will remember the experience for life and already has her sights set on playing for the lady timber wolves at UNBC. Now if she can only get through grade four.

PG is Winter Wonderland
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: If you want to have a sense of Prince George's Gamestown spirit, the city's community spirit, you needn't look any further than the volunteers that each year help out with the Winter Lights Competition.
Not only does this dedicated group of volunteers help us celebrate those beautiful days when we have six feet of snow and it is minus 20... they always challenge themselves to do more. In 2009 that meant playing host to the National Winter Lights Symposium that drew hundreds from across the country to Prince George.
In order to give them a sense of what was in store the organizations put together a short video and posted it on You Tube and with the greatest of respect to Bryan Adams we have provided the link here in case you are interested in understanding how game we are...for experiencing life

Prince George is...
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: Prince George is Gamestown not only for the games we play but the way we play them. We have among the most volunteers per capita in the country because we know it is better to give than miss an opportunity to host. Beyond the games on our fantastic outdoor facilities and beyond the games that are played at our many indoor fields, can be found the heart of our community and it's that spirit that makes this city "event central". If you want to put on a conference or an event, if you want to put on a tournament that will create memories for a lifetime, come north to BC's hospitality city.
This thriving city of 80,000 features a world class field house in the northern sports centre at UNBC, a total of six arenas including CN Centre that holds 6,000. We have a couple of great aquatic centres including our main Aquatic Center that features a 50m tank with movable floor, 5m diving tower, wave pool, exercise room, as well as a sauna and jacuzzi. Our youth and senior soccer fields, all located in one central area are the envy of the province.
You combine that with the leadership displayed for years by Mayor and Council and you have a dynamic combination for success. The City has laid out and delivered a plan over the last decade to build world class facilities that have greatly enhanced the athletic opportunities for those in Prince George and throughout the north. In addition we have so many committed sports organizations that have raised funds and contributed volunteer time to enhance facilities ranging from our soccer fields and ball diamonds to the BMX track and lawn bowling facility. There is a game for everyone and everyone in Prince George is in the game. What a great life.

Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: You can't play the game if you can't get on the ground and with an airport that has the third longest runway in Canada and operates 24/7, you can rest assured no matter what national or international event you plan to attend in BC's northern capital, you are welcome to land anytime! One of the most recent examples was the Southern Air 747 that landed just prior to Christmas. They are in the world wide logistics game and so too is Prince George!

Hey Judges Prince George should be the next GameTown 2010!
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: I was one of the winners in the BCHYDRO Extreme makeover weight loss challenge! (sort of like the Biggest Loser show). By winning I receive 2 tickets to an Olympic hockey venue! I loss 10.8% of my body fat in 12 weeks. Which was 32 lbs. I have lost a total of 45lbs and feel healthy and great! My co-workers were great, they too have lost between 5 and 50 lbs as well!. We are all eating healthy promoting exercise, fun and fitness! The whole town of PG was behind me 100% after being interviewed in a article in the PG Citizen! People on the street would see me at Timmies with a coffee and say “Hey no Donut for you! Right?” & “Keep up the good work!” So judges I know that Prince George would use the GameTown prize money for healthy community activities! This town has an awesome outdoor Ice Oval! Awesome rec center that could benefit with more workout equipment and such. Thanks for taking on the role of Judging it takes time and energy and commitment. Yours truly BH

Nothing goes together like active transportation and a good cup of java
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: There is a new look to the Timmy's drive thru these days in Prince George. Well, at least there was on national clean air day last year as the route usually occupied by vehicles gave way (at least for a moment) to a "drive thru cyclist". In this case it was the Mayor (wearing his Spirit of BC Jacket) showing that you can continue the usual morning routine and promote healthy lifestyle choices along the way.

Boxing Legend Gets His Medal and His Day of Honour
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: It is not about numbers it is about quality and there aren't many that can match the quality of boxing icon Harold Mann. He was one of the rare Canadians to win gold at the British Empire Games in the early 60's. Unfortunately his medal that was on display at the museum last year was stolen. In an extremely classy move the museum teamed up with the BC Sports Hall of Fame and a special production company back east to recast the medal. The replica medal was provided to Harold at a special event at Exploration just before Christmas in front of family, friends, dignitaries and sports reps from the city and province. He even got a day proclaimed in his honour by the Mayor, something that also happened way back in the early 60's when he returned after winning the boxing gold for Canada. Class act all around Prince George and way to go Harold, you will be forever a part of BC Boxing history!

Prince George Gold Medal Town
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: I have a lot of friends who have left Prince George for warmer climates. They always brag about how great it is there. I personally love it here. Prince George is truly a community. We work together and play together. Yes, our winters can be cold but if you bundle up and head outside there is so much to do. I personally love our winters. There is nothing like a cold winter day with the bright blue skies and the thick frost on the trees. OK - there are other things like snowshoeing, sledding, building snowmen with our children, cross country skiing, playing hockey on the rink in our field, walking in a light snowfall, and a good old fashion snowball fight. We are truly lucky to be in a town that if you appreciate what it has to offer there are tonnes of things to do and great people to do them with. Go Canada.

Multi Tasking
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: This summer my family was at one of our fine local lakes, there was a big group of us that got together with all our families and friends. On this particular day the kids really wanted to all go tubing behind the boat, but the men in our group wanted to go fishing. So we sent the boys out fishing and we took the kids tubing, much to our surprise as we were turning into waves and bouncing the kids around a rainbow trout decided to jump into the boat, he went zinging past the drivers head and promptly landed on one of the kids laps. Needless to say when the boys came in from fishing they were quite proud of the one little fish that they caught, but it was absolutely priceless when we displayed our fish as well. Who says you can not combine sports

Kids and Sports
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: Prince George deserves the title of GamesTown 2010 due to its commitment to sports and health for all ages. The title focuses on kids because the facilities available to the kids in Prince George are fantastic....but that doesn't mean they can't be updated! We have the rotary soccer fields - where else can you see all those teams, in their different colour jerseys running and enjoying the game! We have 4 arenas in one area and two arena's in different parts of town to make sure there is enough ice for Prince George Minor Hockey, Men's Recreational League, Old Timers League, Women's League, and a BCHL and WHL team (by the way, we need more ice!) We have an outdoor ice oval not to mention countless outdoor rinks in the community. We have two pools - one with an amazing high diving board and the other with a water slide. The University has a fabulous facility with indoor soccer fields also used for baseball, an indoor track and a basketball court that can be divided into three. I am sure I haven't counted all of them in. While these can be used by kids they are also used by the residents of all ages. In fact, we have hosted the BC Senior Games - not just once but TWICE! We are a community dedicated to maintaining physical health through organized sports or recreational activities. We are your best choice - hands down!!!

Winter Olympics Birthdy Party
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: We are having a Winter Olympics Birthday party for my six year old son. We are having the kids make their own torches for a torch relay, a snowball throwing contest trying to land their snowballs in Olympic rings painted in the snow, a hockey game and sledding. The cake is going to be cupcakes decorated in the Olympic colours. The goodie bags are olympic tattoos, Canada toques, mandarin oranges, a Canada flag, red and white balloons and a candy. The kids will also create their own gold medals at the end for whatever sport they choose. The parents that stay are going to be officials and referees. We are going to make a healthy meal for lunch - a homemade whole wheat mac and cheese, a fruit tray and a veggie tray. If nothing else the kids should go home full and tired.

Prince George is THE place to be!
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: When our family was set to move here in 1972 from the Lower Mainland, my parents were told not to come - that it was a rough, unsafe place to live. We planned on living here 2 years..and it's now been 37 years! I remember that first Christmas: minus 50, but the sky was so blue it blinded you. It's the winter that actually keeps me here..the incredibly sunny days and the crisp, dry cold that makes your face tingle. Give me that any day over the gray & gloomy skies 500 miles south. I grew up with numerous choices for activities as a child - skiing at TWO (count them!) places that were RIGHT in city limits; skating at the Coliseum or the brand new Kin Centres; swimming, softball, bowling. The community got behind school productions like "Oklahoma!" and the "Music Man" and if you were more 'genteel' in nature, there were the piano lessons or singing lessons at B&B. Growing up and leaving for university didn't stop me from coming back, setting down roots with my own family. We had a wonderful baseball program for the kids, hockey and the school sports. My children have the opportunity to attend a wonderful college and a great new university that's growing all the time. I have known family and friends that have used the opportunities provided by our City's sports programs to move onwards - whether it be for world competition skiing events to playing in the NHL - or to even go elsewhere to start new sports programs in different parts of the world (who would have thought of hockey Down Under?) When our province got the wonderful opportunity of hosting the games, I immediately let family know in the States and South Africa - both have a great demand for the Canadian pins! And I cannot wait to see the torch bearers come through on the 29th of January with the wonderful celebrations later that evening. Am I proud Canadian? You bet! Am I glad to live in Prince George? I wouldn't change it for the world....

PG Proud!
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: Prince George has been home to my family for generations. There are so many things that make Prince George a great community, it's hard to know where to start. There are so many recreational facilities that there physically isn't the time to do everything that's offered here. From hiking, fishing, biking and snowboarding, this town has it all.
there is a diverse culture here, and the community knows how to celebrate its history with fantastic venues like Exploration Place, Railway Museum and Huble Homestead. There is plenty to do from checking out fantastic live shows and musicals, to relaxing at Art Space with local musicians.
We have a young child and there is so much for kids to do here. Great places like the aquatic centre have become quick favourites for our family. Plus youth sports like soccer, swimming, hockey and skating give the opportunity to introduce your child to a wolrd of physical activity and fun.
But above all the places to go, it's the people you meet in Prince George that make it such a great community. There is a such a spirit of warmth, hospitality and generousity. Prince George is a town where it's easy to make friends for life, and that's why it's such a hard place to leave, and while people often say they came here for two years, and ended up staying 20 years.
I love Prince George and there is no where else I'd rather live.
