Torch Lighting Ceremony at ECE
Date: Oct 30, 2009
Entry: At East Chilliwack Elementary students and staff participated in a torch lighting ceremony which was the kick-off for the school-wide running program. The students at ECE hope to collectively run the distance of the Olympic Torch Relay route by the end of the year. We all run 3 times a week and the number of laps are recorded. As of today, we have run 4708 km since the beginning of this school year. The class that has the highest average per student, will be awarded with the opportunity to be in possession of our ECE Olympic torch for 2 weeks. The students in the winning class will run with the torch during the school runs. The torch will then be passed on to the next class who has the highest average per student. Mrs. Rogers-Stadnyk grade 4 class was the first class awarded with the torch. Congratulations grade 4's. We will keep you posted on our progress.

The Spirit of Sports
Date: Apr 3, 2009
Entry: March 27th - 29th the Paul Brenner Memorial Hockey tournament was held in our community. This tournament was created to honour the memory of a local teen who was killed in his Bantam year of hockey, at age 15, in a motor vehicle accident. The Memorial tournament has grown over the past 10 years now involving over 480 players and 24 teams from all over BC and Washington. This year, the tournament coordinators did an awesome job of involving the community creating a strong community feel for the tournament. With a wide variety of sponsors extending their support to the tournament Chilliwack and the Minor Hockey association was able to pull together another successful tournament for visitors and locals alike.

2010 Cultural Olympiad 2008
Date: Mar 10, 2009
Entry: Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design - Spirit of Place – February 21, 2008
The Stó:l? Artisan Centre, located at the Stó:l? Community Futures Development Corporation in Chilliwack has supported LWLL’s Halq’meylem Language Class for the past 3 years by providing space in our Stó:l? Artisan Centre Boardroom.
LWLL came home 10 years ago to her community of Tzeachten First Nation. She understood the critical need to preserve the language of her people, as it is one of the many endangered First Peoples’ languages in Canada. She took Halq'eméylem language classes, and became a certified language teacher. She went from being a learner, to a teacher in only a few short years. Today, she is an instructor at the University of the Fraser Valley, and maintains her position as a sessional instructor in ceramics at Emily Carr.
Emily Carr called upon her to be one of the artist mentors for its 2008 Cultural Olympiad Project, Spirit of Place.
She chose her language students to teach, and the youth in the class stepped forward to learn different art techniques, and then produced their vision for Spirit of Place. The youth included:
Tzeachten First Nation
‘Namgis First Nation
They all were thrilled and proud to be chosen for this work, and finished their artworks for the show. They prepared themselves for the opening, and brought with them the teachings they have received from both her and their families. They brought their culture, each wore special regalia, the Stó:l? youth wore paddle vests they had designed and sewn in the language class and cedar head bands they had made also. The ‘Namgis youth wore their traditional regalia, including button blankets, dance aprons, and cedar head pieces adorned with abalone and ermine skins. They also brought the tradition to Potlach, to give in celebration, and prepared small carved paddles to mark the occasion, which they gave away to the very receptive assembled guests.
In advance of the event they all participated in a media interview, and travelled at 5am to be on Breakfast Television to speak about their art, all in regalia. SP’s artwork, Spokes, Eagle, was chosen by Emily Carr as the featured work from the Stó:l? art pod, one of 35 in the province.
This exhibition traveled to the Beijing Olympics and was showcased in the Canada House. It will have a showing and reception at Rideau Hall, the Ottawa home of Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean Governor General, and will travel until its return for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games. LSLL, SP, and her mother have accepted the invitation and will attend representing Chilliwack. We are so proud of our group of young artists, and are very proud that they represent the Spirit of First Nations Youth for not only our Aboriginal Peoples, but for all Peoples, especially their home, in beautiful Chilliwack, BC, “The Great Outside” in the heart of Stó:l? Traditional Territory.
