Have you ever seen a pumpkin fly?
Date: Mar 10, 2009
Entry: It is not typical to see pumpkins flying hundreds of feet into the air. Such was the case, however, in the 8th Annual Great Pumpkin Launch on Saturday October 25th 2008.
Organized by the Armstrong Spallumcheen Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with community organizations, the event featured lots of free active family activities, including the Great Pumpkin Launch, Lawn Tractor Racing and the Pumpkin Relay.
As part of the community driven 'Active Community, Safe Community' program, funded in part by the Mounted Police Foundation, RCMP members and students from the local Dare program planned and built a catapult. After a few test runs and some fine tuning, the RCMP Youth Catapult was ready to roll and at the annual launch, managed to place 1st in the Youth Team Category.
“We hoped to provide some positive mentoring to students, while encouraging active interaction with local youth on a different level,” said Cst., Armstrong Detachment. 'For some students, it was their first time working as a team with adults.'
Turnout for the event was great, and the RCMP Youth Catapult team was joined by the Catapult Kings Jong Garden (8 time Champion), Pleasant Valley Secondary School, the Junction Cafe, homeschool students and the Armstrong Spallumcheen Fire Department.
“We wanted to give students the opportunity to interact on a positive level with the RCMP and we also wanted to make this a fun event for them to come to,” said event chair. “We hope that these teams will participate in 2009 – we hear the Fire Department is already working on their entry!
