Ladysmith and life for all ages
Date: Dec 29, 2009
Entry: I recently moved back to Ladysmith where I was born and raised, to start a family. My passion has allowed me to travel to many parts of the world: New York, Chicago, L.A., Mexico, and Europe. All of these places has something to offer a person that is committing to family life, however, Ladysmith offers a unique blend of Western Canadian Culture, for all ages. Ladysmith is a safe, vibrant, unified town that offers an unbelievable amount of activities and programs: hiking, biking and running trails, great hunting and fishing areas, community exercise activities for kids and adults at the Frank Jameson Community center, many sports teams for all ages, like baseball, football, soccer, the opportunities are endless for someone to volunteer their time to help others out in this great place I call home.
If BC is the greatest place on earth as described in one of the adds on TV and Ladysmith, I beleive, is the greatest place in BC....So, that would place Ladysmith as the Best Place in the World to live!!
Try and live here....you'll know what I'm talking about.....

Tour De Rock Fund Raiser
Date: Dec 22, 2009
Entry: My Name is Demetreos Bourodemos. My nephew, Georgios Bourodemos, was diagnosed with Leukemia (Blood Cancer) when he was 2 years old. He had to battle through 3 years of treatment that included chemotherapy, medications, multiple of tests, and injection of steroids that produced side effects like hair loss, and constant fatigue. Georgios, who is now 10 years old has conquered this deadly disease and is now Cancer free, (Full remission). WE are both trying to raise awareness and money to help in this worthy cause. Both of us are growing our hair for one year and then shaving it at the end of the 2009 Tour De Rock "Cops For Cancer" Tour in Ladysmith.
The Ladysmith community helped us raise over $14,000 in this year's Tour De Rock. THANK-YOU!!!!

Enhance Your Life Experience in Ladysmith
Date: Dec 17, 2009
Entry: Recently retired, I relocated to Ladysmith and found a picturesque and peaceful community filled with wonderful folks who share a healthy zest for life and work tirelessly to improve our quality of life. Within a short time of establishing our new home, I became very involved with the various volunteer groups and organizations that plan year round to put on events and festivals that showcase our community spirit. There is something for everyone, young or experienced. As I explain to friends and family outside of our area code, I never get bored of the serenity, the view to sea or the activities we participate in to enhance our life experience here in Ladysmith.

Ladysmith Days
Date: Nov 24, 2009
Entry: Every August long weekend, Ladysmith Celebrates "Ladysmith Days" with a parade downtown and then on the Sunday a huge celebration at Transfer Beach. This year was no exception and a big hit in our annual parade is the entry from our local volunteer Fire & Rescue Dept. This year's "firemen's calendar auditions" was hilarious. At the beach on Sunday a large emphasis is placed on kids activities and the volunteers from the ladysmith Celebrations Society had ample things for the families to keep them entertained.

partnerships
Date: Nov 24, 2009
Entry: This past May our local leadership group came up with a project to get both the Ladysmith council and the Chemainus First Nation council together and to start doing things together. It started out as a canoe paddle, with both councils, into Ladysmith Harbour to celebrate the 5th annual Ladysmith Maritime Festival. A huge success and since that first shot at it both our communities have started to participate in many events together. As neighbours we see the advantage of "being neighbours".

Halloween Howl
Date: Nov 5, 2009
Entry: This past year the Ladysmith Downtown Business Association has been busy planning numerous events and one recent successful event was the Halloween Howl. Together with the Spirit Committee the Halloween Howl and Torch Relay was a great partnership and success. Community spirit came alive downtown as ghoulish characters and their families participated in pumpkin carving and painting, trick o' treating, story readings, haunted house, and cheering on the runners as they came through town for the Olympic Torch Relay. Later on in the evening the fun continued with family entertainment and a dance. This is what community spirit is about, creating fun events for all to enjoy

Healthy Eating and Active Living in Ladysmith
Date: Jun 16, 2009
Entry: Born Healthy, a program of the Ladysmith Resources Centre Association, received Healthy Eating, Active Living funding from November 2008 to March 2009. Born Healthy used the HEAL funding to form a partnership with the Ladysmith Food Bank and to introduce families who use the Food Bank to community programs and services which support Healthy Eating and Active Living. As well, HEAL funding was used for special monthly Healthy Eating, Active Living activities at the Food Bank.
One of the Born Healthy Outreach Workers attended the Food Bank every Wednesday morning. She built rapport with Food Bank volunteers, staff and people using the Food Bank, especially those with children aged 0-6. Every Wednesday she took play dough, building blocks or crayons and paper to occupy children. She gave out pamphlets and information on all the 0-6 programs and activities occurring in the area.
Once a month, the Outreach Worker provided special activities promoting healthy eating and active living. In October moms and kids learned to make their own play dough to take home. In November, the Outreach Worker cooked zucchini muffins and handed out the recipe AND the ingredients in a bag to take home. In December she made Friendship Soup in a Jar. It was fun to watch the kids fit barley, lentils, etc. into a jar then hand it to their moms as a present. To celebrate Heart and Stroke month in February families received the HOP (Healthy Opportunities for Preschoolers) book and a kit containing a bucket, skipping rope, ribbons and more. In March families all received family swim passes and were introduced to Leisure Access Cards (a way to obtain reduced admission to Parks and Recreation programs). For our last activity, families planted tomato seeds in pots to take home.
Providing families who use the Food Bank with information regarding all the 0-6 programs has resulted in an increase in their attendance of community programs. These include Born Healthy, LaFF (a parent/child drop-in), the Ladysmith Dads Group and Strong Start. In addition families have reported that they really enjoyed the special monthly activities. Families especially appreciated receiving the swim passes. Many had not accessed the leisure centre previously and reported now being more comfortable using the facilities. In addition, families are now familiar with the Leisure Access Cards. Several families have applied for the cards and plan to use them regularly to access Parks and Recreation programs and the pool.
As a result of this project we feel that we have been able to introduce families with young children to activities and resources which they were not accessing previously. Born Healthy will continue to explore ways of partnering with the Ladysmith Food Bank and interacting with Food Bank users to continue to support Healthy Eating and Active Living.
