Carolfest 2009
Date: Dec 17, 2009
Entry: As the director of the Twain Sullivan Carolfest choir, 2009, I can not begin to describe how pleased I am of the 48 children (Gr 4-7) who chose to spend their entire lunch hour twice a week for a month, in order to prepare for School District 54's annual 'Carolfest'. For these children to prepare and perform a Christmas favourite as an individual school, as well as 3 pieces to be performed with the massed choir (of over 400 voices) in such a short time, proves their desire to give of themselves and share the gift of music to their community. The piece they sang as an individual school, was from the Grinch... 'Where are you Christmas?' A lovely rendition of sweet elementary voices, accompanied by piano, these kids gained the approval and tremendous appreciation of their peers and the audience.
Thank you Kids! See you again next year!!

Carolfest 2009
Date: Dec 16, 2009
Entry: Every year, for the past 30 years, School District 54 has hosted a most spectacular seasonal musical event called 'Carolfest'. Each of the 8 schools in our district prepares a musical Christmas favourite to perform individually, as well as a number of Christmas pieces to perform as a choir, en masse. As whole day event, the Carolfest performers are picked up by bus to travel to the larger of the two secondary schools (which for HSS happens to be in the neighbouring town an hour away), spending the entire afternoon rehearsing, with a short break with an alternate activity, then two evening performances. The masse choir is the highlight of the day, with just over 400 voices, from Grades 4-12, accompanied by the concert band from the host secondary school, the experience is short of breath-taking. The HSS Choir performed their individual piece, 'God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen' in Renaissance style, accompanied by alto recorder, piano basso continuo, and hand drum. As part of a brand new music program, these proud young people performed to their own highest standard and were hugely appreciated by their peers and the audience alike!!
Way to go, you made us very proud!!

Generosity Abounds
Date: Dec 16, 2009
Entry: Without the help of kind and generous patrons, HPL would have to do without a lot of stuff. But people in Houston are generous and always willing to help out where and when they can. Two crafty citizens donated a beautiful hand-made quilt to help raise funds for our great little library.

QUILTS of Love
Date: Dec 15, 2009
Entry: The Houston GEMS girls made these quilts with their Counselor and donated them to the Houston Community Services. Most of the 11 girls had never used a sewing machine, so this was a learning opportunity as well as learning how to give of themselves to help others. We met every other Thursday from November to March and completed 4 small childrens size quilts made from warm cozy flannel.

SOUPS ON!
Date: Dec 15, 2009
Entry: The Houston GEMS Girls Club gives back to their Community. Because our Community is always so supportive and generous to the GEMS fund raising efforts for Zambia, Africa, the Club decided to give something back to their community. The girls and Counselors held a SOUP FEST. They served 23 different kinds of home made soup, home made buns and brownies. Dinner was by donation and you could have as many bowls of soup as you wanted. The girls helped to set up, serve soup, clear tables, collect donations and wash a ton of dishes. The turn out from our community was overwhelming. They had enough soup for everyone and they raised $ 1,725.00 for the Houston Community Services and the Salvation Army Food Bank. Houston GEMS is part of GEMS International and you can find out more at

Garden inspires Africans too
Date: Dec 14, 2009
Entry: One of the most exciting programs I have been able to be involved in is the Community Garden run by Houston Link to Learning. Produce there goes to feed over 30 families as well as provides fresh produce to people accessing the Salvation Army Food Bank and raising money to put back in to the garden at the Community Market. But one of the greatest pleasures for me was the opportunity to share my new found love of gardening with my collegues at the A Rocha Uganda initiative in Uganda, East Africa in January. As we sat brainstorming projects they could do I suggested planting a garden to showcase how even with a little bit of land people could provide healthy food for their families and contribute to the conservation of the earth. Much to my surprise my friend Robert phoned me up the next week and said, "So when are you coming to help us get the garden ready?" We were only there for a few weeks so I arranged to go back and visit the A Rocha centre there the following monday to do what I could to help. Long story short I just got an email from my friends in East Africa saying they have just enjoyed their first meal of spinach from the A Rocha garden. See, when we act locally it helps globally as well. Who'd have know Houston's Community Garden would inspire people half way around the world! Great work HLL! I am proud to be a part of the garden.

Huckleberries galore!
Date: Dec 14, 2009
Entry: This year was the first year I picked huckleberries in the Houston area. I admit I have a bit of a sweet tooth and the huckleberries I had had before seemed a bit to sour for my liking. But after a bucket full of huge, sweet berries came back in the hands of my blue faced children (I'm not sure if they got more in their bucket or more in their face) I was hooked. We went out several times and enjoyed a day out in the sunshine, enjoying the birds and creatures of our area while picking delicious huckleberries to put away for the winter. As I sit amidst -30C weather, watching the waxwings strip the berries off my mountain ash tree I think back to the warm moments in the summer when our family descended on a huckleberry patch and I say a word of silent thanks to the Creator for such fruitful abundance right in my own back yard! I love Houston!

Spirit of BC festival, opening ceremonies (part 7)
Date: Dec 13, 2009
Entry: The final photo of the Parade of Athletes...
the Pleasant Valley Horse Club, some members of the Karate school...
Some of the other clubs that were not present at the parade include the Cross Country ski club, the local recreation hockey club, the Curling club, the TaeKwonDo school, our summer sporting groups (soccer, baseball, slowpitch), the army cadets biathlon team, and the school sporting programs. Even though these clubs were not directly present, many of the children and adults involved participate in more than one sport in town!!
One thing is clear, we are proud of our athletes, and the community supports them completely!!

Spirit of BC festival, opening ceremonies (part 1)
Date: Dec 13, 2009
Entry: In February 2009, the Houston Spirit of BC Committee decided to host a Spirit of BC Festival, in conjunction with the official countdown to the Olympics. The opening ceremonies of our festival consisted of a unique opportunity in which all the sporting groups from the community were invited to join us in a parade of athletes at our arena.
It was very exciting to see many of the clubs at one venue and recognize them as a vital part of our community. Even greater was the recognition of the hundreds of hours of volunteer time that it takes parents and other interested adults to organize, coach and, most importantly, encourage our young people to participate!!! In a community as small as Houston, the sheer numbers of youth involved in recreational sporting activities is incredible!!
The pictures in the following posts on give a sampling of the activities that Houston has to offer and the people involved... As one can well imagine, in the middle of February, in a serious winter activity town, its hard to have everyone in one place at one time, on the day of the event there were no less than 6 other clubs not represented due to commitments to participate in sporting competitions in other communities!!
To close off the opening ceremonies, and to kick off the week of other related events (pictures can be found at the earlier on the Houston page), guests were treated to a typical Houston Sunday afternoon favourite, A LUCKIES GAME!!
