Encouraging the Young Ones
Date: Feb 27, 2010
Entry: I am seriously contemplating a move to Fort St. John in the next month or so. I have an 18 year old (daughter) and a 15 year old (son) who are not convinced that there will be much for them to do there. My daughter is finishing grade 12 in a few months and wonders what opportunities there might be for her in FSJ. She loves photography and fashion and currently works at a local Tim Horton's (while attending school). My 15 year old son is in grade 9 and loves music. He likes to sing and is involved in the school musical (play). What can I tell/show them to send them at ease?

We love winter in Fort St John
Date: Jan 1, 2010
Entry: Fort St John is THE place to enjoy winter. The X-country ski trails at Beatton Park are incredible. The local club grooms them perfectly. My 60 year old Dad and I have been so inspired by the great trails that we are using them to train for an upcoming 31km loppet in February, something he hasn't done for 30 years and something I have never done. When we can't ski we snowshoe. We've encouraged many friends and family to take up snowshoeing, my 4 year old and his friends really love it. My family loves it here. It's a great place to get active and have fun inside and outside, especially in the winter.

Helping hands!
Date: Dec 31, 2009
Entry: Fort St John has hundreds of people that not only participate in all different sports, but also put in hundreds of hours helping out children, physically and mentally challenged, and seniors to get out and enjoy whatever sport or healthy activity they enjoy. Just this year we had a couple come forward and donate $150,000.00 so that the whole community could use our new indoor walking track for free. We've also hosted the northern B.C. games more than any other community. I'd say " We support the games" !

Fort St John - a great community for outdoors activities all year 'round
Date: Dec 31, 2009
Entry: Winter, spring, summer and fall this is a community that encourages active living and getting out all through the seasons. I particularly like the activities around nearby Charlie Lake - kayaking, canoeing, hiking, skating and cross country skiing (Whiskey Jack ski club volunteers groom trails at Beatton park as well as Links golf course in town).
Fresh air, natural beauty and great people make this home for me.

Fort St John's Energy
Date: Dec 16, 2009
Entry: Fort St John is a city like no other...the energy level is high in all areas of reacreation with participation by all ages of residents......toddlers to adults and pensioners. Being a pensioner myself and having young grandchildren, I know firsthand the oppurtunities that are put forward for all ages. We see grandparents out tobogganing with their grandchldren, watch hockey games both indoors and outdoors, golfing with the kids and just plain get out walking on trails year round. There are so many outdoor things to do that they are too numerous to name. Some of our indoor facilities, paid for by fundraising, are very old and coming to the end of their time . They are in need of upgrades but we still all use what we have. From Winter Lights to Communities in Bloom to the High on Ice Festival, we are full of energy.

High on Ice Festival
Date: Dec 8, 2009
Entry: The High on Ice Festival is held in January of each year and includes an international Ice Carving Competition, snow sculpting, toboggan races, children's activities in the park, sleigh rides, an ice fishing derby, an "Over the Line" ball tournament, Mukluk Curling Bonspiel and comedy night. It is organized by a planning committee made up of various organizations and interested citizens.
High on Ice will be held January 14-17, 2010 featuring the theme, "The Spirit Within". It is the only NICA sanctioned British Columbia Ice Carving Championship, and one of only four in Canada. Both local and international ice carvers from Russia, Japan, Belgium and the United States, as well as carvers from across Canada have competed in High on Ice in the past five years, creating artistic masterpieces easily rivaling any other ice carving competition in the world.
The Community Celebration events of High on Ice promote overall community involvement for all demographics including families, adults, children and seniors. It is a signature community event that residents can be proud of and enjoy and celebrate the winter season and outdoor activities.

Santa comes to celebrate Fort St John!
Date: Dec 1, 2009
Entry: Santa and Mrs Claus came to Fort St John to celebrate the beginning of the Christmas Season. Thousands of young ones and their parents and grandparents lined the streets to see a fabulous parade and of course the jolly old elf and Mrs. Claus. Regardless of the chill, at Centennial Park they waited in line to see Santa.
Every investment in this community is done with the families in mind. They run our businesses, they use our new walking tracks, they enjoy the recreation facilities, they support our non profits, and they are the lifeblood and the heartbeat of the Energetic City. The community of Fort St John is focused on moving forward sustainably, environmentally; financially; and socially. Instead of bursting forth with programs without community buy-in, the residents spoke and now the work that has been done will begin to unfold; a legacy for our children, new community development guidelines; LEED City buildings; the Enerplex; and a new hospital (Gold LEED) just to name a few.
Our new walking trails in and around the City have been used more than was ever imagined. Families are out biking and walking enjoying a healthier lifestyle. Soon our walking track in the Enerplex will assist in maintaining that healthy lifestyle on those occasional -40 days.
We will be cheering on Denny and Jay Morrison as they BRING HOME THE GOLD!
You are welcome to join us.....are you ready for the Energy?

The Energetic City
Date: Oct 23, 2009
Entry: I moved here in 2001 to build a better and brighter future for my family. It is a land of oppertunity. It is an interesting balance of tradition and mordern innovation here. The people are unique and hard working. Many improvements have been made in the community over the past 8 years. Now our town has turned into a small city. It's vitality and progressive strides in efficiency, switching to eco friendly practices, and active living is truley paying off. The community's residents are getting involved more. Good things are happening here and there is more to come. There is always something to do, it's the place to be in 2010!

what a difference 12 years makes!
Date: Oct 21, 2009
Entry: I have lived in Fort St John for the past 12 years. I wish I had taken 'before and after' photos! Since I moved here, the city has provided a huge walking trail, wide enough for families with carriages, bikes, and dogs to all go walking together. The trail is looked after winter and summer, and is used all day, every day. The new Enerplex not only provides a venue for future Olympians, but also accommodates us 'less than Olympians' with the walking track which anyone can use, free of charge! There are 3 gyms in town, all well used and popular. Add to all this, the hockey arenas, the soccer fields, the baseball fields, the horseshoe pits, a skateboard park, a grand swimming pool, a curling rink, and even the ski hill is opening this year! What a great place to live!

A world of opportunity
Date: Oct 21, 2009
Entry: I am a newcomer to Fort St. John and have been pleasantly surprised by the opportunities available for physical activity in this community. I love the walking/biking trails network which appear to be ever-expanding and well-used by other residents. We have access to hiking in the Fish Creek Community Forest, and down hill biking close to the City. The new Enerplex has a HUGE walking track to open in the coming months. There are also tennis courts. In the winter there are snowmobiling trails, you can go cross-country skiing, skating in world-class facilities (Enerplex), curling. There are many sports leagues you can join, several gyms and squash and racquetball facilities.
I am loving the abundance of opportunities in Fort St. John!

My Visit to the Richmond Oval
Date: Oct 20, 2009
Entry: I was very fortunate to visit the Richmond Oval on September 28th. This gave me a new perspective on how a community can come together to develop such a great facility. While I was touring the oval, I was thinking of Fort St John's new Enerplex which should be completed in the next few months. Our new facility is the first of its kind in the world. It is a three level facility with two NHL size hockey rinks on the first floor, an Olympic size speed skating oval on the second floor and a walking track on the third floor. This is all supported by a modern high tech system for managing the ice and facility. It has also been designed to support ice making in the nearby main Arena if the need arises. I was making comparisons between the two facilities as I was walking around and it confirmed that BC currently has two world class speed skating facilities (one being FSJ). I was also fortunate enough to skate on the Richmond oval ice and had forgotten how hard speed skating ice is compared to hockey ice. The added bonus for this tour is that I had my picture taken with three of Canada's Olympians and I got to hold the torch. The Enerplex is just one addition to the many things that FSJ is doing to enhance our quality of life.

Date: Oct 15, 2009
Entry: I love to be active and Fort St John has so many different possibilities for this to happen. Whether you like to bike, walk, play sports, or join a gym this city has endless venues. Young Kids and Their Parents Love the Walking Trails
Date: Aug 19, 2009
Entry: My motivation to stay active is that I am almost 40 years old with two young children under three years of age. I want to stay healthy to make sure I can enjoy all kinds of activities with my kids as they get older. In the last few years our City has created a paved walking trail system that is kept clear year round, no easy task with the snow we see in this region! My family and I really appreciate having a safe, accessible place to walk with a stroller, bicycle, and rollerblade. We hope to see more trails added to the existing network in the future.

Celebrating our Nations Birthday with the Torch
Date: Jul 21, 2009
Entry: Fort St John’s Canada Day Celebrations had a very special visitor this year… a replica of the Olympic Torch. Thanks to Olympic Torch Relay sponsor Coca-Cola, the torch was displayed for everyone in the community to view, to touch and to take pictures with. Stories from locals and visitors alike were shared during this special moment. A young lady from Edmonton revealed her excitement to be named as a torchbearer for her community. One of our local teachers recalled his experience bearing the torch during the Calgary Olympics. Having such an amazing memory of that time he submitted his name for Vancouver 2010 and so far has made it to round 2 of the selection process.
The day ended with a wonderful opportunity to speak with the proud parents of local 2010 Olympic athlete hopefuls Denny and Jay Morrison.
It was a magical experience that will be remembered for years to come.
