Terry Fox Run/Walk

Entry: Terry Fox Run
The Terry Fox Run for Cancer Research was held Sunday, September 13 at 1:00pm. Participants entered by donation and were able to choose to complete either a five or ten kilometer trek. This year boasted a good turnout for the event. Those signing up chose to either walk, bike, or run the route. One of our locals donated a considerable amount to the cause and completed the run using her walker. She donated a jar full of change in the amount of $40.00 with a total of $350.80 for the cause. This year was made successful because of participants like her, selflessly donating their dollars to aid in the research of Cancer.
Also the Little Prairie Elementary School held its annual Terry Fox Walk to raise money for cancer research Thursday September 17, 2009. Students were asked to bring one dollor to donate towards the cause. Little Prairie is one of many schools in Canada to host this type of event annually. It is important for our children in to know Terry Fox and of his accomplishments in order to keep the dream alive. The Terry Fox run/walk, along with similar initiatives, gives younger generations a chance to help fight the battle to end cancer.

Family Fest
Date: Sep 23, 2009
Entry: Family Fest
A good time was held by all at the 2009 Chetwynd Family Festival held on the weekend of September 12 and 13. Family Fest is an event which takes place annually and is free of charge for children of all ages and their families. On Saturday evening, the event opened with an outdoor Coffeehouse performance. The show started later than scheduled that evening, but was a success all the same. After the show, an outdoor screening of ET: The Extra Terrestrial was available to spectators free of charge. The movie was played on a large screen in the ball diamond.
On Sunday a free pancake breakfast was held for families in the Cottonwood Hall at the Chetwynd Rec Centre. After breakfast, an outdoor church service was held in the ball diamond behind the Rec Centre. The band played from the back of a truck, while service attendees were seated in chairs below. A noon, Family Fest activities began. It was a gorgeous day for festival participants; the sun was shining with clouds hardly visible in the sky. Kids were met by a menagerie of different activities offered in the Rec Centre Field, food and treats were also readily available. The Little Dudes Fun Time Express took eager children around the field on a train made of colorful barrels. The ride was truly unique and a “barrel-o-fun” for the kids, as was apparent by the contestant stream of riders lined up to await their turn. Free face painting was another huge attraction for festival participants. Amazing Faces was on site to decorate the kids, compliments of the Chetwynd Family Resource Centre. After the face painting, brave children took a chance at the Crazy Hair booth. At this station, hair was tussled then done up in a quirky, disarrayed display of hair and objects for decoration. Two blow up bouncy castles and a tropical blow up slide were on site for smaller children to play in; many little ones took full advantage of the oversized toys. An Arts and Crafts booth was also on site. Children were able to create at will land were also able to decorate a bag to carry their creation in.
There were free balloons for everyone, volunteers kept busy throughout the day supplying balloons to patrons of the event and monitoring the kids involved in festival activities.

Garlic Festival
The first annual Garlic Festival held March 13 was a great success with reviews from those who attended and good coverage by local media. The primary purpose of this Festival was to increase awareness of production of local food and food security initiatives and that was achieved. A cookbook with a compilation of the submitted recipes, poems and songs from Garlic Festival has been produced and is on sale for $10.00 as a promotional fundraising initiative for the Sukunka Group.
The Festival was supported by the grant we received from the Vancouver Foundation. This grant also made the Horticultural Therapy workshop held in September, 2008 possible. Nine people representing various service sectors took the introductory course and have gone on to initiate gardens and other food security projects.
Youth in Charge Project
As a result of a partnership between the Canadian Community Economic Development Network, the Social Planning Society and the District of Chetwynd, there is a “Youth in Charge” project in Chetwynd. Two youth leaders are organizing forums and developing an action plan for employment of youth in the area.
A partner project is also taking place at Saulteau First Nations and resources and mentoring are being shared between the two initiatives.
Circus North
A Circus North was held for three days in April. No fewer than 45 youth attended on any given day with as many as 49 and more dropping in, or volunteering. As we asked for full-time adult volunteers if children were younger than age nine, we had new adults introduced to the benefits of the program.
The Arts Council supported the program with $5,000.00 while Saulteau First Nations contributed $1,200.00 and Sukunka Group administered the funds.
As usual we asked youth to contribute $20.00 each if they could, and we raised nearly $500.00 in that manner. We also asked the youth to be prepared to perform at a community event in the upcoming year. A stilt making workshop was offered this time as well, and there are now a couple more people feeling confident about building stilts.
The challenge is always finding a way to remain in contact with all the youth who participated, and keeping their skills up and developing. There is about $500.00 left over, and I hope to bring in a facilitator for uni-cycling specifically as we have a core group of young people who are skilled riders and very interested in developing further.

Entry: The Archie’s Golf & Slow-Pitch Tournament
On behalf of The Archie’s Ball & Golf Club and all who participated by either playing or sponsoring, a cheque was presented to the Chetwynd Senior Citizen Housing Society Assisted Living Project with a cheque for a whopping $11,000.00! With such tough economic times happening across the country and North America we had all prepared to perhaps not reap the successes that we have had in past years for our charity fundraisers. But this community of Chetwynd is special. The businesses and participants came through in a big way, clearly they are as passionate about this project as we are and we thank them for that. On May 23, 147 golfers gathered at the Moberly Lake & District Golf Club for a full day of golf and socializing. The following weekend 12 slo-pitch teams battled the high winds for a great cause. 3 divisions – winners of each division all having 3 win 0 loss were: The Archie’s, Murray’s Pubbers and Hitmen. The game of the day was when The Archie’s and Murray’s Liquor Express teams hit the field against each other. Most of the Murray’s Liquor Express teams are original Archie’s so the Express split into 2 teams so they could have representatives from both. The game was full of competition, good natured heckling, but mostly lots of laughs. NOTE, this tournament does not hold a traditional final game, as the real winner is the CHARITY!

Murray’s Pub and Liquor Express hosted the 2nd Annual OTL Softball Tournament on Saturday April 4th, 2009. The nine participating teams enjoyed a fun day in the sunshine while raising funds for the Triple R Memorial Playground Fund. The tournament raised a total of $1900 towards the new playground bringing the total amount raised to $11,287.95. Construction on the playground which will be built at the ball diamonds will begin this spring. This tournament and money raised would not be possible without volunteers, who organized the OTL, did raffles and 50/50’s, and donated the fire pits to keep all the participants and on-lookers warm. The personal donations like the $1000 donation from one resident, and of course, the participants and all those who came to watch. The organizer is hoping more people will come out next year and join in the fun with the expectation of the event getting bigger each year. Over-the-Line or OTL is a game related to softball with three or four players per team. The game started on the beaches of the Southern United States but has been adapted for us Northerners by drawing the court in the snow instead of the sand.

Entry: Farmer’s Market
Chetwynd will once again have a Farmer’s Market. Volunteers have been meeting with representatives of the Sukunka Group, and the Healing Garden Coordinator over the past few months in an effort to re-establish a Farmer’s Market in town. After much planning, a grand opening celebration for the Market was scheduled for Thursday, May 21st at 4:00pm. The Farmer’s Market will be located on the former Texaco lot between Twins Restaurant and the Windrem Motel and will be open every Thursday between the hours of 4 and 8pm. Tables will rent for $10.00 per week. The Market hopes to offer residents and visitors a taste of the variety of local foods and to increase awareness around food security according to the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets website. “Farmers Markets sell a wide range of farm-fresh, wholesome foods including fruits and vegetables, organics, especially cheese, eggs, beef, seafood, jams, artisan products, and so much more!” Chetwynd’s Farmers Market will likely primarily offer fresh vegetables to start, but they hope to attract a variety of vendors including local artisans and home based businesses as the season progresses.
Organizers are looking to acquire a large tent which could house the Farmer’s Market and offer shelter from the sun, wind and the occasional rainy day. Until a tent can be located, vendors wishing to have shelter are encouraged to bring their own tents. Additional activities are being considered for the Farmer’s market including a children’s corner where kids can sell their own goods, barter tables encouraging trade over cash transactions, music and activities for families.

Assisted Living
Date: Aug 21, 2009
Entry: Council Chambers were packed at 1:30pm Friday, November 7, 2008 for an announcement by local MLA, and councillor, who worked tirelessly on what he feels is the most important issue facing Chetwynd, gave a background of the project and stood by as the MLA made the announcement of four senior's assisted living units and eight affordable senior's housing units for Chetwynd. He said the announcement was a highlight of his seven and a half years in office and he was "more than happy to be there today making this annoucement". The project will break ground in the spring with a targeted late summer completion. The construction timetable is possible due to modules built by RONA and Britco being donated VANOC - Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympics Games. The modules will be transported to Chetwynd and modifications made at the expense of BC Housing including the building of a commons area. The land for the project, located on the banks of Windrem Creek across the street from the Pine valley Senior's Centre, was donated to the District. The completed project will recieve ongoing operational capital from the Province through BC Housing and Northern Health while the day to day operations will be overseen by the Chetwynd Senior Citizen's Housing Society. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 258 has purchased a van to provide free transportation for seniors and handicapped individuals. The van has a capacity of carrying 12 passengers and 6 wheelchairs. A bridge over Windrem Creek with accessible sidewalks will lead over to the downtown core and Pine Valley Seniors Recreation Centre. The total capital cost of the development is projected to be $2.6 million. In a news release from the Minister of Housing and Social Development: "The provincial government continues to move forward in our commitment to increase housing options in communities across the province by providing Olympic Legacy Affordable Housing for people who need it most. This development will provide stable housing for seniors in Chetwynd, giving them the opportunity to remain close to their families and friends in their own community".

Locomotion (Rodeo Walkway)
Date: Aug 21, 2009
Entry: Locomotion (Rodeo Walkway)
Construction of a new walkway to provide a safe walking/biking route to link the town’s largest subdivision to the central part of town where the recreation centre, high school and public library can be found. The new path will be paved to a 2.0 meter width to allow room for pedestrian movement including those with bicycles or strollers as well as maintenance for sweeping and snow removal. Included with the project will be recessed areas where we plan to install benches and possibly display a wood carving. This project will establish a beautiful walkway corridor between the Rodeo Subdivision and nearby public facilities, making it easier and more attractive for local residents to walk to different events or even stroll to town. Our feeling is that by creating walking paths like the one proposed, we will also encourage families or individuals to visit family or friends via walking, pedaling or roller blading. The existing infrastructure or lack of, already gets plenty of use by families and school kids throughout the entire day. This project ties in nicely with a proposed expansion of our existing recreation facility which will include a walking facility that was identified as a need for our seniors, especially in the winter. There are residents who currently run and walk this route as part of an exercise routine and they also will benefit from this proposed walkway. Of course, any reduction in vehicle use results in a reduction of air polution in our community and lessens green house gas emmisions.
Currently, the extended path to the carwash will continue with the wave of trees to the end of the boulevard and will be a crush fulled walk to the extension of the boulevard to the Welcome to Chetywnd sign. With new improvements of pavement and grass seed for the additional boulevard to the mound.

Rec Complex Expansion / Renovation Project
Date: Aug 21, 2009
Entry: Chetwynd & District Recreational Complex - Expansion Project
The Recreation Complex consists of two buildings – the Recreation Centre with the arena, curling rink and two large multi-purpose rooms and the second building, the Leisure Pool. The arena was built in 1972, the curling rink in 1980 and the pool in 1990. As the community has grown and changed, so have the needs for community facilities. In November, 2006 voters approved at referendum an expansion/renovation project for the Complex, consisting of:
• Join the buildings – this will let people circulate throughout the Complex without going outside
• Children’s play area in lobby – area for toddlers for informal play
• Add a full-size waterslide to the pool – fun and excitement for all
• Expand the fitness room from 700 square feet to 4000 square feet
• Add a combination squash/racquetball court
• Add a climbing wall
• Expand the food services area and create viewing behind glass into the arena
• Add multi-purpose rooms – meetings, programs.
• Add two arena dressing rooms behind players benches – increase to 6 dressing rooms
• Double the size of two of the four existing arena dressing rooms

Healing Garden

Entry: Healing Garden
The District has assisted in retaining the Healing Garden Coordinator. A proposal for a "Farm to School Bar" program was successful, and now the Healing Garden and other local growers will market produce to the High School to maintain a Salad Bar school lunch program. This is a good start to increasing community-supported agiculture. A proposal to the Vancouver Foundation to develop a Community Food Security plan, and to raise the potential to establish an all season community greenhouse was also successful. Funds from the Northern Lights College Foundation have also been approved for the Workshop.
About the Garden
The garden was started in the spring of 2007, thanks to a seed grant from the Union of BC Municipalities Health Promotion Fund. The Healing Garden has made a noticeable impact on the lives of long-term care patients, garden clients, and visitors. Health agency clients received instruction in vegetable cultivation and benefited greatly from the exercise and stress reduction as well as nutritional improvement from the fresh foods they grew. Long-term care patients have been able to look after their own garden plots from their wheelchairs in the taller widely spaced raised beds. The public garden contains a wide variety of trees, shrubs, perennials, flower bulbs, herbs, and annuals. A small greenhouse and garden shed have been constructed and equipped with a tiller, wheelbarrow, and hand tools. The Social Planning Society is producing a Food Security Plan for Chetwynd and area and raising funds to build a community greenhouse and gardens.

Silver Anniversary Legacy Project
The Pine Valley Seniors group applied for a grant from the Federal New Horizons for Seniors Program and was awarded $15,000.00. The grant proposal best describes their project and reads. “Our Legacy Priority” is to actively engage and recruit “junior” seniors in sports and volunteerism activities to "ensure succession" and promote healthy lifestyles among the senior population of Chetwynd and area". The grant money has been spent partly on new programs and advertising to recruit “Junior” seniors (55 +) to help preserve the current membership's legacy to our community, and the balance on the building a new wheel chair ramp and three wheelchair accessible horseshoe pits. Since the start of the project, membership has grown by 20 making a total membership of 70 seniors. The goal is "25 new members for 25 years"! The construction side of the project is now completed and the Pine Valley Seniors send sincere thanks to all the local companies and volunteers who gave "in-kind" donations of materials and lobour. In-kind donators are as follows: District of Chetwynd; Chetwynd Redi Mix; Canadain Forest Products; and several individuals.
