A pool for Masset again!
Date: Dec 21, 2009
Entry: We live on the most isolated islands in Western Canada. There are few jobs, and not much to do if you don't like to hike, fish, hunt, surf, jog or hang out on the most beautiful and isolated and clean beaches in the world.
We need to have the pool opened again so that crack, cocaine and other body, spirit and mind-killing drugs don't take over completely.
Love Haida Gwaii, love Masset. Winston

Entry: I'm surrounded by high school students right now... they are crying out for a rec center. They want something constructive to do during the long, wet evenings and the options are not here. Please seed us with some rec center monies so that they and my small kids can go to town council and say, 'we are behind this project... gamestown came through with some seed money... now it's your turn'..... Howa'a ya'll from the town of Games... is that in Canada?;)

Entry: My niece was born and raised in the lower mainland. When I moved to Masset she asked several questions like whether we had a mall, a Wal-Mart, McDonalds, Starbucks, etc., etc. I said no, of course, to all of those and many more. When her dad asked her if she'd like to move here she told him she'd kill herself. My other niece visited us in Masset and rode a bike for the first time in about 10 years. She said when she returned to the city she was going to start walking in whatever forest she could find. We walked up and down the beach daily. We planned on playing tennis but ended up too busy. I know if she lived here she'd play volleyball and basketball because everyone makes the team, as opposed to the city where only the best 10 players in a grade of 400 kids makes the team. Why does Masset deserve to be voted #1? Because like many other small communities, we use the resources we have and are fantastic at it. But what makes Masset unique? It's isolation. We can't drive for an hour to the nearest Costco, swimming pool, or skating rink. Masset needs the money to provide opportunites for youth that are offered in the city or near other small communities. Yes, we are great at utilitizing what we do have, but it would sure be nice to offer options for people who move here from the city, or visit, or just for the local residents who have been without their rec centre for the past year because there isn't enough money to run it. Not only would it service Masset, but Port Clements, Tlell, and Queen Charlotte City.

Healthy living
Date: Nov 24, 2009
Entry: We live in a town with no fast food chains. Therefore our children do not get a "taste" for this garbage food. When we do travel off island, most of the kids do not want to eat at a fast food chain, the ones that choose to eat there end up feeling ill after eating. We're not used to it. I think this is great (that the kids don't want to eat there)and instead try to make healthy eating choices when out on vacation. I really like that!
Our island, Haida Gwaii, has a clause stating that there will NEVER be a fast food chain on island, ever. I am proud to support that too.
So with no fast food restaurants and no Rec. Center, we go OUT. Outside, that is. At the beach we can find crabs, clams, scallops fresh to eat. We can harvest sea weed and dead starfish for our gardens at home.
We can drive out to the back, dirt roads and go hunting deer, elk, grouse, and Canada geese to name a few. We can walk in the woods and pick fresh mushrooms, cranberries, herbs, and tea leaves.
We eat healthy and get excersise and special family bonding time while gathering food to bring home.
It is a great place to live! Viva Haida Gwaii!

rec centre
Date: Nov 11, 2009
Entry: I moved to Masset in early 08'. I was a teacher and Cadet leader in Burns Lake, B.C.. On several visits to Masset before my move one of the positive things I noticed was the great rec centre that existed at that time. It was one of the only places for kids and teens to hang out and participate in healthy activities especially in the long rainy season. Just after I moved it was closed and it has had a really negative impact on the health and well being of many, especially the teens. Hopefully we can work to support the construction of a new energy effiecient facility.

Rec centre needed
Date: Nov 9, 2009
Entry: We moved to Masset in 1997 and as a family of 4 enjoyed the use of the pool and gym at the Massett Rec Centre. With the rising cost of the ancient heating system and maintenance of the Rec centre/pool the GMDC board had to make the tough decision to close the centre and Curling Rink. Our daughter was in the Masset Eagles swim Club from the age of 7-12 yrs. Our son was in for a couple of years. They received top notch swim training for such a small community and I feel that the youth in small towns deserve something more than just hanging out on street corners waiting for trouble. We try to keep them busy with youth dances, volleyball, basketball and such but without the use of a Rec Centre it is pretty hard.
The community really pulls together in November to put on a telethon to raise money for the Lions club to distribute to things and people in need. They also donate a portion of the money raised (usually exceeding $20,000.00)to the Easter Seal House in Vancouver.
I believe Masset is a great place to live but it could be better with a Rec Centre being built.

We need a swimming pool!
Date: Nov 8, 2009
Entry: Since the closure of our Rec. Center we, the people of the community, have had to come up with alternate ways of excersing on our own. For many this is impossible because they don't know what to do on their own. They need instructions, and motivaters, and a facility to work out in safetly and properly.
I have been using the Rec. Center for the past 12 years that I have lived in Masset. I feel confident in myself to carry on on my own with what I have learned from the old Rec. Center. I have now taken up jogging outside, I bought myself and my 2 kids each a wet suit for playing in the ocean to learn to surf, I hang out with and participate in my kids' gym class at their school for extra excersise. Our community has hired a fitness instructer to hold aerobics classes at the school gym, so I go to that too.

Date: Nov 8, 2009
Entry: Since the closer of the Rec. Center there have been many dissapointed people. It used to be an attractive insentive to the new doctors and nurses coming here to live and or just work for a short time. Now with no Rec. Center it has been harder to attract people to come here. In fact when the closure of the Rec. Center happened a few families packed up and moved also. It is very sad.

We need a rec. center!
Date: Nov 8, 2009
Entry: I am a big supporter of healthy excersise. I recently quit smoking. I took up jogging.
I have been using the Rec. Center in Masset for the 12 years I have lived in Masset. I used the swimming pool, and the gym for aerobics. Then I had 2 kids. I enrolled them into swim lessons. While they were in their lessons I would play bowling, or run around in the gym while I waited for them to be done with their lessons. My oldest daughter joined swim club first. She was in it for 2 years. My youngest daughter just finished her swim lessons in June 2008 and was about to join swim club in September '08. Unfortunetly the Rec. Center closed it's doors forever in August 2008. She never got to join the swim club.
The parents of the swim club kids have joined together to hire a fitness instructer to work out with our kids for an hour a week just to keep them together as a team, and keep moving in a healthy way. We also get together and plan swim trips off island for them. We leave on the Thursday night ferry, and arrive in Prince Rupert Friday morning. We take them to the pool, and let them swim on friday, saturday and sunday morning. We have to catch the ferry from Rupert on Sunday night and arrive back home on Monday morning. It takes many days and a lot of money to do this, so we can only afford to do this 3 or 4 times a year.
Since the Rec. Center closed, the gym has been broken into by kids so they can play basketball, as the weather is cold, dark and rainy most of the time.
It's really tough on the kids and the elderly not having a place to go and excersise. The elderly used the pool for excersing as it is softer on their joints then a hard floor.

old dog learns new tricks
Date: Nov 5, 2009
Entry: I wanted to write about my partner because I am so PROUD of him! In the last year he has made some really HEALTHY changes in his life, including quitting smoking and quitting smoking pot. He started to play roller blade hockey (Masset has no ice rink so a bunch of people have gotten together and are using the concrete roller rink to play hockey and get exercise that way......People in Masset are extremely resourceful). Then he had an injury to the tendons in his left ankle that prevents him from playing hockey as much, so I bought him a wetsuit for his birthday last year and we started surfing together. He has taken to it like a shiny happy SEAL, and goes out whenever he gets the chance. He can stand on his board and is learning to carve turns on green waves....neat! He is getting into great shape, and having adventure at the same time.....and he's almost 40!! When our work schedules permit, we head out into Mamma Ocean together for a surf session, and its great to get off the couch and get outside in the winter. (I wanted to enter his story because he is a bit shy and would never think to write it down himself.) It just goes to show that you're never too old to get moving and learn something new.....

Swimming on Queen Charlotte Islands
Date: Nov 4, 2009
Entry: Since we live on an island it is very important that we learn to swim. With no recreation centre here its pretty hard to get the children their lessons, and practice time. The adults miss the only healthy, open gathering place that was available to us all. Our islands are a 7 hour ferry ride from the mainland. Some of our kids are excellent competitive swimmers, and they need a place to work that. Kids feel that they are not respected, since our old rec centre was closed abruptly, with no solid plans for its replacement. It is hard to consider the Oympics when we cannot see our way to ever producing Olympic swimmers without a pool.

What about them??
Date: Nov 2, 2009
Entry: When I was little I use to belong to swimming lessons at the pool. My mother was a busy woman, she didn't have a lot of time for me. My babysitter would take me to class and stand at the end of the lanes, scream out to me "you can do it" every time I tried to swim the length of the pool on my own. That message stuck in my head...
Today, I look at my own children, I am a busy woman, but I want to be the one standing at the end of the lane yelling out to them "you can do it!" But I can't, we have no pool.

We need our pool back
Date: Oct 31, 2009
Entry: We need our pool back. Many residents are missing the social and physical aspects of the pool. Our swim club has to travel to Prince Rupert or beyond to practice in a pool (this at a great expense to travel on the ferry and relying on it's schedule). The swim club currently is doing dry land training for the second year in order to keep fit. Having just returned from our first camp this year, it is evident that pool skills are lacking. We live around water, learning to swim and water safety is learned through swim lessons and being able to practice safely in a pool. As a parent I travelled twice weekly for the past seven years to take my children and sometimes others to swim lessons. It was very hard to return from holidays some 14 months ago and explain to your children why they could no longer go swimming, or how they were going to continue with swim club, something they were just getting into and enjoying the competitive factor and travelling off island to compete with other Northern communities. Also the schools were offering a swim program in their curriculum, as well as a summer all island swim program. The Rec Center in Prince Rupert and their swim club have been very accomodating for our club and swimmers, and are always asking how our pool situation is going. We need our pool- 4 lanes and 25 meters full of water= FUN, FIT and happy residents.

Date: Oct 28, 2009
Entry: In Masset people can find interesting things to do. All you have to do is look hard enough. My family for instance likes to go out quading and look for agates. Not only do we get out as a family but we also get away from Television and computers.
