Entry: The Chemainus First Nation, despite what the name may imply, is actually located near the town of Ladysmith on the southeast coast of Vancouver Island. We would not be entirely honest if we suggested that Chemainus is a hot bed for winter sports. Actually, just traversing the reserve roads after a snowfall is winter sport enough for us. However, we are definitely an active community that has placed a high priority on physical fitness. Chemainus works hard to engage its citizens in physical activities - everything from weight loss clinics to soccer to canoe racing. We are fortunate that we have two regulation size playing fields that are illuminated at night. We are a very small community with only 600 persons living on reserve, although approximately 50% of those are under the age of 30. We are a community that focuses a great deal of energy and resources on education. We currently are building a new primary school and have recently received support for a new high school. The new school will have a full size gymnasium. While our support for the Winter Games may be limited to watching television next February, the spirit of competition and athleticism is alive and well in the Chemainus First Nation.
