New Wheels!!

Entry: Emily get's new wheels!! She can now boot around in her new Powerchair and is learning the rules of the road! She still has to use her walker for the majority of her day but is loving her new wheels and the kids think it's great that she is little miss speedy now!

Just having fun

Entry: The studants at Twain are as active as ever with out door activities! Our students sled, run, play tag, walk and skip around the school no matter what the weather, snow, rain or shine. They cross country ski, snowshoe, and build snowman and snow forts!

leisure center

Entry: I'm not from Houston but my daughter and her family live there. The leisure center is amazing for a town that size. My family uses the gym, swimming pool and skating rink several times a week. I'm happy that my Granddaughter is being raised in this Community.

A future Olympian?

Entry: I am 5 years old. My mom is carrying the Olympic torch. I think it's interesting and cool. I am excited to see my Mom carry the torch. I think the torch is really cool looking. My Mom likes running!
Mom says: I want her to believe that she can do ANYTHING!!

Community Spirit! Community support!

Entry: I was going through my pictures and found a couple of shots from Morice Mountain Nordic Ski Club events. I had to post them even though the the official deadline has passed, I wanted everyone to remember them! They both show such community spirit!
One is from the 1st Annual Sheryl Smith Memorial Ski-a-thon what a great day that was, the weather was great, the snow was perfect and we raised $15,000 with which the club started developing the lit trail for night skiing, in the following 2 years we raised enough to finish our lit loop and subsequent years funds raised helped out with other upgrades the club needed.
The other photo is when the club built a giant ski and sold spots to anyone in town who wanted to try ski on it to break the world record! We did it too, however there was a few gliches and we did not make it into the guiness book, but oh what fun we had! The mayor of the day held the lead position! The funds raised from this effort went toward the Leisure Facility fundraising efforts, as the ski club felt a need to return some of the support the community had shown them through the years!

Entry: I would like to thank all the people who stopped by the Houston & District Chamber of Commerce in the past 48 hours and dropped off stories, and photos. We did our best to get them all posted. The judges will be just as amazed as I was with all the entries. Regardless of the outcome Houston should be proud of how they came together as a community to let the world know that we live in a great town, with people who care. Good luck

Comminity Spirit

Entry: Just look what we can accomplish when we are faced with a challenge. Our community is relatively small,
we band together and get things done. We have had volunteers building riding arena's, logging sports grounds, baseball diamonds, soccer pitches, BMX track, community garden, chariot/ chuck wagon track, and even outdoor ice rinks. Not only volunteer manpower but equipment, our people, Houston people are the most generous you could want to meet.

Entry: What a wonderful experience, sharing our wonderful town with each other and the world!! It has been wonderful seeing everyone's comments and pictures, and also viewing the other communities' entries. It has brought the people of our province closer to each other. Exactly what the Olympics are about! Thank you, and thank you to the judges for giving their time to this worthwhile event!!

Entry: We have a multitude of people that give of their time, whether paid or volunteers. We could not enjoy the the games this town plays with out our ref's, linesmen, timers, score keeper's, gate openers, field liners, chute managers, clowns and event judges, be it , soccer, rugby, basketball, volleyball, hockey, baseball, rodeo, chariot racing, swim metes, drag races or the soap box derby. Our mostly unsung heroes, a round of applause and hats off to you! Thank you , thank you one and all.

Entry: Houston has always been a sports town. There are more kinds of sports showing up here all the time. The scenery around Houston has always been breathe taking. So many lakes to fish in. Mountains to hike and snowmobile on. Ball diamonds, Swimming pool that we have been working for years to get. Ice arena for hockey, (young and old) figure skating, ringette. 2 golf clubs. curling club. A beautiful park where little children can play on the playground. Now that our children have grown, we can watch our Grandkids in the sports that we and our children used to be involved in. We are still active in Hockey, curling and golfing.

Entry: The Houston Volunteer Fire Department members are awesome towards the children of Houston. Pre-schoolers are often given a royal tour through the Firehall. A special time for the little ones.

Entry: The Olympic podium, a place of triumph, a place of tears....
Although only three will stand on its venerated stage, the Olympic podium represents all those who have won, in their own hearts, but have not won the prize. Three will stand, though hundreds will have shared in the hard work, the passion, the lifechanging effort it takes to be an Olympic athlete. It gives me such great pride to know that wood taken from our community forest has been fashioned into one of these esteemed platforms. The lifeblood of the heart of our community, representing the mud, sweat and gears, sharing the honour of the ultimate outcome of the blood, sweat and tears of the Olympic athletes...
