Spirit Square

Entry: Spirit Square
Local MLA announced on Thursday March 27 a $200,000 grant from the provincial Government for the creation of Chetwynd Spirit Square at Cedar Park (also known as Gazebo Park). The announcement comes in celebration of BC’s 150 anniversary and will give Chetwynd residents a centrally located gathering place. The Chetwynd Spirit Square will allow residents and visitors alike to enjoy the community, It will be a place where our community can gather and celebrate the Peace region, a new central location to meet and take part in events and activities. The park, washrooms and pathway will be age-friendly and wheelchair accessible.

Taxi Saver Program

Entry: The Taxi Saver Program is offered by a partnership between the District of Chetwynd and Little Prairie Cabs to give our residents subsidized taxi fares. The cost of the program is 50% user and 50% by the District of Chetwynd. Seniors and disabled residents may apply for the Taxi Saver "HandyPass" to recieve the 50% discount. Recently, we have applied for a $2500.00 grant to BC Transit to assist with costs.

Rain Barrel Program

Entry: Rain Barrel Program
Upon the purchase of a rain barrel from a local store, residents of the District of Chetwynd will be eligible for a $25.00 rebate to a maximum of $50.00 per household. To obtain the rebate, residents must complete an application form (available at the District Office) with their name, address and signature and supply a dated receipt from a local business as proof of purchase of a rain barrel. This year council adopted a program to promote the use of low flow toilets through a generous $50 rebate per toilet (maximum 2 toilets per household). This initiative will enhance our existing water conservation program.

Go Green Get Lean Challenge

Entry: Go Green Get Lean Challenge
Participants from the Sukunka Group’s Horticultural Therapy Workshop, which took place last year, put together an Earth Day Challenge based on the book’s Go Green Get Lean. Teams were formed at members paid $10.00 each to join the challenge, which lasted one month. All proceeds from the challenge went to the Healing Garden. In total $510 was raised throughout the course of the month-long challenge, participants lost a combined total of over 140 pounds. The team losing the most weight and the winners of the team entry draw will be treated to a meal from Books n’ Bytes café prepared with recipes from the Go Green Get Lean Book. The team with the most weight lost was ‘Snapdragons’, and ‘Naturally Sweet’ won the draw. Go Green Get Lean looks at how food choices affect not only our bodies, but out planet as well, and the gradual changes that we can make to improve our health and reduce our carbon footprint. Challenge participants were asked to avoid sugar, reduce packaging and eat at least one vegetarian meal per week. The Library has copies of Go Green Get Lean available for loan.

Trails for Tomorrow

Entry: Ministry of Forest has requested our guys to assist with fire fighting within the province. Several of the guys are ready to assist. We will be accommodating as needed. We have 20 participants. They have all signed up but this does not mean that they may all miss days depending on the demand. With the days that are missed we will extend the program based on the number of guys that effects missing our program. So example if 10 guys go for 21 days the 10 guys will extend the 21 days.
This weekend of August 8th 10 workers will be on call (5pacs) depending on what is needed in the province. (5 will travel and 5 will be on call for our area)
Trails for Tomorrow Program
Project Description:
The District of Chetwynd has several projects that will create job opportunities for our area that have been affected by the significant economic and social impact by the challenges facing the forest sector. The project will give relief to those that have been affected by the markets and shutdown of the forest sector. The over all project will employ 1 Project manager, 2 Supervisors and 17 employees for the following projects. Project Greenspace, Project Baldy, Project R2, Project Stream keepers and Project Cleanup. The start date was May 25, 2009 and intake of employees mid June 1, 2009.
Project Greenspace
GPS the existing trail system for the Greenspace Hiking trail system, install appropriate directional signage where necessary and improve and ensure the trail is accessible. Many of the trails already exist but the additional trails will be joined to the Cemetery Link path, 2nd Phase Rodeo grounds walkway, path throughout Legion Park, Path into the back of Rotary Park, repair /upgrade bridges over creeks and upgrade and maintenance to existing trails. The existing trails consist of Cottonwood, Crown, Coyote, Centurion, Deer Point, Rodeo, 3 Culverts, Connector, Baldy,
Community Forest and Windrem. Total km’s (13km- Centurion Creek Hiking system and 15km from Greenspace trail systems located, total kms = 28kms) (extended trail systems estimated at 7km).
Project Baldy
The existing Old Baldy trail has been included in upgrades and maintenance within project greenspace. The upgrade of the connector extending the Old Baldy trail to the Community Forest will be used for walking, hiking and mountain biking. The team will start at the Community Forest site and start developing the rustic trails to meet up with the existing Old Baldy trail. This connector trail will be GPS and appropriate signage placed. (5km for each trail connecting to Community Forest approx - 10km total) The other trails on this area are connectors to Ghost Mountain and looping back to the Old Baldy, this trail is estimated to be approx. 10km. The trail is higher in the mountain with greater chances of encountering wildlife.
Project R2
Project R2 is the first project that was completed, which included cleanup of garbage consisting of 3020kg. These recreation trails are identified to include hiking, mountain biking and horse riding. Work was completed approximately 53km including trail maintenance, groomed, water drainage, remove danger trees and snags, built access – bridge and safety routes. The team was successful in completing the trail for the June 20th Adventure Race. Signage will be placed at the trail head which includes mapping of the area and GPS information. The crew also placed a 2000 reward sign for anyone throwing garbage in the area.
Project Stream keepers
The existing streams in the municipality are Windrem and Centurion. The stream banks and any waste will be cleaned and items removed for proper disposal. Any debris will be removed and cleaned up for both of these areas including stream restoration where needed. (5km) The creek systems will be completed end of August.
Project Cleanup
The rural and municipal areas need additional relief for waste removal mainly focused on industrial and back roads. Many forms of garbage including abandoned car bodies, fridges, freezers, garbage bags and more along road systems that need to be removed. We will campaign local area residents to assist with calls for pickup and locations as well travel within Municipal district and Peace River Regional District. Project Cleanup will work directly with stream keepers for cleanup and Project cleanup is in addition to any cleanup within the municipal area as well as any areas that they are doing maintenance to trails. Area cleanups include to date Moberly Lake old dump site area, Stone Creek load out, Centurion Trail, Sundance Gravel Pit, R2, Tower road and road side areas near the Community Forest.
$2000 liter signs have been placed in surrounding areas of town, R2, Tower Road, Moberly Road and Wilkin Road, in hopes to detour people from littering.

Spirit Week One Year Countdown

Entry: The Spirit Week One Year Countdown began with a 7am run, followed by an 8am workout. A class of students from Little Prairie Elementary School enjoyed an hour of snow-related activities at 9am, while Councillor Joanne Roberts officiated a Spirit Week draw at Peace FM at 10am. Little Lights Daycare had some fun tobogganing at 11am, while a few brave souls hiked Old Baldy picture generously provided by Buffalo Aerial Services. Junior Curling Club and Chetwynd Secondary School curlers put their brooms down for a moment to take a picture at the Chetwynd Recreation Centre. The Pine Valley seniors took a break from carpet bowling to pose with Councillor Joanne Roberts and the Spirit of BC Flag, while the Little Giant Figure Skating Club strut their stuff with the flag, while the Electric Eels swim club take the flag for a dip in the pool, while the Chetwynd & District Minor Hockey Association St. John Advertising Atom Recreation and Talisman Energy Atom Development teams join forces on the ice with seven Spirit of BC flags. To close out the day, a member of the Speed Skating Club took the flag for a spin around the man made rink outside Mickey’s Place.
