Entry: During the Thanksgiving break, I came home from university with my girlfriend. My brothers and I took her to the Palisade bluffs on a gorgeous fall day. Coming from the lower mainland, she really appreciated the beauty of this area. While it was a bit cold, we all enjoyed the hike.

When the world comes to Vancouver,
Date: Nov 13, 2009
Entry: ... we're ready to celebrate!!
Thanks to generous funding, our arena has been fitted with a giant roll-down screen. Officially a 'livesites' location, Houston residents can now participate in the excitement and celebrations of the opening and closing ceremonies of the Vancouver 2010 Olympics!!
Local events are already being planned around these celebrations, making every opportunity available to be as close to the action as possible, for those who cannot be in Vancouver itself. (You know its an important thing when our local hockey associations have offered to give up ice time for the celebrations!!)
When the world comes to Vancouver, Houston's gonna party!!

more art about town...
Date: Nov 13, 2009
Entry: When one of our local 'rodeo boys' won his second Canadian title as a bull rider, a Houston resident took it upon himself to commission a statue to celebrate this young man's victories and show the community's pride in the success of 'one of our own'. In doing so, the 'Robby Bell Bull' was born. Dedicated in January 2002, this lifesized chainsaw carving stands at the corner of Highway 16 and Copeland Ave, almost directly across from the infamous flyrod.
Come see for yourself, what grit and passion looks like up close!! That's what they call the rodeo!

Team spirit
Date: Nov 9, 2009
Entry: Im a 1st time hockey parent of two this year..one child in the Atoms division and the other in the Bantoms division, and I was overly impressed with the kids in the Houston Minor Hockey Assocation. The kids are so dedicated and the way they pull together and play as a team. I envy my new Bantom son for entering hockey at such a late stage...his otherteam mates have been playing since they were like 5 years old. And due to the fact my 15 year old didn't know how to skate backwards nor stop...his team mates pulled together and went out of their way to help my son and encouraged him, as he advanced into skating backwards faster, all his team mates banged their sticks on the ice for encouragement..I felt so proud for my son to be on such a great team. He scored his 1st goal this weekend and they all jumped on the ice and jumped on him that is how great these kids are! For a child at the age of 15 in our rural area that we live in, drinking is a big issue here and hockey is all they have pretty much. And I am so glad I registered my boys in hockey this year and to be with such a great group of kids! My Atom boy has wanted to be in hockey since he was 5 years old. The kids here in Houston walk around with hockey sticks and you always see kids playing road hockey to get better skills...our arena is always full from the time its open til the time it closes and sometimes the caretaker has to force people out...it would be an honour to get this upgrade to our local arena! I am a proud hockey mom and it is a great honour to be part of the Houston Minor Hockey Assocation!

Leadership in Sports
Date: Nov 3, 2009
Entry: Each September, Houston Secondary School hosts a senior girls and a junior girls invitational tournament. It is always over subscribed because the organization and community participation is so good. The tournaments are used as venues for referee certification and also as training opportunities for youth to give back to their sport. There are formal opening ceremonies with a prayer and the singing of O Canada. Teams make banners at the event and every participant receives a photo of their team and banner, ribbons or medals, a rosette and an enlarged team photo. These two weekends set the standards of sportsmanship and participation for the entire season.
