Date: Jan 5, 2010
Entry: My children have played baseball on a local Houston Baseball league for the last few years. The league is the vision & action of many adult volunteers caring for thier children & the communitys health and well being. This is enjoyed by well over 100 local youth for 8 weeks every spring.

Supporting our seniors
Date: Jan 5, 2010
Entry: It is such a delight to watch the seniors come to the pool for the Senior Fitness class. They are such a vibrant group, the size of which is growing weekly. All of them are laughing and joking around as they work out. It won't be long before I am able to join them. I truly look forward to growing older in this community.

Skiing with my pals
Date: Jan 5, 2010
Entry: What a glorious day to ski at the local trails! My friends convinced me that it reallly wasn't THAT cold and off we went. Bright blue sky, green trees loaded with white mounds of snow, and red pine grosbeaks cheering us on as we glided through the trails. Living up here is the BEST.

Olympic Spirit
Date: Jan 5, 2010
Entry: Here's a funny story...our family had been debating the men's hockey team selection for weeks. I, sadly, had to work the morning of our men's olympic hockey roster unveiling. I met my boyfriend for dinner at my parents that evening (having forgotten by then about the team.) My mom, dad & b-friend all had print-outs from DIFFERENT LOCAL BUSINESS' in town of the roster...what town has so much Olympic spirit that, not just one, but several business' handed out copies of our Canadian athletes? We all had a good laugh...and I didn't have to pull myself away from the World Juniors to find out who the team was. Aye Oh Canada Go!!!

GTing at the microwave
Date: Jan 5, 2010
Entry: We have Mount Harry Davis there is a microwave tower located at the top of the mountain, the road up is steep and windy there is not alot of traffic so it is perfect to take kids or adults of all ages Gting they can ride on the road or take several power line runs to the bottom. The run down on the GT is about a 10 minute ride and if your child is to young to do it on their own, then they get to double with a lucky adult. It is so much fun. We have been doing it for years and we never get tired of it. I think we're so lucky to live in a community like Houston.

I LOVE HOUSTON
Date: Jan 5, 2010
Entry: I came here 1st in 1984 as a tree planter, then returned year after year for work. I keep returning to this town because of how friendly it is; I always feel at home here. The weather is way better than our neighbouring communities! We have invested heavily in recreation - Houston has the best pool in the north; awesome Cross country skiing, snow shoeing, an excellent arena with the best ice across the north, excellent trails and hundreds of lakes and rivers to kick back and enjoy whatever water is best for - water skiing, fishing, swimming or exploring.

Olympics Volunteer
Date: Jan 5, 2010
Entry: I volunteered for the Olympics and was accepted and given the role of Marshal of the Moguls and Freestyle events at Cypress Mountain. I am really excited about the opportunity and appreciate that the Houston Council has agreed to let me take the month of February off from my job as CAO to fulfill my obligations. I will be taking vacation and leave without pay, and the District is in no way using taxpayers' money to enable me to volunteer. I have my red mittens, purchased locally at Fields. I will be able to participate in the Olympic Torch event here in Houston January 30th just before leaving for my training and accreditation in Vancouver. Its a once in a lifetime event that I will cherish forever.

Entry: Houston is a small town with drive. When we heard we were in 3rd place, everyone sprung to action. Emails were in a flurry - one person alone decided that 100 votes were not too much. From 3rd to 1st in less than a day! Wow; this is a town that cares!

Winter wonderland.
Date: Jan 5, 2010
Entry: I lived in Houston for 33 years and enjoyed nearly every minute of it. I worked in the bush and felt very privileged to be able enjoy the scenery and get paid for it. I took up back country skiing 8 or 10 years ago and particularly enjoyed the Dungate Meadows area. We shared the meadows with snowmobilers and made good use of the trails packed down by their machines. I skied most weekends of the winter months.
After the leisure center was built my wife and I enjoyed it as much as we could and I took the challenge in '08 to swim to Smithers and back.
I also enjoyed hiking but didn't do this as often as I would have liked to. I think the mountains, valleys, rivers, and lakes around Houston make it an ideal place to live, and it has something for everyone who likes the great outdoors.

Life in Houston
Date: Jan 5, 2010
Entry: We used to live in Harrison Hot Springs and before that in Port Moody. Compared to the dreary rainy winters in the lower mainland, the crisp clear winter days and nights of Houston are a welcome change. Having lived in Whitehorse we knew just what to do. Bundle up, strap on some skis or snowshoes and get out there, which is exactly what my wife and I have been doing. Right out our back door! The snow stays white and peoples spirits bright. What a great place to live.

Walking to work
Date: Jan 5, 2010
Entry: I've been walking to work for the last three months, through all kinds of weather and it has been a great experience. I cross paths with deer on a regular basis plus anyone else out walking always has a cheery greeting. The exercise does me good and I'm contributing less green house gas emissions by leaving the vehicle at home. I've seen some spectacular sunrises and gotten used to waking a half hour earlier to make time for the walk. There are trails to follow so I'm not competing with vehicles for space. What a great community!

First Step Fitness
Date: Jan 5, 2010
Entry: I started walking for 1/2 hour a day in June but as the winter winds started to fly I started to whimp out. You see I've struggled with being out of shape for my whole life and this year I thought I'd do something different for a change. This year I'd start exercising. You can imagine my delight then when First Step Fitness opened it's doors in the old Elks Hall in Houston. The instructor is excellent, the classes affordable and the workout invigorating. Let the winds and snow fly. I'm getting fit and feeling good!

Houston CRC goes green
Date: Jan 5, 2010
Entry: Winner of the Green Congregation grant for 2008 from the denominational office of social justice Houston Christian Reformed church dug up a 50x50 plot of church property and created a community garden. In the first year (2009) it fed 5 families including a refugee family and several families struggling to make ends meet because of cut backs at the local Saw mill. It is hoped that more community members are able to participate next year and grow their own vegetables, feed their families and reduce green house gas emissions in Houston. Go Green Houston!

Fulton River Spawning Channels are the largest in the world
Date: Jan 5, 2010
Entry: Salmon is such a huge part of life in Houston and what would a summer be without a trip to the largest spawning channels in the world. Less than an hours drive from Houston towards Granisle, B.C. is the Fulton River Spawning Channel projects. What a great place to take the kids, shoot some photos and learn about the environment in which we live.

There's a Salmon in my Classroom
Date: Jan 5, 2010
Entry: "There's a Salmon in my classroom, she lives just down the hall. When she came to be here she was very very small"
Combining a love of photography, nature, poetry, teaching and my children I decided to write a book this summer. Inspired by the Houston author of the book Blackberry I thought...if she can do it, so can I. It was so much fun and the kids at Houston Christian school loved seeing pictures of themselves, their teachers and their field trip to the Fulton River Spawning Beds in their very own book. Now to get it published...

Butterflies under the cherry tree
Date: Jan 5, 2010
Entry: No that's not the name of a romance novel. But it is what we found in our Houston front yard this summer. One of our favorite activities in the summer is to spend time exploring outside. We didn't have to go far to share a moment with this Mourning Cloak butterfly since it decided that right underneath our cherry tree would be a good place to hang out for a while.
