Barn Dance

Who needs a court?

Entry: Keeping active doesn't need to involve expensive equipment or just the reight venue - take a cue from kids and you will see you can stay active no matter where you are. Take this game of pick up basketball - a couple of kids, some aunts and uncles, a nice day in March, a hoop and a smooth driveway was all that was needed for a fun, active afternoon.

Whitewater Rafting

Entry: ,One of the activities some of our more adventurous residents enjoy is whitewater rafting. Although you can't 'shoot the rapids' right in our community, our grad class, youth groups, families and individuals have several options to enjoy this sport. We tried Interior Whitewater Expeditions in July - and we are ready to do it again this year! The cool water, the rapids, the scenery - plus the workout all made for a great activity.

Entry: Spirit Square in Downtown Armstrong is the place where many outdoor events happen...and this was a first... One cold December day a young couple thought an outdoor wedding would be cool...all bundled in white fur the bride arrived fashionably late to a nearly frozen groom and minister...not realzing how quickly the sun would set nor how cold it would really be the minister had to improvise and get to the "Do you's?" faster than originally planned...it was so cold that the ink froze in the pen needed to sign the marriage licence...lol who could have planned for such things in advance...later at dinner those tiny details were completed and rumor has it that the bride and groom had no problem heating things up later...

Hittin a Home Run...

Entry: Twas a beautiful June day when a group of Baseball players gathered at home plate for the most unique wedding this town has ever seen. Two Slow Pitch players decided to tie the knot at home plate, the Minister dressed as an Umpire did what was required and helped this couple hit a home run second to none.
The Wedding cake was decorated with candied baseballs, the bride wore a black ballcap with a veil attached...the groom was in the colors of his team and the guests were in their respective uniforms...each guest received a baseball autographed by the bride and groom...a day to be remembered for a very long where? None other than Armstrong BC...If you can dream it we can do it!

House to House Blessings and Prayer

Entry: At 9am January 1, 2010 a group of people from Glad Tidings Church will embark on their 3rd annual "Let us pray for your home and family" event. People have to sign up for this, 26 homes are on the list this year, we'll arrive at the front door and follow the example in the Old Testament of anointing the door posts of the house with a small dab of oil, and then we will pray that God will bless the home, family and all who may come and go through this door throughout the year. We usually don't go inside, nevertheless there are those who prepare for our arrival and will offer us cups of hot chocolate or coffee and maybe a cookie or two after we have prayed for them. This time of blessings and prayers has become an high-light for many in our community. If you want to be on the list for next year just call Glad Tidings Church.

It just won't quit

Entry: Christmas might be over for another year...but the giving just won't quit...just today someone dropped by my office to drop of something that a particular someone had need of. There are days when it begins to rain washers and dryers...I always chuckle wondering why now...but give it a few days and the call comes asking...Do you have a washer to give away? What a thrill to say YES INDEED I DO!

Walking in a winter wonderland

Entry: While you can walk to stay active anytime during the year, it is very common to see people out and about right after a snowfall. The blue sky, crisp air, and clean sidewalks courtesy of our efficient Public Works crew provide encouragement to get outside, get active and enjoy the fresh air.

Saturday Morning

Entry: Although Armstrong is a vibrant and active community throughout the year, but one of my favorite times is a Saturday morning from April - October, while the farmers' market is on. The day starts with breakfast at the Brown Derby Cafe where your only choice is how you want your eggs, bacon or sausage or ham, and white, brown or flax toast. If you are lucky, you will get a table right away, and you might have to join someone at there table. You are never alone at the Brown Derby! After breakfast, a trip to the farmers' market is a must, and then there are usually lots of choices after that. Maybe an opening of a new art show at the gallery, a miniature horse show at the mutliplex, garage sales, antique & collectible displays, youth soccer, a hike up Rose Swanson or grab a coffee and head to Memorial Park and watch the kids on the playground or in the pool. Before you know it, it's time to head home to make lunch. Now what will I make with the fresh berries......?

Entry: Although we have lived in Armstrong for 11 years now, I am still amazed by the support the community shows for events. Whether it is Canada Day, lacrosse, a bake sale, Remembrance Day ceremonies - any activity the community is invited to - they come out to. It can be raining, cold or scorching hot - and they still come. Thank you Armstrong for supporting the many activities and events - because of you, it makes all the planning and work worthwhile!

The Spirit of Giving

Entry: Everywhere I went someone was wanting to give me something to give away to someone in need. My job puts me in contact with a large number of people who find themselves in need of physical things...this community is amazing when it comes to helping the less fortunate...one particular business brought 5 boxes of NEW clothes to give away...it was so much fun bringing people into my office and telling them they could have whatever they chose from the boxes...The joy of getting something new is amazing.
This Christmas Armstrong hosted the largest Community Christmas Banquet ever. 300 sit down guests...10 days before the planned event the only thing we had was a guarantee of a mess of sweets. Within a few days 28 turkeys were donated, 100lbs of potatoes, 100lbs of sweet potatoe and all the other fixings for a 8 course first class dinner...not only that but there were enough presents to give away to those who needed toothpaste, soaps, shampoos etc... this community is amazing!

Never a Dull Saturday

The best part is the mixing and mingling that happends between friend old and new. No need to be bored in Armstrong on a Saturday...

Armstrong Elementary School - a piece of our history

Entry: Armstrong Elementary School was initially known as the “Armstrong Spallumcheen Consolidated School”. When it was built in 1921, it was the first school in the Province to be constructed as a central school into which were consolidated approximately thirteen small country or one-room schools. In 1946, Armstrong-Spallumcheen School District No. 21 was formed. Armstrong Elementary continued to be the only elementary school in the District until the construction of Len Wood Elementary School in 1964. At that time A.E.S. became the primary school while Len Wood became the intermediate school. In 1990, it was decided to establish three full elementary schools and the school boundaries were redrawn. From 1994 to 1996, A.E.S. was renovated extensively and made wheelchair accessible. In 1996, School District No. 21 was amalgamated with School District No. 89 to the north to form North Okanagan Shuswap School District No. 83 with its central office in Salmon Arm. Armstrong Elementary School fills a special place in the City of Armstrong. Numerous present students have parents and grandparents who were students here. There are many community people who have a strong attachment to the school. This is evident from the numbers of people who attend the school at such times as Christmas concerts and Spring Festival. It is also a school which is often used in the evenings and on weekends by community groups such as the Scouts and sports groups for badminton, floor hockey and karate.

Gleaning = Community

Entry: In our community, there is no need for anyone to go hungry. In addition to the food banks, there are opportunities for gleaning at several local commercial gardens. When a crop is almost finished and is open to gleaners, an email is sent out to members of the local food initiative and their partners, who contact those who may be in need of fruits and vegetables. The program, although loosely organized, does work. Further fruits and vegetables are available at the community garden throughout the growing season.

Active Seniors

Entry: Seniors in Armstrong are encouraged to be an active and involved part of our community. There are very few organizations that do not have seniors volunteering, and many that would not be able to function if it were not for the volunteers. Seniors offer our community a wide range of expertise and skills - and we welcome them as an important part of the community.

A Walk to Remember

Entry: Although we have limited beaches and lakes for watersports, that doesn't stop us from enjoying those activities. One of the favorite pasttimes of our friends and family is to head to the Shuswap River, about 15 minutes away, and enjoy a leisurely float down the river. Nothing better than a float on a hot Okanagan day!

Fire Safety at Armstrong Elementary School

Entry: On October 6th, members of the Armstrong Fire Department visited AES and spoke to our primary classes. Their talk was about fire safety and how to get out of your home if there was a fire. They reminded everyone to check their smoke detectors to make sure they are on and working. They asked all students to take home a fire safety booklet. In it there are ideas for a home escape plan, how to prevent and escape from a fire in your home and it has a Home Safety Checklist. Students can enter a draw to go out for lunch with the firemen in the fire truck. Form must be in by Thursday, October 9th. The winner of the draw will go out for lunch on Friday, October 10th at 11:30. Good luck everyone and take care to prevent fire hazards!

Me to We Day 2009 at Len Wood Middle School

Entry: Our school district is proud to be involved in what promises to be an unbelievable day later this month. We Day is a one-of-a-kind event featuring inspirational and motivational speeches and performances from leading activists, speakers and entertainers. It is an annual celebration of the power of young people to change the world. It’s also the kick-off to youth-led world-changing actions. We have completed our selection process and are glad to report that we will be sending 36 students to this event on Tuesday, September 29th. Following the event, these students will be involved with some school and district social responsibility work, including but not limited to the upcoming “Toonie Tuesday” event in October.
We have some rather exciting news to share about a project we are participating in this year. Our school was one of seven selected from the province to join the British Columbia Universal Design of Learning (BC UDL) Project. The project is now in its third year so we are one of twenty-one schools involved in BC. I characterized this in our June newsletter as a project that has the potential to truly enhance our level of student engagement and increase student achievement for all students. The provincial coordinator for this program will be coming to our school in October to train our team. Our UDL team will be collaborating throughout the year with each other, with other teams from around the province, and with educators from around the world who are involved with this work. From time to time through the year, we will be bringing in teachers on call to release our team to facilitate this type of collaboration. This truly is an exciting project to bring to our school. We anticipate that this project will start slowly but we are scheduled to be full-speed ahead by January.

Len Wood Middle School Fruit and Vegetable Nutritional Program

Entry: We are happy to report that LWMS will have fresh fruit and vegetables arriving next week as part of the ActNow BC provincial government initiative – an initiative designed to improve the health of BC’s children and families. The BCSFVN Program is funded by the BC Ministry of Education, the BC Ministry of Healthy Living and Sport, as well as the BC Ministry of Agriculture and Lands. The BC Agriculture in the Classroom Foundation administers the program to 936 schools around the province. Product is distributed to our school in partnership with Overwaitea Food Group and selected carriers. By now you should have all received brochures outlining the goals of the program. We have also sent home “reverse consent” forms giving you a chance to opt out should you have any special health considerations. Our first delivery will be blueberries! Information is provided to teachers and students with each delivery with an aim to learn more about the health benefits of the food product in focus.
