Figure Skating for the young and the young at heart

Entry: As a member of the Houston Figure Skating Club, I'm happy that the club promotes skating for all ages. From the youngest in age to the youngest at heart, you can see the enjoyment from being on the ice. Whether you are wanting to learn to play hockey, or have dreams of landing a triple axel in the olympics, the Houston Figure Skating Club can start you on your way! With an annual Christmas Gala, and year end Carnival, there's lots of opportunity to come and check out the local skating stars!

Entry: This is SO exciting!! I would like to take a moment to express what an amazing opportunity the Gamestown 'competition' has been for our town to take some time and reflect on what we have here in this valley. Houston is a really small town, with what sometimes looks like not a lot going for it. When you look through these pictures and read the stories that are attached, it makes me well up with pride!! The beauty and opportunity here is boundless! As a community, we have proved to ourselves that its not about what we don't have here, its about believing that what we do have is the best there is!!
Thank you Gamestown for allowing us to see for ourselves who we really are!!

Entry: Why we choose Houston to live - for its beauty. The Summer of 2009 was the greatest. We decided to go through the Telkwa pass and park the wheels of the Ranger in the Copper river at its mouth of the Skeena river in Terrace.

Entry: Who says roasting a hotdog over the fire is only a summer passtime? In Houston we are the toughest outdoors people, braving the elements for the simple joy of "smoke in the eyes"! The added pleasure of roasted marshmallows and hotdogs make it a year round event. It is wonderful to go for a picnic or a drive even in the winter, the beauty that surrounds us is that good! Get out and enjoy it for yourself!!

Entry: The Bulkley River runs through our farm. Who wouldn't love to have a beach like this close by at the end of a long, hot day working in the fields? Our town is surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in BC in any season! And if you don't want to go swimming, then there's lots of trails to go riding on.

Houston's Beautiful Lights

Entry: For the last 22 years Houston residents have banded together to create a winter wonderland. Community groups put up, maintain for the Season, and then take down the lights each year. Many letters have been recieved over the years expressing the pleasure the lights throughout the community bring to travellers. One of my friends once called an order to the Sears Catalogue office(which I believe is in Regina) in July, and when the person who took her order heard she was from Houston, proceeded to express how much they enjoyed going through Houston on their way to Prince Rupert. They were so impressed with the way the whole highway was decorated as well as the park. Over the years my family has been involved with many groups that have participated in Light Up, and we receive a lot of enjoyment when we drive through our town. It makes me proud to be a Houstonite!!

Houston a Very Generous Community I am Proud to Call my Home!

Entry: I have lived in Houston since I was 9 years old and am now closing in on 50 ...so I know a thing or two about this place we call home. From the time I was that child I have continually saw the people of Houston banding together to support many causes, from annual food bank drives, to benefit dances for the needy to capital project fundraisers just to name a few ...all the while supporting many charitable organizations as well as sport and school groups. I remember one weekend in particular when two fundraisers were being held at the same time, one for a charity and the other a benefit for a needy resident ...both raised over $20,000 each! Isn’t that amazing for a town of just 3500 people? When the people of Houston see a cause that needs to be addressed they never hesitate to organize and help out ...we are generous with our money as well as our time! No one ever needs to feel alone here! I love this place and am so proud to call it home! Go Houston! In my mind you are already a gold medal winner!

Nordic Walking is Great Exercise!

Entry: The latest fitness craze to hit the nation has not bypassed Houston, many are taking up Nordic Walking. It's a type a fitness program young and old can do alike. What we like most about nordic walking is how green it is you leave absolutely no carbon footprint driving to a destination to get your exercise. You start walking right from you own front door step and you get an awesome cardio workout to boot!

Entry: In Houston, there are many surrounding lakes for fishing and camping. In this picture, my dog is sitting in our motorhome while we are travelling to one of our favourite fishing spots. He very much liked the ride, but he was not so enthusiastic about the fishing.

Entry: We can have the most incredible brilliant full moons, that yellow-orange ball seems to float across our big night sky, it is like having an eternal sunset. Sorry for the picture, the size and color here does not do it justice, you have to see it to believe it! So for all you early risers, late nighter's and no sleepers, come visit us sometime.

Entry: The beautiful outdoors surround Houston. We do not have to venture far to see the local wildlife. This picture was taken one morning outside my living room window while I was sipping coffee. This time I managed to get my camera in time, but I cannot count how many times I have seen deer walking down the street or in my neighbors yard. This is amazing as I live right in the town of Houston. I have also seen a black bear with her two cubs strolling down our street. I have seen numerous moose munching in our yards. Houston is a wonderful place to live.
