Go for the Gold - Celebrate Canada Day!
Date: Aug 6, 2009
Entry: Memorial Park in Armstrong was the scene of one of Canada’s many Birthday celebrations this year. The celebration began with a pancake breakfast, followed by the opening ceremony featuring greetings from local and regional dignitaries, presentation of the Color Party, and the announcement of the 2009 Good Citizen of the Year. Festivities began at 11:00 and ran until late afternoon and include a special birthday cake donated by Valley First Financial Services. There were lots of great food, games, Bounce ‘n’ Play, contests, bannock, face-painting, a petting zoo, and entertainment including local band ‘The Goods’. The day also included a free swim sponsored by Armstrong Spallumcheen Parks and Recreation. It was fun for all – and it was free for all thanks to community sponsors. In tribute to the 2010 Olympic Games being hosted by Vancouver/Whistler, prizes for the day included 'medals' and the theme featured our version of summer games - sumo wrestling, jousting, bungee run, relays, wet beaver toss, bigfoot race, cow milking, salmon toss and more. And no animals were harmed in the fun!

Hospital Auxiliary Extraordinaire!
Date: May 7, 2009
Entry: The funds raised from the Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store (affectionately known as the Bargin Bin) are legendary. From used clothing to books to rags, all cleaned and sorted for over 2 decades, this volunteer group has earned thousands and thousands of dollars and given most of it away to local health concerns. When you think of this small dedicated group, the amount donated is staggering - checks for tens of thousands of dollars are regularly donated to the Vernon Jubilee Hospital and its many projects, the Lions Eye Centre in Armstrong and many many more - fulfilling the mandate of Hospital Auxiliaries across BC. And the amazing part? Our community does not have a hospital anymore! Even with the closure of our local hospital years ago, this dedicated group continues to contribute to the healthcare needs of our community. They recently celebrated their 20th anniversary - in a building they own after saving money to purchase it. Congratulations Ladies on your community spirit and your dedication!!!

Trails Around Town!
Date: May 7, 2009
Entry: The trail system in the City of Armstrong is a network combining on-road and off-road components. The off-road trails have been slowly aquired as land has come up for development, as easements have been claimed and as land owners have generously given permission for a crossing. A new brochure 'Trails Around Town' has been developed through a partnership with the City of Armstrong and the Armstrong Spallumcheen Active Communities Trail Committee. The brochure outlines existing trails, makes route suggestions, and gives distances. Some of these trails parallel creeks and allow us to see BC wildlife - muskrats, beavers, turtles, various birds and more have been seen by residents and visitors alike. Walkers are asked to help protect these sensitive ecosystems by picking up any garbage and maintaining a safe distance from wildlife. This brochure shows our committment to living a healthyly lifestyle accessible to all - way to go Armstrong!!!
