Juvenile Curling Team

Entry: This curling team participated in the Northern Winter for four years. The boys won a bronze and silver metal at the games. The boys used thus experience to help gain life skills. They have continued to be progressive in facing the future. One is in university, two are mechanic apprentices and one has entered the forest workforce.

Entry: Houston is a great little community which allows us to enjoy may types of recreation from an early age. My nephew was visiting one summer, and he was amazed with all of the things that we had time to do including camping, fishing, hiking, swimming, and biking. He was very found of my son's little motor-bike which they took turns riding in an empty parking lot.

Entry: Community spirit is a big thing in Houston. It all starts in the local schools, where the children are encouraged to think about how they can help their fellow students, the school and their community. One of the events that encourage this thinking is the twin day. With the help of our schools, Houston is a great, caring community.

Happy Elves

Entry: When it comes to volunteering, Houston has a great number of people that come out to support the community. When the community was fund-raising for the new leisure facility, we had a jail and bail fund-raiser at the Houston Shopping Mall. Our elves would arrest "naughty", but also "nice" people, and then a family member would donate in order to bail their family member out. It was a very successful and fun event.

Golfing

Entry: Houston offers too great golf courses. My parents are passionate golfers, and they have decided to remain in Houston for their retirement as Houston has great, reasonable facilities. During the summer, you can find my parents at one of the golf courses almost everyday. We joke that this is now their full time employment. Their passion has been passed onto my son, who took up golfing at a very young age. It is great that Houston allows everyone at any age to participate in the sport that they are passionate about.

Ringette Fun!

Entry: All 3 of my girls play ringette and they all love it. One Xmas practice we had Santa and Mrs. Claus come out for a skate with the kids. We also have a parents/fun night, where the kids get to play a game with their mom's & dad's. It is so much fun for everyone.

Pleasant Valley Village

Entry: Houston Retirement Housing Society was formed to try and improve the seniors housing situation in Houston. After several years of fund raising and planning, the first sixplex was constructed and is pictured here. The building was completed with mostly volunteer labour and at a fraction of normal building costs.
The building features geothermal heating and is very economical to heat.

Entry: In October, anyone could come try ringette out. My 4 yr old and her cousin came out and tried. They had so much fun and by the end of it they had improved so much. Ringette is a great sport, and the coaches are amazing.

Houston Vipers

Entry: I have been playing on the Houston Vipers for about 5 years now and it has been a blast. We are a close-knit group of ladies who really enjoy to get out and get some exercise, and of course enjoy some female bonding! What I love most is that being on the team is a great way to make friends with people I wouldn't normally 'click' with - and actually I met one of my best friends through our team. Hockey and our awesome team has been a great influence in my life, from fitness to friends.

Houston Snowmobile Club!!!

Entry: The Houston Snowmobile Club has been in extistance for many, many years. They are members of the BC Snowmobile Federation, whose mandate is to promote safe snowmobiling, environmental stewardship and organized snowmobiling in BC. We have 2 main areas that we ride and maintain for our members: Dungate Meadows and the Telkwa Range. We host events throughout the season including night rides, a ladies ride, video nights and Snowarama (charity event). We have 2 snow-cats for grooming our trails. We worked closely with the Ministry of Environment on Caribou issues and do our best to help save the local habitat. We promote "Greener Choices" including packing out what you pack in, using lower emission sleds, minimizing your impact on soil & vegetation.

Natures beauty out my front window

Entry: What a view!! Right outside my living room window I can watch deer feed on the berries from the mountain ash trees, willow branches or even vegetable scraps. We seem to be on one of the natural trails that these beautiful animals travel every day. To sit snug and warm in my house and watch these graceful animals is truly a wonderful gift. Houston is really one of the best places on Earth to live!

The true spirit of Houston

Entry: One of the best things about Houston is how generous people are and how quick they are to help each other out. Two talented and generous quilters donated this beautiful quilt to us to enable us to raise funds for special projects to help out our community. And one lucky winner gets to stay cozy and warm this winter. Many thanks to the talented women who created the quilt and to all of our supporters for buying tickets.

Entry: The kids have always been water rats. In early September we drove to Morice lake and had the most beautiful day. The dirt road winds through the forest and takes about 1 and a half hours. It is amazing to smell the fresh air and maybe one day our family will go camping at the lovely camp sites available at the lake.
