Duck tales
Date: Dec 29, 2009
Entry: With a number of creeks and riparian areas in our community, it is very common to see ducks wandering through town. Each spring, we hear at least one story of someone helping out a mother duck and her babies navigate through the traffic to get back home safely. Residents will stop traffic so someone else can shoo the ducklings across the street, burly policemen have been known to rescue duckling from storm drains, and residents have gathered orphan ducklings into a bucket for transport back to the creek. In our community, kindness isn't just for your neighbours - it's for everyone - including ducks!

BC Entertainment Hall of Fame - Kay Armstrong
Date: Dec 29, 2009
Entry: Born in Armstrong on September 22 1921, Kay Armstrong began dance classes in Vancouver with Helen Crewe followed by brief studies in the Okanagan Valley with Mary Pratton. She continued her training in Vancouver in the 1940s with the renowned teacher June Roper, who sent over seventy students to careers with various ballet companies including the Ballets Russes. Other teachers include Princess Sylvia Arfa, the daughter of the Persian ambassador to the Romanoff court and a Cecchetti diploma holder who lived in Vancouver during World War II, and Dorothy Wilson who took over Roper's B.C. School of Dancing in 1941.
In 1946 Armstrong found work in the ballet troupe of Radio City Music Hall in New York City. She returned to Vancouver in 1947 succeeding Wilson as principal of the B.C. School of Dancing. In 1948 she and her dancers were selected to perform her choreography Masquerade Ball at the 1948 Canadian Ballet Festival. Unfortunately, the Winnipeg flood of April 1948 prevented Armstrong's group from attending the festival.
In 1950, she formed Le Ballet Concert, which performed in the 1950 Canadian Ballet Festival. Her company danced Étude and Le Rêve Fantasque which were both included on New York critic Anatole Chujoy's list of favourite pieces from the festival. Her work Étude was brought into the repertoire of the recently formed National Ballet of Canada by Artistic Director Celia Franca and included in the company's 1951 debut. In fact, it was Franca who likened Armstrong to Anthony Tudor in an article published in the RAD Gazette where she wrote of Armstrong, "Like Tudor, she is interested in psychological studies and combines the classical and modern techniques ...". Étude was described by Chujoy as an abstract ballet and he noted how well trained the dancers were. Le Rêve Fantasque was a morality play about a girl who goes to the big city to seek fame and fortune. Armstrong played the lead and Chujoy described her performance as having "fine conviction" and "excellent authority". Armstrong also designed many of the costumes for her works. A piece at the 1952 Canadian Ballet Festival, for which Armstrong received critical acclaim for her dancing, was London Fantasia about a bride and groom who are killed in the WWII air raids over London and whose spirits return to envy the surviving lovers. Other choreographic works from the 1950s, such as The Legend of the Black Swan and Stanley Park Sketches, were inspired by regional themes. Armstrong also danced and choreographed for the musicals produced by Vancouver's Theatre Under the Stars in the 1950s.
Her group performed in many local productions throughout the 1950s and toured British Columbia and Alberta in 1954. Remarkable as a pedagogue and a choreographer, Armstrong was awarded the Ralph Hiltz award for choreography five times, and she received a citation for teaching in 1978 from the Dance in Canada Association. She closed her studios in 1989 but continued to teach weekly classes at a local community centre. Kay passes away in 2008

A sense of community like no other.
Date: Dec 29, 2009
Entry: Letter to the Editor – Armstrong Advertiser
December 17, 2009
Dear Editor;
As the Centre Director responsible for the Food Bank, I must share with you the true sense of community that I have seen here in Armstrong and Spallumcheen.
We have all felt the effects of the economic slow-down – people have lost their jobs, families have split, people have moved to the area in hopes of finding some sustainability for themselves and their families. This year, we will be preparing close to 140 Christmas Hampers. Translating into roughly 450 people, this means that 10% of our community is struggling with food security.
Thankfully, we are living in a community that cares about each other. We see it in the town spirit displayed at each event the Chamber hosts, in the food-sharing at the Community Gardens, and in the outpouring of support that people have shown for the Food Bank. This year, we have been overwhelmed by the generosity of community groups, businesses and individuals. People are finding creative ways of raising money and are dedicating it back into their community.
The Armstrong Inn held a dance and donated the ticket sales of $2000. CUPE local 2709 donated $700 for teens in the community. Colonial Farms donated chickens. Eagle Rock Berry Farm donated potatoes. The Realtor’s Food Drive brought in 8300 items of food. Royal Canadian Legion #35 donated $1500 from their meat draws, plus four large bins full of food in addition to organizing the Angel Tree. One local individual sponsored 15 Christmas hampers, totaling more than $2500.
But what truly shows me that our community cares, are the people who may not be in a position to donate financially but who bring in a box of cereal or 2 cans of soup. When people receive hampers at Christmas and throughout the coming year, they will know that people in our community really do “care” and with that caring, comes the gift of hope.
Thank you to everyone for your support.

Commemorative Tree Program
Date: Dec 29, 2009
Entry: In 1998, the Council of the day conceived the notion of a Commemorative Tree Program. Council's first concern was Otter Lake Road as it had been identified that many of the beautiful historical White Ash trees that arched the street were in need of immediate attention and eight would need to be removed. Council decided to replace the trees with 20', 4" diameter White Ash trees that would eventually be big enough to replace older trees. They further planned to ultimately have them silvicultured at our Sewage Treatment Reservoir on five acres the City has allowed Riverside Forest Products Ltd. in conjunction with local schools, to use for a Community Resource Project as a learning opportunity for students. Council developed the program with the idea that people may appreciate an opportunity to plant a tree in memory of someone special, and have a plaque placed on a cairn that has since been located along Otter Lake Road. At the same time, this would help to maintain the picturesque beauty of Otter Lake Road. Everyone is welcome to participate in this living legacy program, and the city will maintain the trees and cairn to commemorate someone special.

Last week the organization, mandated to enhance health care in the community, donated $45000 to the Haugen Comunity Healthcare Society's campaign to purchase their building outright. Star of wonder, star of night
Date: Dec 29, 2009
Entry: There’s something shining bright above field and forest on the northwest edge of Spallumcheen. It guides a group of drunken ruffians, three whirling dervishes, two bored shepherds, and an angel in a pine tree.
And that’s just part of The Story that is currently unfolding at Caravan Farm Theatre. The farm’s majestic Clydesdales and Norwegian fjords have been hard at work pulling groups of revelers on sleighs. Playwright Martha Ross has written a nativity story that will make your eyes light up –– with joy, laughter, and wonder. It’s a story as old as modern time, and yet, no matter what your background or belief system is, there really is something magical about seeing it come to life. And it’s a star we follow, through incredible scenery, including King Herod’s court, and eventually to a manger, and a Kodak moment that includes real, live donkeys. Directed by former Caravan co-artistic director Jennifer Brewin, a cast of four incredible actors, Lindsey Angell, Darren Dolynski, David Beazely and Dawn Petten, are the superheroes of the night. They run through frozen forest to get into the various characters from scene to scene –– and they do it with barely a breath out of place. And what a bunch of characters they play - There’s the dizzying Three Kings, who whirl and delight, the preening King Herod with his icicle dreads and just as cold heart, the punch-drunk ruffians, the philosophizing shepherd and his companion. Oh, and then there’s this angel named Gabriel who floats in from time to time blowing his horn so incessantly off key, it isn’t blasphemy that we laugh wholeheartedly along. The Story really is one that will bring warmth to your soul. With the seasonal choral arrangements sung by local musician Jude Lee, who follows the sleds, filling the night air with her hauntingly beautiful voice, while playing mandolin and drum, it really is a magical night. And magical is the best way to describe The Story. Keep shining O star of wonder.
