How I will be supporting the Games
Date: Jan 4, 2010
Entry: Edna Luxton is a long-time volunteer in the community so of course, it made sense she would be one of the first ones to show up to the scarve cutting workbee yesterday. This busy lady is one of Armstrong's Citizen of the Year, is involved with the Interior Provincial Exhibition, the Museum & Art Gallery, 4H, and many other organizationa. On January 26th, when the 2010 Torch Run is in Armstrong, Edna will be sharing her usual Tuesday Tea with a group of seniors - and we know they will all be cheering our torch bearers on - with Edna's voice loud and clear!! Thanks Edna for all you do for the community - it does not go unnoticed!

Toy Lending Library
Date: Jan 4, 2010
Entry: The Child Care Resource and Referral Toy Lending Library catalogue looks like every child’s wish list with Lego, puzzles, rocking horses, work benches, books and videos, almost more than anyone can imagine.
The Toy Lending Library is a wish that can come true. Parents can join to sign out toys and equipment for children ages birth to five years. The toys come in themed kits with suggestions on how to use them for fun and learning. There are also larger items like toy cars, strollers, tricycles, wagons, play pens and baby gates. Parents love this and it’s great for anyone who has children visiting, for care providers and for play dates and birthday parties. These are good quality toys that are well-maintained and people respect them and take good care of them. The Child Care Resource and Referral office provides a variety of services for families and child care providers, including workshops and assistance with completing child care subsidy forms. Membership in the library is $20 per year. Registration is at Child Care Resource and Referral at the Boys and Girls Club.

Knights get by Golden
Date: Jan 4, 2010
Entry: The North Okanagan Knights went through the Kootenays with a skeleton lineup, but showed plenty of guts and heart, stunning the Golden Rockets 4-3 Sunday afternoon. The Knights, who bowed 5-2 to the Kimberley Dynamiters despite outshooting the Nitros 44-15 Saturday night, hit the holiday break at 6-28-0-2. “We should have won two games, but we’ll take the one win,” said Knights’ head coach Dave Dupas. “We outshot and outplayed Golden and we did the same against Kimberley for the most part, but we just couldn’t find the back of the net and it wasn’t for a lack of trying. “We’re outshooting teams by a wide margin and the goals have to start coming for us.” The Knights moved to within two points of their expansion cousin Penticton Lakers for the sixth and final playoff spot in the Okanagan/Shuswap Conference. The Knights entertain the Sicamous Eagles Friday, Jan. 10.

Ice Racing
Date: Jan 4, 2010
Entry: With a cold snap just before Christmas, the smaller local lakes froze and found themselves hosts not only to skaters, hockey players and ice fishermen, but ice racers as well. Several local motorcyclists could be found riding around a make-shift track on Swan Lake, drifting around the corners and relying on the heavily ice-lugged tires to keep their bikes pointed in the right direction.

New chief named for department
Date: Jan 4, 2010
Entry: Having served with his predecessor for 12 years, new Armstrong-Spallumcheen Fire Department chief Ian Cummings isn’t planning many changes. Cummings, a computer business owner who has been with the department for 16 years, including the last 12 as a captain, takes over from Rob Brown, who decided to retire. For Brown, who started with the department as a volunteer in 1980 and worked his way up to chief in 1988, the time was right to step down. Congratulations Chief Cummings!

Business rallies around youth
Date: Jan 4, 2010
Entry: Boys and Girls Club members in Armstrong will be on the road again thanks to the gift of new wheels. A van was stolen from the club in early August and used in an attempted robbery before being torched by the thieves. After reading about the crime in The Morning Star, Vernon Fix Auto Collision (Star Autobody) manager Cam Srigley rang up one of his colleagues and they chose to help out. “Cam gave me a phone call and said, ‘Do you want to do something?’” said Mike Mason, of Manfred’s Autobody. They decided they did. They found the van, a 1994 Dodge Ram, in an online classified ad and bought it. It was formerly a vehicle for King’s Christian School in Salmon Arm. “It worked out good for everybody, especially the Boys and Girls Club,” said Srigley. Mason believes what the club offers is a benefit to kids everywhere and, as an auto body expert, he certainly sympathized with the theft of the original van. “We see so many cars stolen that we need to fix and (the Boys and Girls clubs) do such a great job. That’s why we wanted to get involved.” Having a second van will enable the club to introduce kids to more experiences because they’ll be able to take field trips without relying on vehicles from other clubs. “We’d been borrowing from other Boys and Girls clubs in the Central Okanagan,” said director Jack Whelpley. “This allows us to take recreational and after-school kids on field trips so they’re not indoors all the time.” He says he was happily surprised when he heard Srigley and Mason had stepped forward and delivered a new van. “I was absolutely astounded. I thought, ‘How fantastic it is that someone in the community would come forward and do this.’” The children who will benefit from the vehicle weren’t yet aware it had been given to the club when Whelpley accepted the van from Srigley and Mason. Whelpley’s colleague Andrea Schnell predicted they would be pumped up to find out the news. “They’ll be extremely excited. A safe vehicle is incredible for these kids,” she said.
