Encouraging positive health habits
Date: Jan 22, 2010
Entry: Moving to Kamloops in 1992 has fulfilled my hopes of living in an area that can only be described as an outdoor playground. We have activities organized or ad lib, for every season. When people visit here they often comment about how many people are engaged in outdoor activities.
The access to indoor activities for the less outdoor adventurous types is also plentiful.Numerous sports facilities and Seniors facilities support active and healthy living.
I must commend the City of Kamloops with the vision to create partnerships with the Interior Health Authority. This has provided for the delivery of outstanding programing to support those in the community who may have health concerns, needing more specific lifestyle and activity supports.
All of this activity and positive attitude, helps to create an environment for the citizens to gain health habits that contribute to a long and productive life.
This is the kind of community that should be designated as Gamestown 2010.

Speedskaters
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: Kamloops is a wonderful city, there is so much to offer. Our speed skating club "The Kamloops Long Blades" skates in the fantastic olympic ice surface at McArthur Island Sports Center. An olympic ice surface allows our club to host national and international competitions. We hosted the North Americans Short TRack competition as the first event of the new surface. Not many other communities can boast this type of ice surface. Kamloops deserves to win

4 Seasons Community
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: Kamloops is truly a 4 season community. No matter what season, there is always something for its residents to do as participants or spectators. The list is endless, softball, hardball, slow pitch, horseshoes, lawn bowling, BMX riding, soccer, cross country, water and snow skiing, figure and speed skating, skateboarding, lacross, fishing, boating, model airplane flying, skydiving, swimming, tennis, mountain climbing, hiking, biking, football and bocchi. These are all outdoor sports. The list of indoor activities is as numerous; ball and ice hockey, curling, gymnastics, tennis, basketball, soccer, volleyball, bowing, aeorbics, and swimming. Regardless of your age if you want to be physically active there are activities for you. The format and rigorness of the activities may vary but the ultimate goal is the same to maintain a "healthier you." The geographic location of Kamloops enables teams or individuals from other locations to come here by various means of transportation. We are situated along the provincial and Trans-Canada highways. Recently the air services into Kamloops have expanded and more services are being promised. It was the historical stragatic location of Kamloops the lead to the Hudson Bay Company establishing a fur trading post here. Also the early settlers arrived here by boats.
In Kamloops we have 4 definate seasons, which enables us to have more than ample physical activities to enjoy. By participating in various sports we enlarge our circle of friends and learn different stratagies.
Thank you for considering our entry in GamesTown 2010. It would wonderful to be chosen as the winner in our category. We do have facilities but there is a constant need to improve, relocate and provide new venues as the interest arises.

Livin' the Dream
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: As a kid in 1984, I got hooked on the Olympic Games (Los Angeles). In 1988 (Calgary), my desire to be an Olympian grew. Though I didn't quite make Olympic level, I was able to strive for the goal and through that experience I discovered a passion for a healthy living lifestyle - a gift of belonging to a team, working hard (both mentally & physically) and most of all, the commitment it takes from a community to make it all happen. I was fortunate to be raised in Kamloops where we can play so freely. I adore my role as coach in this city, it is so rewarding to work with people that have true Olympic spirit.

Volunteering Is A Rewarding
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: I have volunteered at many sporting events. It is always very rewarding to be closely involved with the participants. They are most appreciative of our efforts to assist them. It is also very educational to learn about their various backgrounds and to meet them informally. I have frequently volunteered at McArthur Island on the North Shore. McArthur Island is the envy of many participants. There have been many changes to the island from the days of the holding ponds, boat launch at the furthest end, the beaver in the slough and only an arena on the land. There are now soccer fields, softball diamonds, a hardball diamond, lawn bowling court, skateboard park, a golf course and restaurant. Recently the island has undergone changes with the relocation of the tennis courts, and BM Bike track. More soccer fields are being constructed. Participants who come with self-contained mobile units appreciate the space behind the arena to park for the duration of the tournaments,
McArthur Island is the envy of many visiting teams to Kamloops. Volunteering often makes me appreciate my city more as I view our facilities through the eyes of a visitor.

Opportunity for all sports!
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: Kamloops is a great city to enjoy all sports including indoor and outdoor activities. We have so many opportunities in and around Kamloops to enjoy activity it's hard to live here and not participate in some sort of activity. The City of Kamloops has been very pro-active, especially in the past few years, to promote health and activity by building new sports factilities and maintaing our older ones to a high standard as we are the Tournament Capital! Our parks are beautiful, we've won the prestigious Communities in Bloom honor two times now. And don't let me forget our amazing Sun Peaks Resort, 45 min from downtown Kamloops which has all ammenities to enjoy year round sports. We have a huge aquatics center with an indoor track, Thompson Rivers University athletic program, and several community rec programs offered through the City and the YMCA. Did I mention that we are located on a river and also have several lakes near us for fishing, kayaking, boating etc? How about our hiking trails and cross country ski trails and our huge naturally maintained Kenna Cartwright park located within minutes from our downtown core? Ahhh all this talk about being outside makes me want to get out there!!!

Kamloops hits the bullseye everytime!
Date: Jan 6, 2010
Entry: Kamloops hits the ‘bullseye’ every time if you ask anyone from its Youth Dart Program. This alternative organized youth sport program has successfully been able to implement the Long Term Athlete Development Plan (modified to our sport), host and compete in Provincial and National Youth Dart Competitions across Canada in thanks to the generous financial support and genuine enthusiasm received from the City of Kamloops, the Kamloops Blazers Sports Society, local media and the many local business and social club sponsors (such as the ANAVets, the Moose Lodge and the Royal Canadian Legion) who support our ‘IPOD’ generation of young dart players. Kamloops players have been able to maintain a strong presence on the BC Provincial Youth Dart team and are proud to represent Kamloops and BC when faced against our National youth competitors. To travel and experience the culture in all of the other Canadian Provinces while making new friends and competing in a sport that you love is a great thing for these youth competitors. In 2007 Kamloops youth players struggled to raise funds to travel and compete at the Canadian Nationals in Quebec – when we thought there was no hope of meeting our goal, the generosity and support of our community hit the bullseye once again and the players were able to meet their financial goals and compete they did, bringing home the GOLD medal to B.C. from the Canadian Nationals. The precedence was set and the success stories and medals have continued to make their way back to the west coast each year that has followed. Kamloops youth dart players are leaders in their sport and thrive with the ongoing support from this exceptional community. Although some do not see darts as a sport - ask any dart player and they have another view. We even made the front page of the Sports section thanks to Dave Eagles and KTW! The ongoing media coverage of our small group of young athletes shows the level of importance of all its community member's achievements to active healthy living within our great community. Congratulations Kamloops on making the Top 10! It’s all about the numbers for us and you will always be our #1.

Date: Jan 6, 2010
Entry: My wife and I are seniors and have been going to the leisure pool in the Tournament Capital Centre. We were so impressed after a few visits that we got permission to take some pictures which we sent to family members in Montreal, Vancouver and Edmonton. We bragged about the wonderful facilities and all had to admit that it was much better than anything they had in their Cities. We are proud of Kamloops.

So much to do, so little time!
Date: Jan 5, 2010
Entry: I moved to Kamloops in 1980, and absolutely love it. Besides the super friendly people, there is so much to do. Parks to play in, walking and hiking areas, a "bike ranch" for novice and competitive mountain bikers, golf courses for every level, Sun Peaks and Harper Mountain Ski areas. Lakes and rivers to swim, and inner tube in. And in my 40's I joined the Kamloops Run Club, and with their support ran 2 half marathons! The club also stages it's own charity runs every April and June/July, and takes part in other groups run -- it's about supporting the community! My husband golfs and curls, and my son bikes and plays hockey. We all have our thing! This is a great place to live, work, and recreate. It has the best weather of ANYWHERE in the country! Besides running, and walking my dog, I love to garden too!

It really is the best
Date: Jan 4, 2010
Entry: Often we have had the opportunity to leave and live elsewhere but we keep coming back to the fact that we can recreate so readily in Kamloops. All of the sports we love in particular golf and skiing are right in our backyard. We have no need to vacation anywhere if we do not want. The best part is that our friends all feel the same way and we are never bored. It is a great place that encourages a healthy lifestyle!

Date: Jan 4, 2010
Entry: I would like to take this opportunity to thank the city, staff, trainers, sponsors and volunteers for making this community a wonderful place to live, raise children and be active. From the planning that goes into supporting programs for preschool children to the free activates and programming for seniors, this community has thought of it all. The TCC facility and the programs offered are a wonderful addition to the abundant outdoor activities that are available. The city and staff continue to be inventive and think outside the box with things such as installing outdoor gyms at city parks, offering free programs and are striving to make Kamloops a truly vibrant, accessible, active place to live.

You name the sport - KAMLOOPS HAS IT ALL!
Date: Jan 4, 2010
Entry: My husband and I moved here 20 years ago from a youthful and vibrant Ft McMurray Alberta where sport plays a huge part in healthy Northern living. We were pleasantly surprised to find Kamloops wasn't a sleepy retirement town at all - it too offered much to it's active community. We've raised 2 athletic kids here in Kamloops and hope that we've instilled a healthy active lifestyle that they will take with them for life. They were able to try out any sport that they could imagine...I don't think there is a sport or a club that isn't represented in this town. The 2002 Olympics allowed us to discover that Kamloops has a great speed skating club - the Kamloops Long Blades....who knew speed skating could exist in 'small town' BC. We were thrilled and have enjoyed every aspect that the sport has provided for our kids and lifestyle. We love Kamloops - the great people that we have met through sport - now lifelong friends connected by a town, connected by sport. Best of luck to Kamloops - you are a winner!
