Girls Minor Ball
Date: Jan 4, 2010
Entry: We are truly a games town! When the arena close on April 1st we look to other sports. Once the snow melts and the fields dry my daughter signs up for the local girls ball. In July 2009 we were quite excited to go to Cloverdale and play at the Pee Wee Girls Provincials, Coming from a small town with not to many players to pick from we thought we did pretty good coming in sixth out of 16 teams. Go Houston Valley Cats!! We'll be back next year.

Pleasant Valley Singers
Date: Jan 4, 2010
Entry: It has been a great pleasure to sing with and accompany Houston's unofficial namesake choir!! What started out as a couple of ladies 'getting together' occasionally to sing some fun classical music has become a committed group of 9 women who meet once a week, sing, laugh, and have a great time making music. Informal as their beginnings were, they have now been invited to sing at most of our major public events, including singing the national anthem at the Spirit of BC festival's 'Countdown to the Olympics' in February 2009 and their accompanist's arrangement of 'Flander's Fields' for Remembrance Day, 2009. Self directed and managed, these ladies sing with a quality that can be found in any of the major centres!!
Starting soon, this group of Chantreuses will open their practice to include male singers as we begin preparations for performing Handel's famous "Messiah" with neighbouring communities in the Christmas season, 2010!!

Having a Ball!!
Date: Jan 4, 2010
Entry: So was the name of an activity program for preschoolers hosted by the District of Houston!!
For 8 weeks, this group of energetic kids ran around the community hall, wearing off energy and learning some basic skills of ball sports usually considered for older ages!! An introduction to lacrosse (with plastic sticks and sponge balls), volleyball (using balloons), bowling (with recycled pop bottles and oversized tennis balls), tennis (with junior rackets and real balls), basketball (we have some stars on our hands) and SOCCER (yah, that was a real highlight, but these kids were GOOD!!, they taught the teacher a few tricks!!) Not to mention a little bit of juggling and a few hackey-sack tricks!!

Youth with a heart!
Date: Jan 4, 2010
Entry: Every year for the last 5 years, one of our talented young ladies in town puts her passion for music on display and shares not only her gifts to the community, but showcases her friends in a class A recital, and donates the funds raised to charities that help other children, such as the Children's Hospital!! The musical lineup for the 2009 concert consisted of everything from classical piano and violin to musical theatre (vocal), and has in the past included drama, classical singing, and recorder!!
The recital is of such quality that usually the children perform to a full house!! Its amazing to see what talent lies in such a small community!!

scenery
Date: Jan 4, 2010
Entry: i lived in Houston off and on over the last twenty-seven years. I have found the scenery in this area to be the most remarkable of any other community. The mountain ranges all around is breath taking not to mention the forests. In the spring watching the new growth unfold and snow leaves the mountains, its remarkable. This area abounds with all kinds of wild life and they, mostly deer and moose will find there way into town. In spring you watch canada geese wending their way north and then again in the fall I see them heading south thousands of them. I often watch as they make circles in the sky forming their v pattern and are then gone and I often feel sad for them. Recreation of course is no.1 here. Houston is a working community and has a lot going for it.
