Burns Lake has lots to offer

Entry: Burns lake has lots of beautiful countryside to enjoy. Our family participates in many of the activities that are offered here some of which are hockey, ice staking both at the arena and on local lakes, cross country skiing and down hill skiing and snowboaarding on lots of local hills and mini parks. In the summer mountain biking and racing in the Big Pig on Boar Mountain, always lots of fishing and water sports on several of the local lakes. We do some hiking and lots of horseback riding both competitively and trail riding, also poker rides. We usual go to the BL Fall Fair and as many of the community events as we can. This is a great place to live and we have a wonderful supportive community that I am proud to be a part of Go Braves Go!!.

Christmas 2009

Entry: We cleared a rink on Burns Lake over Christmas break. Friends and family dropped by for some fast paced pond Hockey. Good times. This was followed with a campfire and some Christmas cheer. At first my kids were adverse to the hardwork in making this happen but after the holidays they keep talking about how special these family games were.

Opportunites Galore

Entry: We live in the best kept secret in the World. Burns Lake is a Jewel. So much to do! I moved back to Burns Lake with my family 15 yrs ago. Shortly thereafter joined the local Rotary Club. Our club focuses on a healthy community. In the past 9 years we have completed a skateboard park, walking trails, tennis courts, and our most recent addition a bike skills park. Our club also participated in the New Spirit Square with the completion of the Dick Nourse Entry Way. Spirit Square is a most beautiful meeting spot on the lake with playground equipment, new fitness stations, a band shelter, and lot's of green space for your family picnics. Burns Lake offers many activites for those seeking a variety of healthy choices, come and check it out!

Great to Come Home

Entry: It was great to come home to Burns Lake over Christmas Break. All the friends I got to see again. The sledding and repairing of sleds was great. All I ever wanted to do was get out of Burns Lake - now after living in other communities and now going to school in PG - all I want to do is come back. 2 more years and I am returning home - Burns Lake is great and I can trully say you never know what you have until it is gone. I miss you Burns Lake!!

French Immersion Family Curling Funspiel

Entry: March 14/09 the Burns Lake French Immersion held a family curling funspiel. We had curlers as young as age of 4. We curled all day and had a spaghetti dinner and dessert auction in the evening. We sold out and everyone had a fabulous time. We hope to do it again this spring.

Burns Lake Children's festival

Entry: 2009 marked the first annual Burns Lake Childrens Festival, what an honour to be the chairperson for this amazing new venue held as part of the Lakes District Fall Fair Celebration. The Children's Festival features a fabulous cross-section of Early Child Development groups and organizations all volunteering to put on an activity that promotes early child development. This first annual festival served up a healthy breakfast to over 200 young participants and offered lots of free take home prizes, and professional interactive children's entertainer. Hats off to the volunteers that helped to make this event a huge success and thank you to Success By 6 and the other financial contributors for pulling it all together. What a great town we live in ... I look forward to seeing everyone back at the Festival next year to to help grow our community spirit and celebrate our Children of the Lakes District.

Not only do the Braves bring the entertainment of a great Canadian sport, they bring back the meaning of community spirit at each and every home game where the community is brought together to celebrate this great place we call home! They all love soccer and I am suprised at how many of them are so excited about the olympics it is really great that Burns Lake has this kind of things for our youth and even better to see how many kids we have that come out!

Big Pig Bike Fest - Burns Lake Mountain Biking Association

Entry: The Burns Lake Mountain Biking Association (BLMBA) is host to the BIG PIG Bike Fest each August. Fat tire fun for the whole family takes place over 3 days. Jump Jam on the Burns Lake Bike Park, 4 Cross head to head races, the "Full Boar" downhill race, and Dante's Inferno progressive cross country race are the main attractions. Local and regional bike shop venders, concession and kids fun events keeps the weekend spectator friendly and filled with action. 2010 will be see the 3rd annual Big Pig and it should be bigger and better than ever.
The BLMBA also hosts the Sprockids program, and has weekly downhill/cross-country/beginner group rides. Each week the BLMBA also holds volunteer "Workbee Wednesdays" where volunteers put some time into trail maintenence and goes for a ride. Mountain biking is a great way to stay in shape and meet a lot of friendly faces, and the BLMBA is doing its part to help Burns Lake be a healthy and fun place to live.

Snowwww

Entry: I 2006 we had an amazing snowstorm that almost crippled the community. We even had to cancel Hallowe'en! Here are a couple of photos. The most amazing part was the spirit that the community had. There were 100's of volunteers who checked up on people and helped get people out of their yards, brought them food, water, generators. The Lakes District is very caring.

Entry: Burns Lake is the Gateway to Tweedsmuir Park, one of the most pristine Provincial Parks in all of BC. It is very unique as it is only accesible by air, water, bike or horseback. No greenhouse gas emissions here ladies and gentleman! It is truly paradise!

Entry: At almost every Christmas celebration in the Village of Burns Lake and the Lakes District you will see a familiar site, a cardboard box waiting to collect food donations for those less fortunate. We use any opportunity: Braves Hockey Games, Christmas Plays, Christmas Light Ups, any opportunity for this caring community to help those who need help most!

Spirit Square 4 Seasons of Fun

Entry: Our Spirit Square gets used all year long. In the summer it is the site for music and performance, playing in the sand and the water, waterskiing, fishing, tubing. Even our guests in wheelchairs can easily navigate this faciity. Visitors love to come and see what we've done with our park!!!

Entry: Our Arts Council had done some amazing work putting on live performances at our Spirit Square. We have seen dancers of all ages "rocking out" on the pathways and some great local and national talent on our stage. Burns Lake Spirit Square has SPIRIT!!!

Not your average Bug!

Entry: Burns Lake may be known for our Pine Beetle but we've found another bug that attracts a lot of attention. Janette Derksen, horticulturist for the Village of Burns Lake has a great way of making visitors stop and take a look. We have bug, but it's a beautiful one!
