Houston is Breathtaking!!
Date: Jan 5, 2010
Entry: Houston has so much to offer to those who choose to call this great town home and to those who just stop by for a visit. Houston has to be one of the friendliest communities I have ever had the pleasure of living in. The people work together to support our youth in all of the sports we can possibly fit into a season. The scenery is breathtaking when we go a few miles up the road to snowmobile in the meadows. Houston really is a great community and it deserves to hold the title Gamestown 2010. Please vote for us!!!!!

Volunteerism
Date: Jan 5, 2010
Entry: The volunteers and clubs in Houston are unbelievable. Here is a story why the people in Houston are amazing.
It was a beautiful winter day on January 2,2010. As a family we decided to load our snowmobiles and head off to the " Meadows ". We were only going out for a couple of hours so not alot of preparation was done. We were enjoying the beautiful scenery on the beautiful groomed trails that the Houston Snowmobile Club has maintained when we met up with some locals. We chatted with them for a few moments and headed off our seperate ways. A few kilometers down the trail my husbands snowmobile broke down. We tried to get it going but no luck. So my family ( 2 children ages 8 & 10) myself and my husband all loaded up on my snowmobile. We drove approximately 13 km when my snowmobile's engine blew up. We decided that we needed to leave the machine as there were many wildlife trails all around us. We took the hood off the snowmobile to use it as a toboggan for our children. We then left the scene and started walking up the trail. Night time became on us so we decided to make a shelter. We gathered pine tree branches to protect us from the wind. We used the snowmobile's hood as a shovel and began shovelling a hole for a shelter. We started a small fire to keep our children warm. I had a feeling that it might be a long night. Well little did I know down at the parking lot two members of the Houston snowmonile club were dropping off a piece of equipment for the trails. The one member seen our truck and decided to give one of my husband's friends a call. That phone call lead to two of our friends driving out to the parking lot to check the cabin to see if we were staying the night. When they arrived at the cabin they seen that we were not there. They walked out of the trail got into their vehicle and drove to closest cell range to make a call to my father in law and too the member that seen our vehicle. This lead to my sister in law calling another member of the Houston Snowmobile club. This member had leant his snowmobiles out that day to friends that were also at the meadows that day. Little did we know that the locals that we met up with earlier that day had his machines. That member gave a few phone calls and found out where we were last seen at. With this information my in laws got into there vehicle and drove into town and out to the meadows. When they arrived at the parking lot they were amazed on how organized the Houston Snowmobile Club were. They had machines in two's going out already. Too make a long story short we were rescued by The Houston Snowmobile Club within a 2 hour period. When arriving back at the parking lot we were greeted with a lot of hugs and thoughts a big fire at the cabin to keep us warm whereever we were. Houstonites are the most caring and understanding people out there. They always work together in situations good and bad . This is why Houston should be Gamestown 2010.

100 Mile Diet? Not here!!
Date: Jan 5, 2010
Entry: About 50 years before it became the trendiest culinary catch word, 'eat local' was a part of the fabric of community life in Houston. 100 miles from nowhere, if you didn't grow your own vegetables, you knew a neighbour who did, and if they didn't raise chickens, the lady down the road had eggs for sale, and if she didn't have extra fresh milk, the family just at the edge of town might just have enough for a couple more families...
today, our food gets trucked in from all over the world, but the unique mixed cultural heritage of our community still takes pride in growing what grandpa did, even if he did it somewhere else in the world!! The season here is short, but things grow quickly in the long summer days, and wild food is always in abundance... yes, there's a little more work and a lot more love, but its all worth it on your plate in the end!!
Does the 100 mile diet work here? No way, try the backyard!!

Entry: As a parent of two young boys, I would like to say "Thank You" to those volunteers who give their time, patience, and energy to the many sporting activities and clubs in Houston. Without the volunteers, these clubs/teams would not exist. Seeing how others give of themselves only to be rewarded by the kids' smiles and personal achievements is amazing.
