Summer in the back yard resort

Entry: Last Summer we spent every day splish splashing in the toddler pool in the back yard. Our little guy's shrieks of laughter are contagious. We also spent a lot of time digging in the dirt weeding the veggies - mostly we grazed on raspberries and sweet peas. It's so nice having your own fresh produce - and if you don't have your own garden there's lots of fresh produce at our farmer's market.

Houstonites were up to the Challenge at the Houston Leisure Facility in 2009!
Date: Jan 3, 2010
Entry: The year 2009 saw 23 Houston residents sign up to swim one of 2 distance challenges in the lane pool at
the Houston Leisure Faciliy. Challengers chose to swim the length of one of two local scenic waterways, the Bulkley River (250km) or Babine Lake (153 km). At the end of the year 3 swimmers were successful in completing the distance of the Bulkley River and 5 were successful in swimming the length of Babine Lake. The total distance swam by all 23 challengers was 2,244.76 km, that is more than the distance from Houston to Vancouver and back. Isn't that wonderful in the year leading up to Vancouver 2010 Olympics!
Congratulations to everyone who took part in the 2009 swim challenge at the Houston Leisure Facility you definitely are making healthy living choices!

Entry: As the community of Houston is avid in the outdoor activities, we provide a special service for our truly energenic outdoor's people. During hunting season, we provide custom cutting and wrapping of domestic game. Whatever have you....geese,moose,deer,etc.During off season, we provide cooler services for what have you, such as cooling of beverages for benefit dances/auctions for people in need in our community. All you have to do is ask, and we're there for our Houston.

Boxing Day snowmobiling in Babine Mountain Range

Entry: Boxing Day 2009- Cindy and Murray Sullivan awoke to sunny clear blue skies and headed out for the mountains on our snowmobiles. We came over the top of this mountain and spotted a herd of mountain goats. Thank goodness I brought my camera! Took alot of awesome photos and this particular goat was definately a poser.

Entry: Silverthorne lake is less than a fifteen minute drive from town.What a great place to picnic,read a book,camp,go for a long walk,kayak,canoe or just relax. This truly is one of the many hidden treasures in the Houston area.Enjoy it as often as you can.

Teachers vs. Grads Hockey Game

Entry: The annual game between the teachers and the grads was an outstanding success once again. The game takes place yearly just before the Chirstmas break. The game tends to be a fun exciting one with lots of participants on both sides. This year's game was won by the grads.

Entry: The Houston Leisure Facility offers Seniors Aquafit 3 times a week for 45 minutes. This popular program sometimes has up to 30 Senior participants. Aquafit Instructors take participants through a warm up, a cardio segment and strength training. This great program gets local seniors out and active!

Houston Tier 4 Midget Championships

Entry: The Houston Midget Hockey Team were asked to host the Tier 4 Championships in December of 2008 with only 3 1/2 months to go til they were played after another town were not able to. The 5 person committee that organized the tournament did an awesome job in this short amount of time. The week long tournament started off with injuries to players on the Houston team including the starting goalie for the week. The teams backup Bantam goalie played the rest of the week and did awesome! As the games for Houston went on, the town was behind the team cheering all the way loudly(almost deafening)! Houston ended the tournament with a 4-2 record which was great for our MIdget Team.

Houston Rugby

Entry: The Houston Rugby team has come along in great strides in the last 2 years. The volunteer coaches have taught the kids right from raw rookies to very serious players. The team has gone far to play the game when they played in the snow in Edson Alberta. This past May the kids who have been in the program from the start achieved the highest level they could reach by being crowned North-Central Champions.

Entry: We had great weather and a fantastic day to hold our annual winter carnival! We had snow bowling, skiing, snow shoeing, horse drawn sleigh ride and so much more! A great time was had by all and they all filled up on hot dogs and hot chocolate!

Entry: Looking back at all the posts that my friends and neighbours have put on this website, I have to say that when it comes to community sports, Houston is definitely a winter town!! And for all the right reasons!! Not only do we have 6 months of winter, filled with organized sports from top notch hockey to fantastic cross country skiing and everything in between, but we have excellent winter recreational opportunities as well... from ice fishing to snowmobiling (even building snowmen)!!
Some might say our summer sports are lacking in comparison, but if you look at the pictures and read our stories, you're certain to know why... everyone's playing outside already!!
Come and visit, enjoy Houston in any season!!

These are the words I heard in the hallway during a lunch hour at Silverthorn Elementary school the other day.
Then another (adult) voice from some dark classroom, questioned "What are you doing in during lunch, shouldn't you be out on the playground?"
"No, we are going to each classroom, collecting all of the recycling."
Wow! That's impressive!! What an example to follow, the green footsteps of a child!
