Diabetes and the Haisla Nation
Date: Oct 30, 2009
Entry: Last year our community got together and started a comprehensive community based program called "Diabetes and My Nation" to promote healthy living, and prevent and manage diabetes which is becoming a worldwide epidemic. We have programs for adults, youth, and school children that integrates holistic traditional activities integrated with modern medicine and sports. These include traditional dancing, canoe journeys, fishing and traditional food gathering, and variety of sports activities. We have our annual Basketball Tournaments where we mix health education with games, last tournament was supported by ActNow BC, where many of our community members took and honored the Healthy Living Pledge. The Olympic Games has inspired our community and particularly the youth to be more active and set higher goals for themselves. Today, our community is able manage diabetes in a much effective way that results in better quality of living for people with diabetes, and our kids are more aware of the need to adopt healthy lifestyle. Empowerment through knowledge, respecting traditional culture, ownership of the disease, and working together as a community is the way to overcome any challenge.
Health Awareness and Screen Gathering- Our community get together once a year to share traditional activities, traditional food, and learn from each other and health professional about healthy living, prevention and management of diabetes and other chronic diseases.
Partnership - We invite good programs such as ActNow BC to our community events to share knowledge.
Learn and share - Every year youth and elders go together on fishing trips to learn about our traditional way of living, being active, healthy lifestyle, our environment and how to respect and protect it, and also how to prevent diabetes.
Screening for diabetes and other metabolic syndrome diseases and provide one-on-one education. We invite local healthcare services and pharmacies to assist the screening program. Our elders meet twice a month to learn about diabetes management and monitor their diabetes. We invite experts in diabetes management to share their knowledge with us.
