Caring in Chetwynd
Date: Jan 2, 2010
Entry: Chetwynd is my home for the last 31 years. As a new immigrant to Canada at the time, Chetwynd opened up their arms to welcome my family and myself. To this day it is still the same and I truly call Chetwynd my home. The beautiful scenery, the walking trails, the community spirit makes Chetwynd one of the better places to live in.
With the new seniors facility ( an Olympic legacy) we will remember the games for a long time to come. Watch on the 31st of January the Olympic flame at the new facility.

Also Quintessential Quilters Guild has an annual Christmas dinner for 72 ladies and donations of hygiene items are made to women’s transition house.
The Quintessential Quilters are a group of ladies that enjoy quilting and love to share their talents with others. They host a yearly Quilt Show and last year did so in conjunction with Chetwynd’s Trade Show and took home a prize for Best Booth!! The Guild makes Care Quilt and they are given to people who lose their homes to a fire, to each senior in the Long Term Care Facility in our hospital and annually donate a quilt to Chetwynd’s New Years Baby. The Guild has built quilts for RCMP vehicles and these quilts are kept in the patrol cars to be used at accident scenes.
Just recently the Guild has joined a group called Soldiers Angels. Quilts are sent to Germany and then given to Canadian Soldiers that are hospitalized. Support for this program has been overwhelming.

Entry: Bridges 2009
Fighting Racism: Bridges 2009, a three-day workshop organized by the Chetwynd
Committee for Cultural Responsibility and the Chetwynd Community Arts
Council, was facilitated by artist George Littlechild and author Richard Van Camp. Ten adults and fifteen students aged 10 to 17 (the majority 13/14 year olds) examined the experience which have shaped their lives and thoughts, expressing these self-discoveries in words and painting. The individual paintings, collages of Place and Self Portrait, were photographed and dry mounted, in whole or in part, in preparation for permanent display. The writings - mainly produced on assigned themes: Scars and Transformation – are presented in booklet form. Unfortunately, not all participants, for their own personal reasons, submitted their compositions for publication.

Chetwynd & District Recreational Complex - Expansion Project
Date: Dec 15, 2009
Entry: Chetwynd & District Recreational Complex - Expansion Project
The Recreation Complex consists of two buildings – the Recreation Centre with the arena, curling rink and two large multi-purpose rooms and the second building, the Leisure Pool. The arena was built in 1972, the curling rink in 1980 and the pool in 1990. As the community has grown and changed, so have the needs for community facilities. In November, 2006 voters approved at referendum an expansion/renovation project for the Complex, consisting of:
• Join the buildings – this will let people circulate throughout the Complex without going outside
• Children’s play area in lobby – area for toddlers for informal play
• Add a full-size waterslide to the pool – fun and excitement for all
• Expand the fitness room from 700 square feet to 4000 square feet
• Add a combination squash/racquetball court
• Add a climbing wall
• Expand the food services area and create viewing behind glass into the arena
• Add multi-purpose rooms – meetings, programs.
• Add two arena dressing rooms behind players benches – increase to 6 dressing rooms
• Double the size of two of the four existing arena dressing rooms
• Add an indoor walking/running track
• Install a fire sprinkler system throughout the Complex

The District of Chetwynd Welcomes You....
Date: Dec 15, 2009
Entry: The District of Chetwynd welcomes you…
The District of Chetwynd is located in the foothills of the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains. It is British Columbia’s entrance to the mighty Peace River country. Located at the junction of Highways 97 and 29 and on the CN Rail mainline, Chetwynd is the natural transportation hub of the Peace River area.
Chetwynd has a population of about 3,100 with a trading area of about 7,000 people, and the population will continue to grow as business and industrial development come to fruition. When not hard at work, the residents of Chetwynd enjoy a four season playground of forests, rolling hills, snow capped mountains, undulating fields and crystal clear lakes and rivers. All of this combined with excellent recreation complex with wave pool, team-size hot tub, sauna, six sheet curling rink, ice arena, outdoor skating oval, skateboard park and sports fields help to make Chetwynd a good place to live and raise a family.
The District of Chetwynd was incorporated in September of 1962 as a Village. The Municipality’s status was changed in 1983 when it was reincorporated as a District. Historically, the District is new and as a result, has incorporated modern concepts in community layout and designs of streets and services, properly planned residential, commercial and industrial districts, with centre core, public and recreational areas clearly defined.
Visit Chetwynd and enjoy our hospitality.

Winter Activities
Date: Dec 15, 2009
Entry: Winter Activities
Skiing/Snowboarding – Powder King is Chetwynd’s nearest ski area. Famous for lots of deep powder snow, this hill provides opportunities for skiers and snowboarders to test their skills and enjoy beautiful views of the Rocky Mountains. Powder King is located approximately 115 km south of Chetwynd on Highway 97. Facilities include a lodge, on-hill accommodation and equipment rentals. Powder King has one chairlift, one T-bar and one handle tow.
Cross-Country Skiing – Chetwynd’s cross-country ski trails were built by the Chetwynd Cross Country Ski Club. There is no charge to use these trails, which are located throughout the Green Space Trail System and the Community Forest. A new brochure is being developed and will be available early 2010.
Community Forest Ski Trails Systems
The Chetwynd Community Forest, located 8 km from Chetwynd on Highway 29 N, was the dream of the 1992 Forestry Capital of Canada committee. The committee started the planning of the forest in 1990. The trail and the open log classroom was opened by Prime Minister Brian Mulroney in 1992 when the Prime Minister declared Chetwynd the “Forestry Capital of Canada” for 1992.
The walking trail was designed as an educational path for children. Every generation of child has walked the path as part of school outdoor education programs and has had a picnic at the site. Northern Lights College students have used the forest for studies, along with Forestry students from Chetwynd Secondary School. The forest has been the primary spot for orientation and an odd surveyors tape are reminders of the courses.
Snowmobiling – With an average mountain snowfall in excess of 20 feet per year, the riding season can start as early as November and run into late May. You will not be overcrowded as, with the vast mountainous areas, it is possible to ride all day and rarely come across other snowmobilers. Chetwynd is surrounded by numerous mountain riding areas. There are many other scenic riding areas, which are not mapped and have not been completely marked, so please use caution when riding in these areas and let someone know your destination.

We also asked students to participate by making posters for each of the Canadian athletes and participate in the Torch Relay, Sunday January 31, 2010. Other ideas are encouraged and may include your class adopting countries, athletes and finding out more about their heritage, food and culture. We assisted with cost and supplies for this project.

Litttle Giant
Date: Dec 15, 2009
Entry: Chetwynd History
Chetwynd was originally called Little Prairie by the First Nations people who traveled through the area. Fur traders came to the area of Little Prairie as early as 1778 following the water routes and pack trails of the day. By 1919 a log cabin, built on the site just north of the present rail yard opened as a small Trading Post. This attracted a number of others to build around it, and so the community of Little Prairie grew. The Pacific Great Eastern Railway or P.G.E. as it was originally known, arrived officially on April 8th, 1959 in Little Prairie. The railroad station was built in 1959 and Chetwynd became a divisional point for the railroad. When the Pacific Great Eastern Railway arrived in Chetwynd they officially named the divisional point Chetwynd in honor of the Hon. Ralph Chetwynd, past Minister of Railways and staunch supporter of development in the Peace Region. The Post-office and community followed their lead, Chetwynd was incorporated as a village in September of 1962, and was re-incorporated as a district in 1983.
More on Chetwynd History includes:
Little Prairie Post Office – 1932
Hart Highway completed – 1952
Tuscoola Cemetery early – 1950’s
Westcoast Transmission Pipeline – 1958
Chamber of Commerce first meeting – 1959
Windrem School opened – 1959
Fire Brigade formed – 1950’s
Community grounds – 1950’s
First Library and Health Care - 1960
Little Giant
An interpretive centre has been placed inside the Visitor Centre for the Little Giant statue. The centre includes the history of how the Little Giant came to Chetwynd and how it became a big part in representing Chetwynd as the beginning of the Peace Country. We have ordered more pins of the Little Giant, which are used for promotion and for sale at the Visitor Centre and Museum.
The Little Giant just got a big upgrade. The statue that has greeted visitors and passers-by alike from its perch on the northern bank of Highway 97 was replaced by a brand new wooden replica carved by none other than Chetwynd’s own Ken Sheen. After getting an upgrade of its own – a new coat of paint, for starters – the previous Little Giant will be retired to live a life of luxury at the Little Prairie Museum.
