Houston has its own version of Olympic fever!

Entry: If one could compare the thrill of Gamestown fever in Houston to Vancouver the day before the Olympics were announced, I think there would be a huge similarity!! I was living in the Lower Mainland during the time that Vancouver was vying to be 'the city' that would host the 2010 Winter Olymics. For months, organizers had preparations underway, events were being held, but it really didn't seem to affect the normal day to day lives of average citizens, until.... in the last few weeks leading up to the final contenders and then... the final announcement, the city came alive! Suddenly, WE, Vancouver, meant something, we finally saw what the world saw in us, for what we were, not what we had thought we were, and we began to believe in ourselves!! The excitement has only been building and soon, very soon, the world will come to Vancouver!!
This is exactly how I feel tonight, in Houston, on the last day of the public input for Gamestown 2010! Houston has always been a town that could come together, to get a job done, when that job was worth doing. There are no words to describe the pride that I feel for my friends and neighbours, the family we call community... this is the heart of Houston, telling you just what its all about!! Unlike Vancouver being confirmed by the outside world of who they were and what their value was, we, the community of Houston, have spoken the words ourselves!!
This is the spirit of the north, the spirit of the Pleasant Valley, the spirit of HOUSTON!!

Parade of Athletes

Entry: One of our Spirit events for Houston was a Parade of Athletes. We invited all the athletic clubs and organizations to participate in a Parade of Athletes to celebrate how active Houston is. We had close to 200 people, young and old, on the ice just to celebrate being active!! Holding this event on a Sunday afternoon meant it did not include all the people who are active on the many sports teams organized through the schools! Houston is Gamestown 2010!!

Houston Figure Skating Club Annual Carnival!

Entry: In the spring Houston is treated to the annual figure skating carnival put on by the HFS Club. Its' one of their major fundraisers each year, it shows off all the skills the skaters have mastered throughout the year!
I am not sure how many years it has been held, but the pictures I've attached are when my kids were small 10 years ago or so. I know it was an annual event for several years before that and the HFSC still hosts their annual carnival to this day. This is one of our towns events that the whole community looks forward to every spring! It' a large production that requires alot of volunteer hours by the skaters and their parents before the show can go on. It's so popular that the club has to put on an afternoon and an evening performance so everybody who wants to can see it. The skaters love putting on the show and we love watching!

Entry: Our Nordic ski club has doubled it's membership over the past 2 years by offering a half price deal for new skiers. What a great way to get out and exercise on our world class trails with bar none, the best scenery in the province!

Pleasant Valley Days -Barrel Racing

Entry: In conjunction with the BC Barrel Racing Association, the Pleasant Valley Horse Club is host to a major barrel racing competition on the May long weekend, during Pleasant Valley Days. In all, the PVHC is said to be expecting up to 100 riders in all their events this coming year!! That's a lot of horsepower!!
Not to forget (sorry, no pictures), there will be the highly anticipated chuck wagon races again, and there are hopes that up to 35 wagon teams may attend!!
