Skiing the local slopes
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: As parents we all wait in wonder to see what direction our children will go. What will they choose as a profession? What subjects will they like or dislike in school? What sports will they play?
At 5 years of age, my son has always been more of an acedemic type, preferring to study Volcanoes of the World rather than strap on a pair of skates (so much for hockey!) This year we decided to introduce him to skiing, we live in beautiful British Columbia after all. We had been a bit hesitant to get him started for fear that he would declare his dislike, but much to our pleasure I think he has found something that he truely loves. One quick lesson with an instructor and he was off!! No fear! No hesitation! Forcing his parents (who can hold there own on a ski hill) to scramble in order to keep up. It truely has been a joy to watch the smile on his face everytime he finishes a run!
We now have a winter activity that we can enjoy as a family, with no complaints, or tears or demands to 'go home'! Even on the coldest days he's begging for us to head out to the slopes and with all the choices we have locally and a bit further a field, we truely are blessed. I myself grew up in Ontario, moved to British Columbia after I graduated University, and never looked back and it's moments like these that remind me why!!

Community of Spirit
Date: Jan 6, 2010
Entry: In 1946 I came to Kelowna with my parents and have lived in the Rutland area of Kelowna all these years.
Have watched Kelowna grow over the many years into a large caring Community. When our part of Kelowna- Rutland celebrated our 100 Centennial in 2008 the support we received from the City of Kelowna was overwhelming. We were able to receive a substanial grant to hold five major events during the year, free of charge to our visitors and they came from all over as our guest book showed: Japan, Holland, Australia, Ontario, Saskatchewan and all over the province of British Columbia. At each event we always had several of the City Councillors in attendance, Mayor Shepherd, Ron Cannan, MP and Al Horning MLA. The people of Kelowna have very caring hearts and during the two firestorms 2003 and 2009, they worked together in harmony to help those who were evacuated, provided meals, took them into their homes, looked after their pets, etc. During the years if something befalls a family, health problems, house fires, disasters of any kind, people willingly donated money, furniture, accomodations, etc. We truly are blessed to live in a Community that enjoys having visitors, many attractions, a four season playground but also helps those that live in this wonderful community.

How to meet people...
Date: Jan 6, 2010
Entry: When we moved to Kelowna a while back, I thought how can we meet people who share the same interests? I soon realized that there is a very active population here and it took no time to connect with families. This past summer, some neighbors (us included) started a mountain bike group. Now this winter, the group has changed to an inside running group. On top of all of this, I have found playground bootcamps and indoor playdate bootcamps that allow me to bring my child to the park/canter while I get my workout in- all without any additional child care money! The kids have just as much fun watching their parents exercising and stretching. They will often join us and show off for us. I think the message is very clear to our kids- mommy is taking care of herself and so should you!

Four Season Playground
Date: Jan 6, 2010
Entry: It doesn't matter what the season, Kelowna has so much to offer for fitness and fun. Winter brings everyone to the ski hills and smaller, nearby lakes for family skiing & ice-skating. Spring and Fall are perfect times of the year to enjoy walking and hiking in the great outdoors while enjoying the spectacular scenery of the mountains and lakes. Summertime is my favorite time of the year. The weather is perfect, the lakes are warm for swimming and there are a variety of sports activities going on all the time. Why would anyone want to live anyplace other than Kelowna, B.C.?

The Best Town on Earth in the Best Place on Earth!
Date: Jan 6, 2010
Entry: Friendship, fun, innovation and healthy living... it's why my family calls Kelowna home, and has for almost 18years. We are all proudly born in BC and come from families who immigrated here because it's the best place in the world to live.
Kelowna should be chosen GamesTown 2010 because our city, Kelowna, embodies the spirit of the Olympic Winter games and the athletes who will compete: talented, inspiring, spectacular!
Look no further then the gem of British Columbia, Kelowna, for your choice of the province's town that ultimately lives and breathes the Olympic Spirit!

I am so proud of our city!
Date: Jan 6, 2010
Entry: Kelowna is now going to be the home for our grandchildren who will benefit from the many opportunities of participating in the many sports that are available to our citizens and those that visit our city. Just as it was for our own children who excelled in soccer, ski racing, and tennis. It is such a difficult decision for families and individuals to decide what might be a priority sport to concentrate on, as there are so many opportunities to choose from. Kelowna is truly a four seasons playground within the province of BC. Sports Tourism is recognized by our community as an economic driver for our citizens. Kelowna continues to be committed to encouraging and expanding events and because of our leadership, our volunteerism, and our desire we have had success in hosting such events as the Summer Games, providing facilities to Olympic teams that are training from other countries, promoted triathalons, and continuing to improving facilities and training initiatives for our young and enthusiastic atheletes. Truly we are a GamesTown that is all inclusive from the young to the seniors!

What a place to live- Kelowna!
Date: Jan 5, 2010
Entry: Why does Kelowna deserve the honour of being GamesTown 2010? I have lived in Montreal, Toronto and Calgary, but since moving to Kelowna, I have never seen a place that has such spirit. Volunteers are always available to help, whether it be for amateur sports, community activities, or even volunteering to help during community disasters such as the 2003 Kelowna Mountain Park fires and the 2009 West Kelowna fires. Kelownians encourage their children and each other to live healthy lives, and to kiss goodbye to the couch potato way of living, specially as adults get older. Check out the number of adults as well as youth soccer teams, baseball teams, hockey teams, dragon boat racing teams, as well as the many sports clubs... the list goes on and on. Even our mature residents are not to be outdone, participating in Nordic walking or even just regular brisk walks on a daily basis, and indulging in such sporting activites as Tae Kwon Do at 70 years old...even skydiving at the tender age of a lot more than 39! Thanks to the encouragement of our locals, Kelowna supports all our athletes and wishes all our Olympians fabulous success in all their sports!

Kelowna for Elite Athletes
Date: Jan 5, 2010
Entry: My daughter and I moved here September, 2007 for her to train and figure skate in the Okanagan. Kelowna now has a BMO Center of Excellence, due to the hard work of many people. Consequently it is an even better place for elite skaters to come and train. While spending hours on the bleachers watching our athletes work hard on and off the ice, a group of "Moms" have now joined a gym. So....we promote "Healthy Families!!"

Land'o plenty - mountains, lakes, views!
Date: Jan 5, 2010
Entry: For New Year's eve my boyfriend rented snowshoes and took me on a trek up Postil Lake. I found a new love.....this is a fun and affordable way to get some cardio and explore the beautiful Kelowna outdoors. We rented the shoes from Outdoor Adventure Gear for just $14, a real bargain! We will definitely call the Rec center and sign up for guided tours; this way we will also meet new people and explore more terrain. We also like to hike so we go up Mission Park and Knox Mountain (he got me hiking boots as a gift). Reflexology sessions before or after going out to play sure make a difference, since Cliff spoils me I do the same for him giving him a great "Foot Rub" as his treat - what a great life!
Cheers
Laura
